fd vs. supra

Got a chance to race an fd last night..... well sort of race. I was turning out onto a main road when a black fd with a large exhaust went by. So I chased after him got next to him at a red light right as it was turning green. So we both took off normally he went out a little bit faster and his buddy was looking out the window ( I'm guessing looking for my front mount ). So we end up slowing down to probably 30 or so and I point forward and nod and he punches it gets the jump because I let him go first. I run out second and we are even go to hit third and miss it. We were coming up on traffic so we both u-turn. This time it's a much slower roll 15-20 and I'm actually in first. I let him go first again. I time it a little better this time so we stay pretty even on this one. I hit second and loose some traction pulling slightly, hit third and he either let off or missed a gear. I was really waiting for third because that's when I would have started walking away. Don't really know what happened I drove off and he has slowed back down to the speed limit. I'm guessing he just wasn't wanting to go 70mph+ because we were in a 45mph even though there weren't any other cars on the road. I'd really like to get in a highway run with a third gen sometime soon. My clutch is slipping pretty bad now. I'm about to upgrade and I've got a t-78 that is supposed to be here on monday. Right now I'm just BPU. Intake, full 3 inch exhaust from the dp, boost controller running 18psi, cam gears, and the front mount. Last time I dyno'd it put down 425rwhp with the clutch slipping up top and me loosing out on some power. I'm guessing the fd was probably just intake and exhaust

I had a buddy that made 431 rwhp w/ all bolt-ons @ 20 psi ish and walked him pretty good from 30 to 140 ( 4 cars). So i am guessing the car you raced probably was running 12-13 psi on the stockers. G

1QWIK7 05-19-07 03:33 PM

You have a nice setup of cars man :)

I wish i never got rid of the IS. I think i might get back into one lol

RX7withNitrous 05-19-07 04:32 PM

Well I figured I would beat him unless he had a single but I couldn't hear it. I was just bummed he wouldn't go into a higher gear because third gear is where the supra really starts to pull. Supras are alot better over 60. But sometimes racing from a slow roll like that is fun.

The is300 is bone stock it's just the daily but I like it pretty comfortable ride and has enough power to not be a totally boring. I do mich the loud ass rotary exhaust. When the guy I was racing last changed gears it shot out some fire out of the exhaust and I miss that about the 7.

You mean your buddy had a supra right? Are you saying he beat you by 4 lengths?

Yeah mine was too but almost everyday i was looking online to make it faster lol. I wanted it to stay stock but its just soo easy to make fast. I didnt want to end up with 2 modified cars. So i had to get rid of it before i went crazy.

But i think now if i get one again ill keep it stock. Maybe a small drop and some tints. The car has some low end balls to make it less boring as you said. Plus it has more room than my daily now. I hate not being able to drive my friends when i hang out.

NO.. I beat him by 4 lengths in his Supra. Total of 3 races. All highway runs. He said it put down 431 to the ground. I am putting down 372 in the stock twins. ( I think its a bit more when actually on the street w/ good air moving through the front mount.) I have stayed even or beat slighty every single RX7 making up to a claimed 400 rwhp (total of 5 ) . I have got spanked by a t78 FD.

I would say it's possible if your number was a little low or you dyno'd on a hot day. You coule be closer to 380-400. The weight is the biggest thing. The supra is just so much heavier what's the weight on the fd. It's got to be at least a few hundred pounds different. Maybe you should dyno your car again or something. That must be a low number if you are beating 7's with 400rwhp. Certain dyno's put out alot lower numbers there are a few different types. What type of dyno was it?

his turbos are spooling quicker. i beat a single that made a touch more rwhp then me.

Mr rx-7 tt 05-21-07 11:03 AM

I'll bet he had more than just a intake and a dp if he could run that well against the Supra. Like the other guy said he was probably running 12-13 psi.

Exactly.. I get out in front and stay there not gaining much if at all. My original dyno tune was very hot ( july in Orlando)/ 17th pass made 364. A year later a bit cooler and put down 373. Many factors paly in the inches game. Too many to list ( weight, flywheel in moving pulls, a good ported motor for the few extra pony making high rpms, etc.) I believe weight against the supra. The guy also had a large girl in pass. seat as well. I gotta post the vid.. My buddy got some great footage in a built stang trailing. This was 3 years ago. G

running 18 psi on that supra, gee.. =/ no wonder ur clutch is slipping, and u plan on running more boost, lol.. hope u have money for a rebuild soon, b/c if ur clutch cant handle 18 psi, idk wut ur gonna do when u try to +psi. lol.. might wanna let off the hp for a while.. and just be thankful u have a nice car.

paradoxbox 05-21-07 10:58 PM

Has anyone here experimented with water sprayers on their FD's FMIC for a bit of free HP on hot runs? It might make up for days when it's so hot your FMIC is having a hard time keeping up.

Supras are a whole different ballgame. Stock turbos stop being efficient at 18psi. But some guys run 20psi on the stock turbos they just wear out alot quicker. I honestly have never heard of anyone blowing their motor with the stock twins I don't even know if it's possible. The turbos would shit way before the motor would. There are a few guys over on supraforums putting down close to 500rwhp on the stock twins with nitrous. My clutch has been in the car for a while plus it's a oem they just really aren't made to handle 400rwhp+. T78 came in yesterday though so shits about to get real quick.

Sounds like a fun race. I only raced one Supra when I had my FD, I know it was on stock twins but not sure ho wmuch boost he was running. At the time I was ~300RWHP in my FD. Raced him many times from slower rolls, every outcome was about the same, I would get a jump, stay ahead or very close until ~120 or so, when he would just start walking on me.

ya I was just hoping to get over 60 or 70 because that's when they really start to pull hard. First and second gear just aren't fun

Yup.. I go through a set of turbos about every 10000 miles. Of course the prevoius 2 I replaced were good used ones for $200 a piece. They just begin to smoke on decel more and more bit by bit. It wouldnt be practical if I D/D the car. I will go single eventually. Focused on too much other stuff right now.

mdpalmer 05-22-07 06:09 PM

should be in the FAQ

^^^ that's very interesting to note. This data point should be put into the FAQs for FDs, based on the number of people who ask how much boost stockers can handle.

The turbos still made great power. Just dont like the little bit smoke every now and then.

did u see smoke only on decel or other times too?

i only ask cause i am seeign smoke now on decel after about 35k miles of using 15psi. i thoguht it wwas my pcv.

Maty.. I mainly see it when I pull the car out of gear.. Say at at stoplight. I see a small puff of smoke. Probably happens more than I notice. Its not much at all really. I changed 2 sets of turbos 2 x now and the smoke is gone after hence the oil seal in the rear turbo is begginning to fail. G

The physics are solid, it should work,... but in reality I never saw much of a drop in my intake temp on my PFC. Now, I dont know how fast the temp sensor can respond (maybe the actual change was greater then the readout?) but I was disappointed. Very slow change, on the read out. This was on a large SMIC with good ducting.

PS good race :coolkid01
