Great write ups and pictures Mike and Dave - much appreciated
With the motorsport season finally waking up out of a New England winter hibernation and with my first event less than a month out, I inevitably had to get around to replacing my expired M2005 HJC CL-14 motorcycle helmet with a SA2015 motorsport helmet. It should be good through 2026, so I went with a helmet that I can grow with as I'm looking to get into endurance racing over the next few years. I went with a Stilo ST5 GT Composite helmet (Snell SA2015/FIA 8858-2010 certified, hydration system, integrated electronic system) https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1710/...8f7c957f_k.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1542/...2d0a5cdd_k.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1464/...c5cd5857_k.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1579/...f77f7200_k.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1476/...ad2fc59e_k.jpg The helmet is noticeably significantly lighter than my last helmet with better visibility, and is slightly narrower and shorter. A pretty good set up for a 6'0" driver in a sunroofed Touring FD in a Sparco Evo on the lowest bracket option mounted on a low seat rail with the seat pads removed for extra clearance https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1605/...b780c534_k.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1650/...a261774b_k.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1697/...45a77b67_k.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1616/...e24c479f_k.jpg I also finally got around to picking up a HANS device, which is a much better late than never purchase https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1541/...0d45ff5f_k.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1581/...73f31be4_k.jpg Best of luck for a fun and safe motorsport season Cheers! |

Envious of the Stilo for sure. My brother just got one and it's sweet. I also would really like the integrated headseat/earmuffs as I'm an instructor and pulling the earpiece in and out of the helmet can get old and also wear out the helmet. Not sure I'm ready to take the plunge on the price though..haha. I was hoping the Roux helmets coming out would be a more price friendly option, but it doesn't seem like there's significant reason to go there yet.

Not a problem Johnny :icon_tup: Do you and your wife have any track days planned for the year?
Smokey - Yea, there are some great helmet options out there which makes what I thought would have been an easy replacement a difficult decision Does anyone have any recommendations for a good compact helmet and HANS bag? |
That Stilo is Pure Storm trooper. That's for when I grow up one day like Rick.

Totally Storm Trooper! Its a little tempting to paint it white - I may not be fully grown up yet
Are you free in a few weeks? Up for heading to NJMP for The Devil in the Dark? |

There are some great options at much better price points than this helmet - I splurged since its one of the better endurance helmet options on the market today. I wouldn't have gone this crazy if it was a helmet just for HPDEs or time trials. I'd recommend bringing your FD to a good motorsport shop that carries a wide variety of helmets and seeing which one fits, but you'll be good if you go with the Stilo. You'll find the price is the same from vendor to vendor. I bought the helmet from Winding Road Racing out of Texas and the accessories from HMS Motorsport in Massachusetts (they're the Stilo distributor in the US, so they can definitely get you what you need quickly) Glad to hear you have a few track days scheduled. I am sure you have already done it, but make sure you have a good amount of brake pad left and bleed the system. There are few things quite as scary as losing brake feel at a track day - fortunately for me the one time I had it was approaching a tight braking zone entry at NHMS and not looking for a hard brake coming down from speed (like coming down the front straight approaching the banked oval... that would have ended terribly!). I pulled off the track immediately and bled the brakes mid session. Lesson learned the easy way! Best of luck with your track days. Shoot me a message if you have any other questions on getting squared away for it. I'd love to see some pictures or video from your day if you get any Cheers! |
