FD vs. M-B SL500 AMG

I decided that, because it was the day before Turkey Day and traffic would be light for my commute into work, I would drive the FD today. While en route, some guy in a Mercedes Benz SL500 AMG (not sure the year, but the latest raked body) was weaving in and out of traffic, riding everybodies' bumpers looking for an opening to leave everyone. Despite his efforts, he still ended up getting stuck at the upcoming traffic light. I had pretty much let this idiot go thinking he was being a tool. Well, when he got caught at the light, I ended up right behind him. I was almost certain on the green he was going to go for it, so I thought , if he does, I would run it. But then I guess reason prevailed (or he realized I was in an FD and he might just get embarrassed in his kagillion dollar sports), as he left the light like granny just took the controls. Even the Nissan Sentra in the lane next to him made better time off the line.

I think the word is out on us guys! Nice to see the rep carries some weight.

Seriously, do you think I had a chance, nevertheless? I'm not sure what the latest SL500 AMG is rated at.

My mods: DP, 99 J-spec turbos, RB catback exhaust, modified airbox intake, Greddy SMIC, Greddy E-01 boost controller @ 10 psi, Tokicio shocks.

This guy appears to have been a poser. The badging for the AMG massaged SLs are SL55 AMG and SL65 AMG. The 55 gets a supercharged V-8 w/ 493 hp and the 65 is a twin turbocharged V-12 w/ 605 hp. Maybe he had an AMG installed sound system?!

IRPerformance 11-23-05 03:14 PM

If it was the real thing you'd probably lose. They run about even with a vette. You need to turn up that boost!

jd to rescue 11-23-05 03:31 PM

Well, according to Road & Track, the SL 500 does a 0-60 in 6.1 so that would not have been a contest. The SL55 AMG, on the otherhand, does a 0-60 in 4.5. On a good day, I might (emphasize might) have stayed with him.

To support higher boost, I would probably need to flow more fuel. Just the same, I really am not looking for more power or performance. I have done the reliability mods and that is plenty enough for me.

By the way, Elisha is my favorite Girl Next Door too!

Meiogirl 11-23-05 03:38 PM

i raced a real cl55 AMG rolling at about 80, he took off before i could grab 3rd. i think your guy is a fakie or a lightfoot ;)

At 80 mph, you are in the wheelhouse of the Benz. Those things are designed to cruise at 160 on the Autobahn. So at 80 he probably had all 500+ foot pounds of torque at his disposal.

Meiogirl 11-23-05 05:59 PM

^^^ im sure. he rolled up and paced me. all i saw was big heavy sedan so i went for it and quickly saw the rear of his car and the badging. hehe

Torque pWnZ j00!!!!!... j/k.

zinx 11-23-05 06:22 PM

Go single, then they don't have a chance.

darkphantom 11-23-05 07:26 PM

unless your single you wont stand a chance. my bro Luis running 15psi on the stock twins got murdered. there slow as hell but wait till they get a chance to get up to speed. the speedometer wont stop moving. This is comming from a death race experience BTW the SL65amg's torque is around the 700mark

the non amg's like the SL500/SL600 are garbage. only pushing around 300hp

ajsuper7 11-23-05 09:38 PM

lol i got murdered coming home tonight from work in my 91 vert by a 04+ E55, it's not even funny how bad...i just tached out 1st and just cruised cuz he was flat GONE. wouldnt mind having an amg car as a daily driver and my stock automatic vert as a weekend car.

Err, no. An SL600 is an 11.9 sec quarter mile car. They are VERY quick (twin turbo V-12). You might be thinking of the SL65 AMG, which is yet a bit faster than the SL600.

my friend has an 06 E 55 AMG. he literally killed a 300C SRT-8, and my friend had 4 300+LBS people in with him. those things haul. real goood

ajsuper7 11-25-05 08:10 PM

god your telling me, it makes a noise like a beast from Doom(video game, not the crappy movie) and takes off. im wondering what those things will run with some drag slicks and a few minor bolt on mods (intake, catback, ecu). no doubt there is plenty of left over power.

I ran one of the *new* SL500's in my TII. It was a middle-aged man with sunglasses on, top down and fresh dealership tags.

I got him to punch it at around 80 or so. Needless to say, he walked me at first and actually WAVED at me as he was pulling away, but then after he was about 3 cars ahead he stopped pulling. He actually looked over his shoulder once to make sure. I think he thought it would've been a blow-out. :)

We went to about 115mph before he shut-down. Even though I got beaten, I didn't feel too bad because I could tell I had suprised the owner of the $100k Mercedes.

This is with the stock turbo with intake/exhaust etc. running 12psi.

I also raced a slightly modd'd Camaro Z28 that day and it was dead even through all of 4th gear. 80-125mph  Then again, I don't ascribe much value to V8's. I wanted to > him.

adam c 11-28-05 09:49 PM

Not even a race. Why bother to post?

Why did I bother to post????????????? :D

ok, time for some education for you... the SL500's power and torque may not seem impressive but it is more than adaquate. the SL600 garbage, HA! if 493 hp 590 lb-ft avilable from 1,800 - 3,500 rpm is garbage, i would really like to know what you have been smoking... Oh wait, Maybe you don't realize that M-B are very capable engine builders, and even if they wern't, it doesn't take a genious to pull adaquate power out of a twin turbo 5.5L V-12... So, if 493 hp, and 590 lb-ft of torque avilable from 1,800 to 3,500 rpm is garbage, what do you consider acceptable?

nvm...

Open Mouth, Insert Mouth. Thank you, Come again!

you really should consider that sometimes people may know what they are talking about, however considering a lot of what i see on this board i almost see where your comming from. also maybe you didn't realize your talking to someone who has driven just about everything you'd want to and a lot you wouldn't between a 3 speed automatiac 3 cyl geo metro. on up to M-B CL55 and SL55 AMG, Dodge Viper GTS ACR, Corvette Z-06, Ford GT(no, not the mustang), Lotus Esprit S4, Jaguar XKR, i really could go on, but i think, and hope you get the point...

BuujinBejiita 12-04-05 04:53 PM

Torque (SAE net): 738 lb-ft @ 2000 rpm <-- thats retarded, whats the redline on those like 6000? thats got a lower torque band then big blocks.

No, its its not retarded. Its fact. The SL65 develops 738 ft lbs from 2,000 - 4,000 rpm (it then slightly trails off). AMGs are extremely fast cars. The AMG 65 series is the top model & it has serious power & torque. They can be modified/chipped for even more power & torque. They tend to weigh quite a bit, but they have big power to move the heft.

With so much power, a lower redline wouldn't matter.
