Carb tuning needed

Anyone have a lil know how on tuning a 48Weber IDA? We have completed the TRE dogg, and the initial tune is great but Im looking to maximize the potential Of the carbs and motor. Let me know if you have some pointers and/or if you can adjust carbs like a pro.

4 what?! I learn better by doing rather then digging through opinions from members. Im looking for a person who knows how:egrin: to tune a carb. Not a book to tell me how to do it.
GIVE ME THE FISH. ILL LEARN HOW TO FISH LATER!

Siraniko 08-23-11 06:25 PM

L just bring it over,.u take it apart and i will tell you the sequence of operation while i drink a cold brewsky. Thats the only way to tell what r inside and for u to learn

datfast1 08-25-11 06:30 PM

Yah, don't forget the heineis. Wacky needs to be buss to do a good tuning on Webers, LOL!!!

Any updates on ur carb tune?

AuthoritySucks 09-02-11 07:29 PM

Na, Wacky was "Busy" last weekend. Anyone know a PRO??

Try the guys at RRR (rotary racing & reliability) out in Orange. Nelson or Nick should be able to help you out. Nick helped me out a little with my IDA setup when i was having problems. And they can get you any jet you might need...usually within 1-2 days. GL

Are you having N E issues with the tune? 48IDA's are pretty decent set up. Actually got a couple of pair still laying around the garage I think.

Basically, with the carb set up your gonna be going through a lot of plugs while tuning (depending how cold your plugs are ). There really isn't that much involved with tuning a carb. In a nutshell you've got:
  1. Velocity Stack - enhance your response/torque (top, bottom, or mid range ) depending on stack height/diameter.
  2. Venturi's - again tuning of your air speed/volume.
  3. Throttle Plate - adjustment
  4. Linkage - Make sure it's not binding and you're throttle plate is vertical at max pedal.
  5. Emotion Tube - where fuel and air mixture takes place.
  6. Air (Main) Jet - goes onto your emotion tube to set air/fuel ratio mixture.
  7. Fuel (Main) Jet - fixed onto your emotion tube to set air/fuel ratio mixture.
  8. Idle Jet - controls fuel at idle.
  9. Mixture Screw's - adjustment for rich/lean (mostly effects idle)

Carb's are simple, limited because everything is based on "Jet Size" or in other words a hole which, is fixed therefore depending on what you are tuning for will effect other area's of driving.

Back in the day used to ALWAYS keep an extra plug set in the car! Also, daily driving usually ran 1 step hotter plugs.....Only changed plugs right before a race ;) to help eliminate the chances of a mis-fire.

One thing you probably want to get your hands on is a synchro meter. Will make throttle plate adjustment a breeze.

Good way to start off call someone like Racing Beat up and see what spec's they recommend for your set up. Once you get that you can change the tune based on the type of driving you want to do. The more "race" tune you go with will cost you fuel/drivability.

NEthingJDM 09-07-11 12:07 PM

Oh, yea in case you don't know what a synchro meter looks like (don't know how young you guys are ;) )

I went out into the garage and found this for ya! Took a couple of quick snap shots for ya.

Enjoy!

Not doubting that one bit but, I'm a numbers type of guy. More information you have, doesn't hurt. Harvesting data can make a difference... F1 set the standard... I think the best the rest of us can do is just try to keep up ;)

AuthoritySucks 09-17-11 11:50 AM

Still need a tuner!!

If you really need a tuner, and your in Los Angeles. Check out Jeff McCall at Rotary Power (I think) cant remember his company's name. He's in Gardena CA right off 182nd St & Western Ave (Harvard to be exact). He's super old school and has been doing this for decades.

Good Luck!

Next time give me me at leasr a 24hr notice, be sure to have a 42 and. 43 ve turies 150 air or less, 200 main and 65 n 70 idle jet. I finally got a day off since 3rd quarter just ended. I haye smart phones lol

Siraniko 09-21-11 12:32 PM

That gauge is for the newbies somewhat helpful but without playing with other components it is somewhat useless. No disrespect to jeff but he isnt in my list of local carb tuner. anyone can just pull a racing beat catalog or scca rule book but too slow for street use

That's correct, That gauge is only for the idle anyway, It will never replace a good ear and experience. I would contact Albert at rotary engineering, Johnny PHE or Jeff Mcall at rotary power, All old school racers with results not just forum hype.
