I picked up a 1993 Red R1 back in June without a motor. I have been slowly been making progress over the last few months and am in the process of getting it ready for a complete color change to Carbon Grey Metallic. I will be running a built 4G63 with a PTE6262 and should easily make 550-600whp on straight pump gas. I will be using an AEM v2 box for an ECU. The traction control and boost by gear should help put the power to the ground. I am keeping the RX7 trans + rear end. I will also have power steering and A/C. I am building it to be a fun street car. Here are some pics of the progress so far:

D50/mighty max tranny or a bell housing adapter? Looks like it'll be fun :)
|
Wow, seems very thorough and way interesting! Definitely want to see how this unfolds

Valve cover, intake manifold, and other small items are at the powder coater now. I just picked up some missing interior plastics from Fritz yesterday so there are only a few small items left and the interior will be complete. Once the car is painted I will be going they the stock main harness, cleaning it up, and re-looming it the best I can.

Nice!!!. Pics of the shifter hole please? I am very very very interested in the turbo manifold setup. It looks like it sucks the turbo close enough to the block to fit in a Colt. Any dimesions, solidoworks ect. of the mani?

You fucker! I was debating on doing this swap to my shell but decided to stay rotary. Seeing you do it to your car makes me wanna change my mind again. Very nice!

Im using the stock trans, driveshaft, and rear so the shifter is still in the stock location. The manifold is made from 1.5" schedule 10 stainless. I don't have any drawings as I don't draw any of them before hand. I have an idea in my head that I just go with and tweak it till I'm happy with how it looks.

From my research, it shouldn't be that hard of a swap to accomplish, all things considered.

This is being built over at TurboTrix, correct? I'll have to check it out sometime. I'm doing a 2J car about an hour away near Philly.

Modified my fuel pump sender and installed a Walbro 400 pump today. I welded a -8an fitting to the end of the feed line and ran 10 gauge power and ground directly to the pump.

What are you going to do for a sub-frame?

I've been looking at doing this as well, can't find a B2600 bellhousing very easily.

Go on car-part.com and search that site. They had a few of them when I got mine. |
Cool Thanks!

this is def very original, good on you for doing the conversion. Im a rotary fanatic but i fully appreciate what you are doing, hell ive help put rotaries in so many different types of vehicles what you are doing is no different! keep it up :)

Got half the car painted today. We will hopefully be finishing the last half tomorrow. Then I can put it back together and start on the wiring.

Looks good man! I'm just finishing up my sbc fc project. Well I haven't started the body yet, but I need to get a cage before that. My buddy did this swap in his fc. That car would pull the front end with slicks on it. Whoever asked about the headers for a colt, look up shearer in cleveland. That's one of their specialties.

nice! cool to see something like this!

I decided to refinish my interior plastics since they were pretty beat. I used Duplicolor Adhesion promoter, flat black vinyl/fabric paint, and clear coat. Here are some pics.

Nice Job man. Been working on mine for like five years, just been so busy with life I never got it finished. But how did you get the motor to sit so low, I had to cut my hood.
1. Stock Hood. I hate the way any aftermarket hoods look on the FD. 2. Stock Gauge cluster. I like the way the stock gauges look and wanted to keep them all functional 3. Power steering. I feel its a must for a street car 4. A/C. Another must for a street car. Nobody likes driving around while their nuts do the backstroke in their underwear. 5. Stock DSM cam sensor. Its always worked for me and I am not a fan of the aftermarket crank trigger setups. 6. Stock Thermostate housing. I didn't want to have any cooling issues so it only made sense to keep the system cooling the way it does stock. |

Thanks man. Not showing off or anything, but I was actually the first one I know of to put a 4G63 in a FD. Way before MAPerformance and anyone else. My motor was sitting in the shell I bought since 2006. But since I never finished it(wiring etc), I'm actually the last to do it...lol. Life happened for me, moving twice, buying properties, changing careers and now a divorce. The car sat untouched at one point for 3 years. I hope to get it running before 2012 is out though.
|
Wow very nice work. 4G63 is def a motor made to make some power, if you build them right. haha There is a local performance company that has a 4G64 in a FD that has over 1000whp. The company is called Maperformance.

There is a video of 4G63 in an FD on youtube. He has the stock gauges working, stock hood etc. Video is from a year or two ago. I know I'm not the first to do it and I definitely won't be the last since the 4G63 is such a bad ass motor. They will pretty much make 550+ whp on pump gas by accident. :)

Got the FMIC and AC condensor painted flat black and mounted today. Bump steer kit is modified and done, Sway bar is spaced, both steering rack boots are changed. Cut fittings on oil cooler and welded -8an fittings to it. Mounted oil cooler, brake master and clutch master cylinder. Painted calipers black, had rotors cut, installed new pads and stainless lines. I will be making my own ABS delete kit. The lines and valves came in yesterday but I am just waiting for a few fittings before I can install it. I also ran tthe fuel line from the sender to the fuel filter. Hoping to start the wiring this week so its all ready to go when I put the motor in.

Yeah I saw the video. I think its because you guys are using a modified factory subframe. I used the Granny's speed shop V8 subframe then modified it, just so I can go V8 later if I wanted. But the 1" higher mine sits wont really make a difference. I'm using a full TEC3R standalone and a Painless elecrtical harness. The tach and speedo will work fine 'cause I have a have a speedo adapter and I have aftermarket gauges for the others. And dude...the 4G63 is the most awesome 4cyl turbo engine on the planet. I've been into them since the late 90's and I've seen them make 1000+ hp easily. You chose wisely..lol

Is there any chance you have pictures of the adapter plate you made?

Got my ABS delete installed. I ended up making the kit myself. I got the proportioning valve from chase bays.com and the lines/fittings from anplumbing.com. I also got my stainless clutch line from anplumbing.com since they sell pre-made -3an hose. I'm happy with the way it came out. I also finished my enigne harness and started cleaning up the stock harness and tucking/wire looming the ugly stuck harness. I'm still waiting for my rods to come in before I can put the motor in. Here are some pics of the ABS delete.

Hook a fellow DSMer up with a shot of that adapter plate. I have a bunch of spare 4G63 stuff and an S4 with a bad motor. You do the math. :) I have a lead on a G54B bellhousing too.

Here is a picture of the adapter plate:
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...-43-42_555.jpg I am getting closer to finishing the car. The wiring is 85% done. I trimmed, loomed, and tucked the main stock harness. The engine harness is ran into the engine bay. I ended up running it up the driver side and have it coming out under the the hole in the side of the engine bay under the brake booster. AEM, injector driver box, ignitor, and relays are all mounted in the trunk and wired. I need the motor in so I can run the wires to the alternator and starter and finish the mount for the battery. The motor is on the stand but I am still waiting on the rods which will be another two weeks before I can finish assembly. http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...-39-05_967.jpg |
