You need key on voltage to the "R" terminal on the back of the alternator.

Thats what I pretty much figured out, Ive just gotta find out where to get a switched 12V at under the hood. I was hoping to be able to just get it from the original harness that the Voltage regulator would have plugged into.

The 81-88 alternators need a 12v to trigger the field terminal (upper male connector on the 2 wire pig tail). just tap run a wire from this point to the igniters 12-V (trace the wire from coil + to igniter +).

Upgrade to FC engine fuse block and at same time, run an 8 gauge cable from alternators B terminal, and move the stock white-red wire from B terminal to fuse block. This will prevent the upgraded alternator from over heating in and less clutter

Hi Guys!!!! not to highjack the thread but im having the same issue I have a 73 RX2 and a 84 alternator/ engine 12a. all my wires are cut and spliced everywhere so its been difficult to figure it out.
