datsun 510 13b TII swap.
Just started my project tonight, i bought a 1988 rx7 turbo II car and I am swapping it into my 1972 Datsun 510 wagon. the wagon is stock its; under 2200 pounds, 92HP at the crank, 3 speed auto. so it should wake it up. I will also need to come up with some way of making a lsd fit in it. I bought a FMIC on eBay I'm waiting for it now, bought a 3" vibrant turbo muffler, the exhaust will be a 3" down pipe and all the way back to the muffler and i will be getting some kinda resonator for it. taking off all the stuff i don't need on the motor, air pump, ac, ps, and i will make my block off plates. some pics so far.....

A month ago I was %100 sure that you guys wouldn't think twice about putting a rotary in that thing. You guys were all about the SR20 or built L20B, now look!
Funny how people change...for the better :) |
Rotary in a 510 :icon_tup:
If you gonna use the stock ecu be prepare for a big head ache, and get your self a shop manual. I suggest you go with the stand alone makes it a lot easier to wire the motor. I wish I can show you the one I just finished but my desk top computer crash and I lost most of my photo's.... Good luck with the swap. |
Nice!
Thats one clean 510! Keep us posted of your build up, |
Shame to see a straight TII get scrapped... but a nice 510 wagon.

this is in need of a update
its ready to be pulled out. i have every wire from the car out and all still connected to the motor. so its like all on top it. just need to finish building my crane lift thing. and it can come out, with everything on top of it. then take some stuff off it and do a little cleaning, block off plates. I bought a fmic on eBay for 58$ still need a BOV and couple other little things. pics of motor with ALOT of wires on top. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x...g?t=1193104805 http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x...g?t=1193104822 i need to get some pcis of the lift we made when its done. its made out of a 3/4T Chev rear end and some other random scrap from work. |

Nice engine hoist! I used to have a 510, the only thing that turned me off on the rotary swap was having to cut the firewall and tranny tunnel to place the engine further back in the engine bay. Keep us posted

ya I'm not really sure if its going to need to be cut yet, maybe a little. but the Datsun is the automatic, from what i understand there is a bigger trans hump so it might fit. with out cutting. |
WOW, that looks a bit scary! i think ill stick with the 12a for a while.
cant wait to see this thing fly! |

you can minimize the amount of trans tunnel and firewall cutting if you use a gsl-se center housing and oil pan. unfortunately, you would have to take the engine apart to change the housing and flip the oil pan around, but it would allow you to mount the engine on the factory crossmember if you fab the mounts. the install will look a lot cleaner. i dont have a wagon, but on my coupe, i just needed to hammer out a spot on the trans tunnel for the slave cylinder.
i've attached a few pics from a car that i was modeling mine after. so i can't take credit for being the first to do this. but i have to give props, this setup was the cleanest i've ever seen for a rotary into a 510. granted it isn't a turboII motor, but i think the key install points warrant some merit. |
