Any experience with a Odyssey Battery?
 

I want to buy a smaller and lighter battery than the current boat anchor I have (group 75 @ 40lbs!). I was looking at the Odyssey 680 battery since it is small and easy to mount in tight places.

Has anyone run one of these (Ernie?)? I want to make sure that if I leave my cooling fans run for about 5 -10 min I won't have trouble starting the car.

I also like to crank the starter till I get oil pressure before I start the car when I change the oil (30sec cranking time).

I have a mini battery (680) and leaving the fans running for 10 minutes is not such a great idea. You can tell that the battery somewhat strains to get the car going after that.

That's not good. The only thing that may be different is that you FD has a lot more current draw (F/I system) than my stripped down carbed N/A motor. I run a single fan (approx 10A draw).

The other problem I can think of is that when I auto-x the car, I will shut the motor off and start it several times with out much run time to charge the bat back up.

That's a good point.... seems like these batteries take a while to charge. In fact, I remember seeing something about Harley Davidson users being suggested to run their bikes for like a half hour after a good crank.

I switched from the 45 lb batter that was in there to this one. I saved about 20 lbs, you can see its about 1/3 smaller. The good thing is that this battery is just as good as the one I replaced it with. It coses like 60 bucks at Pep-Boys. Its the smallest one they sell. They will not give you a warrany with it cause they say it was not designed for the car so you have to wave it. Kinda weird, been using it for 6 months and its great.

The one in your pic looks like a Miata battery.

I found this nice looking mount for the Odyssey battery. I called them and the dealer says he can crank his V-8 over about 20 times a day at demo's with this battery and still ahve it fire up to drive home. Anyone have any experience with cranking a rotory using this battery?

I have heard that thet take TWO DAYS to charge if they go dead. Is that correct?

I've got a Hawker 12V battery, not sure what it was originally intended for, but it's tiny, and light. Unfortunately, can't use it for actual racing, since gotta use the stock sized battery.

But it starts the car right up, charges and holds charge fine. My buddy with a 94 Camaro runs the same battery, but on his high compression 355, it has trouble :)

The one I have can barely start the car let alone cool if off for 5 minutes.....I would get a big one and mount it in the rear someplace.

im big into my hondas as well as my rotary. i came up with something a little better than the 51 seriers and smaller than our stockers. actually it was stocker than the 51 series as well, and half the weight. let me see if i can find my old thread. goodie, i found it(yes i was writing this and looking so it seems that i have a delayed responce, to myself:)). this is from a very well known honda store. kinda like the rx7 store of hondas if you will

That looks alot like a rebadged & SAE terminaled PC680. From what I've heard this is very common among the sealed batteries.

I wanted the small one to fit inside my fender (between fender and footwell) and the larger one won't fit
:( The trunk is not really an option for me due to the fuel cell and pumps and it is a real small trunk.

Don't you have a lot of electrical things to run on your car? Upgraded fuel pump, larger injectors (not sure if they draw more current?), F/I computer...

To start my car all I need is power to the starter and 2 amps for one of the fuel pumps (I can switch #2 on later). Oh, and I guess a few amps for the MSD.

Did heat make the battery worse? I hear that they dont like heat if you have them under the hood and they won't be able to supply full power.

The Miata battery that someone posted "Might" fit. It would be real tight due to the 5" width. The Honda battery is not real weight savings over what I already have (group 75 that I comes in at 30lbs on my scale).

It looks like a Hawker Genisis battery. I can find them at several online stores. Does it have a part number on it? Can you give me some dimensions?
