Description:

Summary

As titled, this is a 1994 RX-7 with a bridgeported single turbo engine. Most of the parts installed and work done is from 2012. I’m listing the good and the bad up front and believe I have priced it accordingly. I’m willing to negotiate and although this isn’t a car I need to sell (other than to clear room for what’s next) I am incentivized to sell by the end of the year.

Backstory

I have owned this car since 2010 and have enjoyed it in modified twin turbo, streetported single turbo and bridgeported single turbo form. Early on in my ownership I had many word of mouth contacts for helping acquire parts, engine building, tuning and track time. I have not maintained those contacts and things that were once easy are now hard. Year after year I tell myself, I’ll get something on my list of known issues resolved, but it’s basically been in the same condition as it was in 2012. Hoping someone can take on this project and get it where it should have been long ago.

Summary

•         Tuned at 15PSI making about 400whp on Mach Vs dyno in Sterling VA in 2012

•         Motor has about 3000 miles and was replaced in 2012 with a factory shortblock (from the dealer) and was immediately sent for bridgeporting

Notable Parts Installed

·         Factory remanufactured shortblock from Mazda, bridgeported, Atkins Rotary apex seals

·         Metering pump blocked off to allow running synthetic oil (MUST PREMIX AND MAKE SURE DECEL FUEL IS ENABLED IN TUNING)

·         AEM EMS using UEGO wideband and GM MAP sensor

·         ACT 6 puck clutch

·         550cc primary and 1680cc secondary injectors on rx7store fuel rail

·         Replaced factory engine harness (OEM replacement from Mazda)

·         Replaced factory primary and secondary ignition coils

·         HKS Ignition amplifier

·         Koyo radiator with Mishimoto radiator hoses

·         Garrett GT3582R on HKS tubular manifold with Tial external wastegate routed into downpipe

·         Magnaflow resonator and Tanabe Medalion axleback

·         Replica Greddy front mount intercooler and HKS SSQV

·         Apexi coilovers

·         B&M short shifter

·         99 spec front bumper, turn signals, lip spoiler, taillights

·         Upgraded aluminum door handles

Known Powertrain Issues (prioritized in my opinion)

·         I have had an intermittent issue with the ECU losing power (so engine will stall and not start until resolved). This was my reason for replacing the engine harness, which did not resolve the issue. The issue seemed to be resolved after cleaning the ECU/connector pins but the issue has occurred since. When this has happened it seems to work again after some random pushing/pulling of wires at the ECU connector area but that may be coincidence (have not investigated further as its been hard to willingly reproduce and stay in the problem state)

·         Idle needs help. It behaves as if an idle control valve is closing unexpectedly or the throttle blades aren’t always closing the same way (so the idle can be set but after opening/closing the throttle a few times it will be off again)

·         The tune was done by an AEM EMS tuner but not a rotary expert. The car pulls hard and clean at wide open throttle (in the powerband [dont lug the engine]) but the tune across the board from idle, low load, wide open seems very rich and this car will go through fuel (even for an RX-7)

·         The radiator is held in by some thin brackets. This has not been an issue, just looks like a potential source of failure.

·         Starter sometimes needs to be bumped a few times. So you'll hear a single click but does not turn over. I've never had it not start, but sometimes have to bump the key a few times.

·         I've experienced a 2nd to 3rd gear grind at high RPM. I haven't gauged how frequent this is because I can rarely get to the top of second at wide open throttle.

·         The oil pan leaks (may be other leaks but difficult to see over oil pan and power steering leaks)

Known Steering/Suspension Issues (prioritized in my opinion)

·         Rear suspension bushings are worn, especially in the rear

·         The left front swaybar link is bent

·         Power steering leaks from the pump and possibly elsewhere

·         Boot around steering column shaft in engine compartment is torn

Known Exterior Issues (not prioritized)

·         The wrap is a DIY job and has been patched in a few places mainly around the front bumper and fender openings. The paint underneath is rough. It was heavily oxidized and has since been sanded in large areas and on many panels. There is some DIY body work on minor dents and plugging the rear wiper and washer holes.

·         Crack in right rear quarter panel (I believe this is the biggest body issue aside from paint condition) and there is a small dent on the roof that isn’t super obvious.

·         The front bumper has been repaired (can see blemish in plastic material when wrap is removed) and both front lip pieces have deep scratches.

·         There is a large crack in the windshield and needs to be replaced.

·         Windshield wipers are not usable. The transmission seems to work but the motor is too weak.

·         Door lock cylinders feel loose (my opinion but I dont have another car to compare to)

Known Interior Issues (not prioritized)

·         Headlights must be popped with the headlight up/down button

·         UEGO gauge needs a pod (not mounted)

·         No air conditioning. The compressor, condenser and engine bay lines have been removed

·         Radio does not work and speakers have been removed.

Some Extra Parts I have (to go with the car)

·         OEM wheels (at least 1 bent [but holds air])

·         99 spec replica front bumper with no front license plate mount

·         The original 94 bumper (lip has a crack in it and the paint is rough)

·         The removed Bose speakers including most of the sound tube assembly

·         HKS carbon TI axleback (crack in hanger)

·         Front upper control arms (ball joint boots torn)

·         Some of the removed vaccuum lines, solenoids after removing the twins

·         Misc external gaskets, o-rings (some new in package)

·         At least some of the oil metering lines and injectors (not sure if I have all of it)

·         Any underbody panels I have that are not installed

I've received lots of questions about the ECU issue. To clarify on the frequency, the issue does not happen every time I drive. It tends to be on a drive after I've physically moved the ECU (for example putting it back in its proper mounting position behind the passenger kick panel) and unfortunately it happens without warning. To get the car started again, sometimes it will just start after cycling the key a few times, other times I've unplugged/replugged the ECU and gotten it to start. I've tried troubleshooting this a few times with the engine off while wiggling the wires at the ECU connection but 1) haven't always been able to get it into the problem state and 2) haven't been able to keep it in the problem state. You can tell when the car won't start because the fuel pump will not prime while the issue is happening. So basically, if you don't hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key on, don't bother trying to start it. Per feedback I've received here and elsewhere, I'm dropping the asking price to 28,500 OBO.
