Congratulations Andrew McKee!!!
For finishing second in his 93 FD at the SCCA Solo National Championships in SM2 class!! It’s good to see an Rx kick a little but Z06 butt every now and then.

Way to go Andy! FD is a killer chassis that is for sure.
Didn't he have the lowest time of the day in that class? Don't understand why he is 2nd. 1st run he must've spun or something!?!?! |
Congrats Andy! Mark and I just finished a weekend of Woopin up on ZO6s, nice to see you get it done on the AX course as well. Of course we are just beating up the locals;)
|
Andy Mckee had a faster time on the North Course I think but Gary Thomason in a Z06 had a faster time on the other course. Gary had a 107.135 combined time and Andy had a 107.310. SM2 had a fierce field this year with contenders like Bill Buetow and LJ Moffet in a Z06, Dan Pedroza and Jeremy Shuster in Miatas and Scotty White in an ASP Viper. Talk about a tough class. Andy won it last year but he probably isn't complaining about getting 2nd against all those guys.

I just got back from Topeka last night. It was awsome to watch Mckee and Thomason battle it out. Andy's car just takes a set and just rockets foward. I thought he was going to pull it out but Thomanson pulled it out in his last run. The announcer said exactly what time Gary needed to win. Everyone was watching it on the edge of their seats and then the board flickered Gary's time and half the crowd cheered and half slumped. It was great to be there for it.

Nice meeting other RX7 enthusiasts in Topeka. It always impresses me with how much they both love and know about their cars. -Andy |

Awesome, glad to see that the FD is still competitive when a great driver is behind the wheel :)
|
anyone happen to have some vids? Ive never pros ripping up on a autox course
|
Just go to a regional SCCA event and you can probably ride with a pro. Heck I am having 2 national champions co-drive my car with my girlfriend and I this weekend and I suck at driving.
|
kinda hard when im in the middleeast:) But when i get back i will
|
Andy can you post some pics of your wide body FD? It is pretty bad ass!
Thanks for the CCW's.... I'm putting them to good use. |

Here's a photo. Wheels are 17x11 front, 17x12 rear. Backspacing is 7.5". Front is 1 piece CF from 7parts.com, which gives a couple inches each side more fender clearance. Rear flares are from Pettit.

Andy,
Car looks awesome!! Congrats on the track wins!! -Keith |
Andy,
Do you know if 7parts.com is still around? Do you have contact info? Their web page had been down for a long time. |
^^
|
Awesome :D Congrats man!
|
Jeff Kiesel (owner) expects to have the site up in another few weeks.

http://www.scca.com/Event/Event.asp?...05-solo-champ# http://www.scca.com/_Filelibrary/File/solo05-finale.pdf I can't wait to join the class next year with our 20B RX7! |
Thanks Erik, I almost forgot I won something.;) Hopefully the improvements I'm making this winter will be enough to keep up with your monster motor!:)
-Andy |
Congrats Andy, your car always turns heads, especially when you turn it up for your last runs and shoot fire at the courseworkers! Somehow I've managed to be working on course every time I've seen you run (Atwater, San Diego, Wendover, etc), we all stop our conversations when you go by!
Missed Nationals this year due to business here, but we recently picked up an '89 GTUs for the new STS2 class (at least for ProSolo, anyway). -JW |
7parts is still around, spoke with Jeff on Sunday and he's just waiting for the site to be ready in a few weeks....its been down for quite a while!
|
Does anyone know why Jeff Kiesel and his co-driver were DQed at Nats? I just realized it when I saw the rundown in Sportscar.
|
Something about the rear taillights, I think, as his entire front and rear bodywork is composed of a one-piece shell of carbon-fiber with no provisions for rear lights.
Personally, I think it should have been thrown out, as his car was something like 80lbs overweight as it was, and any benefit of that modification was literally outweighed. Tough year for protests, the car that SHOULD have won STS was one that I built and developed last year with Paul Bonnacorsi and L&W Enterprises/Roy E. Whitehead, Inc., now driven by Will Kalman & others....long story, but while the protest was valid and noone was questioning its validity, it was done in a very sneaky way....something that could have been corrected if another competitor had brought it up to the driver/team rather than waiting....anyway, nevermind. Crazy, 'cause last year while SO MUCH could have been protested in many classes, there were hardly any. Oh well. -JamesW |

The header was too long. The cat was further back than stock.

ALWAYS check the work of whoever installs your stuff, even if you photocopy the rulebook and highlight the pages and give it to them. Having been deeply involved with the buildup of that car last year, I can say that it was an honest mistake that the guys (this year) made, with no intentions of bringing an illegal car. The repair was made after Day 1, and they were allowed to compete on Day 2, but their times were thrown out. If the protesting parties had notified the team BEFORE during practice or the other 3 days before competition they were there, instead of scheming to "catch them in a lie" or have an "ace in the hole". I am good friends with both parties, it was just poorly done, simple as that, no permanent harm done but a strict lesson learned. I would have liked to believe that the Solo community as a whole work together to have good clean competition, as we are still amateur racers, and I have seen numerous instances where "hey, that part seems to be illegal....let me help you fix it before we get racing so there is no problems", just not this time.
New RX-7 is running great, we will have it out in STS2 at the next local event 11/6 with BMWCCA. -JamesW |

Still, the margin was pretty big. Andy already scared me away once, from BS to STS, now I'm retreating again, from 600hp engines and 335 V710s to the land of gutless street tired econoboxes aka STS. Run away run away! :dark: |
Erik Strelnieks with a 3 Rotor now too? I think I am putting a rollbar in my Miata and making it a open track day car and buying something else for autocrossing so I can go to a easy class. My girlfriend never has been to excited about having to beat Angela Moffet for the regional series anyway.

Erik-
I know both parties well as well, and have a little better understanding of the *actual* condition of the vehicle in question, as well as the people and circumstances surrounding the issue in question. Subject of protests came up, but if you'd like it dropped, consider it done. I have nothing to "prove", a description of the protest in Fastrack will be an accurate depiction of the events that occured, we can read about it then. BTW-- I/we/my shop did not do the buildup, I was the development driver and setup monkey when I was working for Paul W. in his construction business, just in case your comments may indirectly suggest that my current business has a propesity for "building illegal cars". No worries though. Good to see you still have an RX-7, I remember the win in '99 in SS :-) |

No worries though. Good to see you still have an RX-7, I remember the win in '99 in SS :-) With Jeff's protest, the rear frame that holds the rear glass and such had been removed to allow for the one piece rear unit. This technically makes it a "tube-frame" type chassis that should incur a 10% weight penalty (~220lbs), therefore making his car overweight, as he was running with non-tube frame weight (and yes 80lbs over that limit). I don't know if Stan new about this problem before the Solo2... |
