anyone considering a 2jz or 1jz swap. please read
hello everyone
i currently own a 2jz gte rx7 ( FD ) and have personally gone through the swap myself, no shops or help from friends of any kind and well..... i am here to help you!!! i know how frustrating and exhausting building a car can be, especially if you are building one alone. since i have the experience with this set up and documented EVERYTHING i did, i am more than happy to share my knowledge with people. -Tony |
You dont happen to work for tech2, do ya?
Their customer service is horrible from what i hear. Chances are good i'll be looking for a shifter extension and z32 front yolk to TII shaft kit. I'd rather not wait 6 months to a year for those items when the time comes because i damn sure dont plan to be motorless when i pop my rotary. Before anyone starts, i'm not modifying anything that would inhibit me from swapping back and forth from 13b to jz to ka/sr/rb. I'm keeping my car for a while and chances are good i'm going to try out alot of different engines. |
no he doesnt work for tech2
|
Wow impressive man.
|
Wouldn't happen to have a link to a 2jgte ecu pin out would you?
|
thats all over the net man look on supra forums ... and yes cant wait to get my harness back ill post up pics of teh work.
|
that crazy man :) sounds like an awesome car:D!
|
I will be taking vids of my car this week end. it sounds and drives like a monster stay tuned :-)
|
Very helpful guy.
I think I may take you up on that offer. I currently have a MegaSquirt setup on my 2J, but will probably need help tying in everything for the stock gauges to operate like stock. But I'll cross that road when I get to it. Also, for profession I'm a product development engineer focusing on mechanical design. In my spare time I design things like this engine subframe as well as run static simulations. Once my swap is done, we can share designs for the subframe, as well as any other parts and get them manufactured. I'll keep an eye on this thread. My build thread is on SupraForums, as I'm new here and don't know anyone. :) |
mk3brent, you seem like ur heading in the same direction as i am! stay in touch with me maybe one day we can meet up and possibly start something epidemic here with both our skills and knowledge.
oh and BTW WELCOME to the RX7 forums! im a member on the supra forums too my S/N is Tmoneyrx7

Here's a link to my build-diary. http://www.supraforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=602170 It's going to take some time. :) |
Mk3brent A guy local to me (Canada) didn't have to buy the scoot hood he got the stock hood to clear with a bit of massaging
Oh wait... he did the 1jz |
yea the 2jz sits much higher than the 1jz, you can make the 2jz fit with stock but the motor will be inches off the ground, which to me, its not safe!! and then since the motor is lower, so would be the tranny and the diff will have to come down as well, personally, i dont think its worth it,
|
Tony,
Do you have a shop to do the swaps? Can you post some pics of your FD swap? Just asking cause I'm getting tired of troubleshooting my triangles and not sure if I will have time to do the swap myself. Steve |

I'm starting to get used to the scoot style hood. VIS. :) I'll probably buy mine in a couple weeks. |

Can anyone help me out with the dimensions of a 2JZ..
Height Bottom of sump to top of intake manifold or head? Height from bottom of block to top of intake manifold or head or total height of sump? Length from gearbox flange to front of crank pulley? and weight, and condition when weighed? |
Nice work on the fuse box relocate.
What hood are you planning to go with? |

I don't need 100% accuracy +/- half and inch would be great.

solid ass work right there man
|
Are you running a stand alone ecu? if so which and if not did you find out the way to get the stock cluster to function with the 2j?
|
I'm running stock ecu and in order to make i
ur stock cluster work you will need Dakota digital units, you need one for tach and one for speedo |
dakota digital speedo part number is SGI-5C and the tach is SGI-8D
|
Damn Tony....so, looks like no hood stands a chance of fitting on that thing. Still love it.

i was thinking in fabricating my own
|
I am about to get my stock one done by a body shop. Hopefully it turns out good. They quoted me $400. Its a little steep but I have not gotten a chance to try out my tig welder. And welding aluminum is tricky.
What shocks and springs are you using? I need to change my stock ones. My car got really low with the weight of the beast motor :). I have to shoot a video. I am really surprised how this car pulls with the stock 1J. |
This is good stuff, Im in the middle of my own build.
Taking a little longer then expected but I just finished the subframe and tranny mount. Do you have any pictures of your custom subframe? I may have some wiring questons for you soon. Do you have a write up on it? I really like the fuse boxes in the back Nice work |
|
Ok Tony, video time!
|
hahaha its coming its coming, i just added 550cc injectors tonight, i need to get myself a vid camera or a bigger memory card, iphone only does 15 secs :-/
|

took the car to storage, my brother recorded the video as a co-pilot ( not a great vid ) but cool sound
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlijT...eature=channel and heres a pic of the car in its temporary home while my house is under construction, i drove it just like that, which is extremely illegal in shitty ass NJ lol Attachment 712944 |
Awesome stuff man.
|
Thank you for not putting a whistling bov on that thing.
it sounds awesome and 3rd gear looks EXTREMELY FUN in that beast. |
Wow, that thing looks really clean and sounds incredible. I don't think I will ever pull the rotary out of my car, but if I ever change my mind I will definitely give you a call. Great job man.
|
Respect.
|
Nice to see some one helping the Swapped community. 350 for wiring is a gift. Clean Work. Free Bump
