1993 RX7 1JZGTE swap in Guam

2 1/2 years ago I decided to get myself one of the best sports cars ever. The 1993 RX7 FD3S. It sat around 73,000 miles. 3 weeks later i take it on a cruise and it over heats so bad that a an inch of the water jacket melts off. Further research on the rotary engine i knew i needed something else. LSX motors are phenomenal engines but i wanted an import motor and found the 1JZGTE
Here she is

There was this nasty boonie bee clump in my spark plug holes! So fyi this is not rust, it is just dirt. So i cleaned it up and put a new headgasket while i was at it.

Thanks for the positive comments. There was actually 1 main reason. Being in Guam were very limited to resources and it was actually a blessing to find this motor normally this motor along with the SR20DET and LSX motors are gone within the day. And if you outsource from Japan or anywhere else it is averaged around $5000 including shipping. I dont have that deep of pockets haha

aznmagic 03-02-12 03:42 PM

Changed my waterpump out and purged my lines since there was more boonie bee dirt :(

Got my 2jz 550cc injectors. They fit the motor but they dont fit the wiring harness connectors. Time to shave off those nubs
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k5...6/f701059e.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k5...6/42869f71.jpg

Along with these injectors i need to get a resistor pack. But they are $250..... Its friggin resistors. Good thing my job is electrical an i can make my own. Thanks to digikey (just ordered yesterday) i will be receiving 4.7 ohm 25 watt resistors for the price of $27.46 :)

Haha thanks man. I do like the lime green matte black look, but it sucks that i have anodized blue. If only they have lime green pulleys and timing gears :(

You have a build too? Pics?!!!!!! Idnt receive my subframe yet. Ordered it from www.shiftedperformance.com

Being in Guam it takes awhile.

Schaft-haha wont exactly rattle can it. There is this thing at home depot called preval. Look it up on youtube. Its basically a spraycan compressor and you can add automotive paint to the attached glass container. Its pretty sweet.

charlie 7 03-02-12 09:45 PM

No pics yet but im in the process of buying all the stuff tha i will need ... I dnt know if I should go with shifted performance or tech2 kit!!! Why did u go with shifted instead of tech2..????
Im goin to call them tomorrow to see what can they offer me!!!!

schaft 03-02-12 10:04 PM

Ah...so a fancy rattle can

I went shifted performance cuz theyre prices were cheaper, but still reliable and Tony is a great guy to deal with. Let me know what you want and i can talk to him.

Schaft
-haha yes a very fancy rattle can. A lot of businesses use it for touch ups actually.

charlie 7 03-02-12 10:15 PM

Well i want to get the kit but his doesn't include the drive shaft .... did you ask him about ground clearance?

schaft 03-02-12 10:17 PM

All my parts are there sprayed with a automotive grade spray gun or are being shipped out to the powder coaters, I'm just messing with you on the spray paint I only have 1 thing on my car spray painted.
Looking forward to the rest of this build

aznmagic 03-03-12 02:21 AM

charlie 7

Hmmmm PM me all the stuff you need exactly and I will send you a quote. I'm using a driveshaft from KSRACING in Thailand. BTW, don't get KSRACING kit, they are complete garbage, for $300 I got it and it was a waste of cash. But the driveshaft I got from them is actually pretty legit. Haven't fitted it on yet from the tranny to the diff but I'll let you know. If anything I'll get it customized

Hehe that's the way to go. I've learned my lesson now with the spray painting. It took awhile but I realized that the UV rays just destroy the paint after a month or two. Thanks, I'm looking forward to it too. I'm looking at painting the car gunmetal.

Thanks man. Im actually going to learn how to paint... Im kinda scared but i want to be able to say "built not bought" on my car. Its gonna look so sexy

Charlie 7
Im awaiting an email from shifted
Performance ill let you know as soon as possible. If you can please pm me a good email for quicker responses

aznmagic 03-03-12 08:53 PM

I havent really mentioned where i got all my parts and knowledge from
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k5...6/24fcbe2f.jpg
www.shiftedperformance.com

Tony is very knowledgable in this build and i have to say...being thousands of miles away from him he has still helped me with this build. That alone is a feat itself with issues such as wiring, making sure the engine wont blow with what i put on it. Honestly i didnt know anything about cars and performing this swap with shifted performance's help has made me a lot more knowledgable in how my car works, performs, and what it is capable of

aznmagic 03-04-12 03:32 PM

Right now im working on painting my oil catch can the gunmetal color as well as clearing up my lights with mothers headlight restore after sanding. Then mebe this week ill prep my engine bay for painting ;)

schaft 03-04-12 03:36 PM

Keep the pics coming.

charlie 7 03-04-12 10:06 PM

Well since we got a new post office, ive been waiting since october for them to deliver it. But then i get worried and ask Tony if it got back to him. And apparently it just got back to Tony :( so im probably going to FEDEX it now. Yeah i was honestly thinking if making my own bumpsteer correction kit because of the price, but i need to do a lot of research on fabricating it

charlie 7 03-06-12 04:14 PM

Also on that note there are a total of 2-3 supras on island in which only 1 of them is actually kind of running. So its very hard to get a complete motor on island. And there is also no dyno....

charlie 7 03-06-12 06:06 PM

Damn sucks!!!!
Im goin to do the 1jz swap
Just b cuz is alil smaller then the 2j tha will give a lil more room for the hood...

Engine Swapping on Guam??????

Most of us who do these swaps have the convenience of numerous parts stores, salvage yards, and here in Seattle, at least a half dozen Japanese engine importers. It will certainly take some inventiveness and improvising skills to do it so far away from mainstream automotive mania ( i.e., California). You get extra points for tackling this job under challenging circumstances!

My father was a civilian working for the Air Force, and was chief planning engineer for Anderson AFB. He started with the wartime Quonset huts in about 1950, and when he died in 1966, the Air Force had more money invested in Anderson than any air base in the world. I spent my summers there starting in 1954, when I was 16 years old, got my first drivers license on Guam. I drove around the island in my father's 1948 Studebaker. By about 1956 it had rusted to the point it was just scrap. Virtually all of the WWII jeeps were dissolved to rust by the early 1950s. People who have not lived there cannot appreciate the corrosion problems you have to deal with.

I recently did a Skyline swap into a 1984 RX-7, but I can't imagine doing it in the middle of the Pacific! Some photos here: https://www.rx7club.com/nw-rx-7-forum-33/next-project-982785/

Thanks for the brownie points!!! Im glad someone can understand the amount of work and corrosion control being put into this build. It must have been completely different for you and your father to be here back then. Its somewhat different now, well at least they dont have those huts. But Andersen is definitely growing in so many ways.

Your swap looks phenomenal! I wish i knew how to fabricate... One step at a time. First im learning how to paint. More on that after i complete my catch can with gunmetal ;)

Starting to sand my bumper for the car paint. This will be my second test in car painting.

ALMOST THERE!!

Ahhhh just need the bottom part finished then its time to paint it.
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k5...6/556dd7bb.jpg

They say painting is VERY easy. Its the prep time that is the most difficult. So i want to take my time with everything on painting. I already lost my patience with my catch can....yup 3rd time is the charm

aznmagic 03-07-12 02:22 PM

Had some time to work on my catch can. I didnt like the color so im painting it to gunmetal, its primered right now and will be awaiting its new paint later today*

Catch Can

1 Attachment(s)
If you looked at my Cardomain pages, you saw the Stiletto project. Well, since you are working on your catch can, I thought you would like to see the one I used on the Stiletto. I thought that since the motor is Kawasaki, I should use a Japanese catch can.
