Need a Job
Out of the blue 4:15pm, the boss comes over to me and says walk with me, ok, and then says I have to let you go, as a drive tech your not making money for the company, but I would like for you to resigne and that way it will go over easyer with the other techs and I will see to it the you get to collect unemployment. There ant a shop out there that has a full time drive tech, they just dont make money, AT AJ's it was a lost leader to get customers in. Well he lied throught his teeth, he has a money maker rehire coming back, and needs a spot, the guy is the last person in the world I would ever recommend to work on any bodys car. So I'm for hire
Yeah, you're screwed if you let him do that.
You should make sure and tell them that the only way you are leaving is if they fire you.
That's the only way you're gauranteed unemployment.

But then again, "layed off" is a typical term when used to collect unemployment benefits... Correct?
I know a BUNCH of guys who I work road construction with (in the summer) who collect FAT unempoyment checks after being "laid-off" when the work's over...
Seems kind of scandalous (in their case), that's why I don't follow suit...
I.E. We KNOW there's only a certain amount of work, but they claim they were "laid-off" and therefore are able to claim high $ amount unemployment checks... I don't know, in reality you ARE getting laid off (position no longer available/needed) so to ask to be FIRED (which has a negative connotation attached to it)... I don't know.
Read up on the 'how to file for unemployment' website(s) and make sure you're qualified ASAP.
Call the employment office and see if there will be a difference in benefits or length of benefits if you resign versus being fired/downsized.
If they let you go yesterday, go to the Unemployment office and start your claim. There typically is a week waiting period, so if you register this week, it will save you waiting an extra week to receive your first UnEm check.

I am in a different situation at my work. Part of the agreement for me quiting my other job to come there was that I would still be full time like I was at my last job... Even if I wasn't getting full time hours. So for about 1 week or two I was getting full time hours and since then I have not been getting anywhere close to full time hours. I have been there for over 6 months now and 2 weeks ago I asked when I was going to get holiday pay for Memorial day because I han't got it (I had been there for 6 months at that point)? I was told "you are part-time... You don't get benefits". I just about lost it right there. I was so pissed (still are). I just about asked my boss "where you there for my interview? I remember you being there, I know I was there, now where were you?" Just plain rediculous! Definately get in touch with unemployment before your Bastard of a boss railroads you. Best of luck, make sure you get all that you deserve!
