REPU engine swap

I am putting an engine from a 87 rx7 into my 74 REPU. I know I have to put the from cover from the original REPU engine onto the rx7 engine, will there be a gasket I have to replace for that? If so, do I get a gasket for a REPU or for an rx7? what would be a good placee to get the gasket if there is one?
thanks

engine swap

There is a gasket that you will need to replace and also a small "O" ring that must be in place, it deals with the lubrication of the engine. Be aware that if the front pulley is removed, there is the chance that the needle bearing can fall out and damage can occur. I sugest to get a manual and get familiar with the procedure to remove the main pulley.

so when I replace the gasket should I get one for a 1974 REPU or for a 1987 rx7?

I have a haynes manual for the fc, hopefully that explains the front pulley removal well enough that I won't have any problems.
thanks

it does not matter. they are the same. they may have different part numbers, but identical in size. there should be no problem w/ using the 87 (easier to have a store locate for you) . why no ttake the cover of the repu and try it on the 87 and see for your self. this will be sure to answer all questions and doubts you may have.

thanks, I was hoping to know that for sure before I get the engine hoist and pull the old motor out. that way I could get the hoist for a day, pull the motor out, swap front cover and put it back the same day. I am thinking that I will have to borrow that hoist a second time so I can have the motor out a couple weeks and make sure everything is a-ok with it.

There are diferences in the gaskets from gen. to gen. you are corect on the bolt patern of the cover. The diference is where the O-ring mates to the front cover some blocks have diferent casting where the O-ring sits, some use a nylon retaining bushing to keep the o-ring in place. If you require this nylon ring and dont install it you blow out the O-ring as soon as you fire it up, And if you use it when you dont need it this will cause many oil leaking problem in the future. www.mazdatrix.com
have a very detailed write up on this problem and will tell you how to spot the diference in castings for the diferent years.

Im not tring to slam any one he is correct about the front covers.
But there are diferent castings of the front cast-iron housings good luck.

Dont forget you also have to change the oil pan, need to use the one from the old engine, delotto side carb will fit perfect on the 87 engine intake.....if you plan to sell it later on let me know...love to have one once again....:p
