Corvette Brakes
Hi Chris,
love the build, I have got a question for you about the brakes, I'm building a FD3S RX8 over here in the UK and was looking at putting C6 Z06 6 pot calipers onto my build. Mad i know but i think quite cool. I was wondering how exactly you did your brake conversion. I see you made a custom bracket to fit them onto the original fittings, CNC machined, Which if you had the spec for i love if you would send me the details on. Did you use the Corvette brake discs? If so was there much modification required? other than that anything worth noting? If you could help tat would be great :icon_tup: Paul |
wow super nice ride love all the work thats been done to it top notch

I think Chris have a set of C6 Z06 6 pot calipers with a cnced adapter for the rx8. he never used and had them for sale.. |
Heat Update
8 Attachment(s)
Typical of these builds heat becomes an issue. Specially on the RX-8 where the factory engine bay does not have extra space for turbo components. I found myself worrying every time I wanted to put the foot down about whether the heat of the pull would ruin something under the hood. It had already softened the sheath that was over the engine harness and with the front right brake line running in close vicinity to the DP I figured enough was enough. This was regardless of the heat shielding I have on the turbo which helps a lot.
I immediately though about venting. I knew all I needed was some airflow as it is basically nonexistent in the OEM engine bay. I don't like any of the available vented hoods, they are either too flashy or too "strakey" (if that's a word) not to mention expensive and more importantly, heavier than the aluminum OEM unit. I decided to try to vent the OEM hood in a manner that doesn't disrupt the OEM lines of the car and still provides ample airflow. Attached are some pics of the work in progress...I will post more when it is completed. And yes, the vents will end up satin black, not silver. I just spent most of my afternoon reading through your thread, very good work. I'll be sure to subscribe for future updates!

Hood is now dent/hail free and primered. Different primer will go on the vents as that is exposed aluminum.

Paint on...Clear Next, then buff and finally, Satin Black to the grills. So far so good :)

Hood is done. Semi-Gloss black on the grills...it looks amazing in person and the panel bond used to attach the grills is so strong that it didn't loose any strength. Super satisfied.

Hood
Really looks good, and more importantly functional.
U do surprise me sometimes. Do u have some pics of the underside? I'm curious to know how u tidied/finished the inside as I'm looking at venting mine too, tho a different design. Ps. The 20b is getting close to running. |

The 20b is getting close to running. I dont have pics of the underside but can take some. I havent tidied it up yet underneath. I just have a cutout the same shape as the top and I filed all the sharp edges away. The plan is to use some of this material underneath: http://www.ebay.com/itm/281284140112?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT So that it keeps the hood from getting damaged by heat. I will post more pics as soon as I get a chance. Glad the 20B is close :) Chris |
Looks good but what about if it rains.

Quick update
Got the front cover off the Renesis so I could see what I would be dealing with installing this cover onto a BRE front plate. On Wednesday I fly to Puerto Rico for a week for business but while there will visit a friend that has a rotary shop. He has succesfully installed the Renesis front cover onto REW/BRE engines and with a bit of modification has gotten the Renesis OMP etc working properly so it doesn't require premix. From talking to him I know there will be a bit of clearancing required to get the front cover on simply because on the renesis the front counterweight is sunk into the front plate and on earlier models the counterweight is out into the front cover. He also said something about drilling an oil passage or something...we'll see. Here you can see the front cover off the engine http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/v...n/IMAG0602.jpg Here you can clearly see how the front counterweight is sunk into the renesis plate http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/v...n/IMAG0604.jpg Another from a different angle. http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/v...n/IMAG0603.jpg |

13b re transmission
Sorry to bring up a dead thread, but quick question.
Did you use a stock rx8 transmission for this swap? I'm currently trying to mate my 13b re with a series 1 rx8 trans using act 6 Puck clutch and pressure plate, prolite flywheel and 13b re stock counterweight. A new pilot bearing and release bearing also installed. However, there seems to be a 2 inch gap around the trans and engine bellhousing. I'm pretty certain the trans input shaft is seated in the engines pilot as when cranking the engine (in gear) I can hear the drive shaft moving. I can also see a couple of nicks in the pilot bearing after taking the engine back out suggesting it was seated in there. When I measure the trans input shaft it seems as if its slightly too long - I.e its seating in the engine at the point where there'd still be a 2 inch gap from the bellhousing to trans. I've been told the 6 speed rx8 trans should bolt up to this engine using an aftermarket flywheel and act clutch kit, while keeping the counterweight. The only thing I can think of is that I should be using a series 2 trans or I've missed something blatantly obvious. Did you have any similar issues? Any help would be much appreciated. |
