twins vs. single

simple question really, i have a 93 R1 with twins non-seq. i was thinking of going to a single snail. what would you guys recomend for a single and whats the advantages of single over twins and vice versa. my motor is a stage 2 street ported with 3mm apex seals from rx7store.net,

Aaron Cake 12-30-11 09:56 AM

What are your power goals and use for the car?

russellisabel 12-30-11 01:24 PM

street car looking for around 400 to 450hp but lots of trq. good for daily crusing but want to smash evo's when needed.

grid 12-30-11 02:46 PM

Maybe just make the twins to non sequential? Or upgrade to larger twins.

russellisabel 12-30-11 04:18 PM

twins are already non seq. the motor is a stage 2 street ported front mount aftermarket intercooler greedy intake and blowoff all polished, there are pic's on this site of the motor under my name. this is my first fd. im a chevy guy kinda. so i bought this set up with only 2k on the build but after the owner bought all the upgrades racingbeat, down pipe, mid pipe, and exhaust, motor, new turbos, ect..he dropped it into the car put it all together and could'nt find a good rotary mech to tune it.... so the car idled eratic, skipped, so he parked it for 5-6 years untill i found it. i new it had potential and i found a rotary guy so i bought it and we just swaped in a new throttle body played with the apxi power commander, and separate apxi boost controler cpu and she runs good just needs to go on the dyno to clean it up because it hesitates at 4000 thekinda kicks back a little then picks up and is smopoth again. so i have no idea what the #'s are yet, but im running 13lbs..right now untill dyno. i just want this car to be a evo killer. dynotech here has alot of them mostly running 350hp to the wheels. who knows i might even have that after dyno and turnning up my boost... just trying to get some ideas..tunner says everyone else goes single but i kinda like having a twin setup to keep the car value up and i think its just cool factor too..

Thanks for saving a FD and joining the Club! A few suggestions and thoughts!

1) Paragraphs. Please! =)

2) Running over 12psi on stock twins whether sequential or not seems to drastically cut down on their lifespan.

3) Polishing does not effect HP or Torque (Ha,ha! Sorry had to throw that in!)

4) Check out the Single Turbo section for great information on your specific goals that have been covered many times.

5) What does your current fuel setup look like? Injectors? Pump? Etc.

6) See #4. Will be interesting to see how you build her up!

russellisabel 12-30-11 07:07 PM

850 primary & i think 1600 or 1700 secondaries. the twins are new and i think a little bigger have to check. im still learning the car and finding out what's what.

i believe the fuel is a walbro pump with under hood reg & gauge.

just mentioned the polished part cause i think its cool to look at and adds to the good looks of the car.

got some hesitation gremlins at 4000rpm however i found some grounding spots to go back and check as listed on the site. also the battery is relocated to the rear so im going to check every ground recomended by aaroncake.net.

still learning all the quirks and stuff and love the website! info info info! feed me semore! lol!

Did you do the non-seq setup? If so how so you like it compared to the sequential?
I'm sure a single would be fun but make sure you do it right.

gdub29e 12-31-11 09:00 AM

Depends on what your power goals and use of the car will be.

Aaron Cake 12-31-11 10:46 AM

GT35R turbo kit with supporting mods.

russellisabel 01-02-12 11:32 AM

new info!

ok I just did some research and found some of the goodies my fd has.

#1. bnr stage 3 turbos non-seq

#2. nippondenso fuel pump

#3. stage 2 street port motor from rx7store.net

#4.racing beat dual tip exhaust, down pipe, mid pipe, no cat

#5. greddy dual intake, front mount intercooler

#6. apexi fc + comander

#7. 550 primary + 1600 secondary

still needs tunning bad, breaks up at 4000rpm to 5000rpm then rips again.
just wondering what hp and trq #'s i could expect with this config???
if i can get at lest 400hp i'll be a happy and by the way this whole build has about 1600-2000 miles on it.

russellisabel 01-05-12 05:20 PM

ok new update, my primary inj. are 850cc. thank you smg944. found smg944 through this site and met up with him.
seems to me he knows his stuff and owns a fd himself. so i dropped my R1 off at his place in cranston. im having him do some little mods a meth kit and some other goodies and off to the dyno at dez racing. so i should have the little purple porche eater up and dialed in in about 12 days.

thanks goes to this web site for all the info and allowing me to find a fd tunner close to home. ill post the dyno sheets soon. thanks again everyone

BOONJING 01-07-12 01:27 AM

man sounds really good so far!!! please post up dyno numbers when your done, im also a new FD owner and wondering how the twin setup does, im thinking of either staying twin or going single also..lol !!

perf0rmance 01-10-12 02:30 AM

How much did you get it for? If you don't mind that is....

perf0rmance 01-10-12 02:31 AM

Sounds like a stout build btw.

mxkilla450 01-10-12 02:47 AM

a single set up will be less complicated an just a cleaner look im my opinion

Kutrina87 01-10-12 10:37 AM

single setup is a great choice. go gt35r turbo will put you in the power ranger you want

russellisabel 01-12-12 07:56 AM

well i got the fd for $16k, which in my opinion wasnt bad after shopping around ebay and other sites for about 3 months. it has a mint interior, full body kit molded in and the headlight conversion as you can see in my pictures. plus the fact that the car has 0% rust or rot. it was stored its whole life and with the mods and new engine build i think it was a good deal for a rare fd.

the twins vs. single question opened a whole new can of worms. so far i have heard from both sides and they both have their strong points depending on what your going to do with your fd. right now i found out im running a new set of stage 3 bnr's in non seq. mode. look up bnr turbos stage 3 on the net. the idea of this setup is to still have instant boost at lower rpm and also work like a single by running non seq.

bnrsupercars.com

426 RWHP and 365 RWTQ was made at 18 psi of boost!

this is what im looking to come close to as i can with all the mods done and adding a trunk mounted methanol kit this week.

charlie 7 01-13-12 01:16 AM

Low budget stay twins
You want power go single :)

Notorious J 01-14-12 03:24 PM

yes, i have also heard to go single for big power.

russellisabel 01-15-12 11:17 AM

well yes a single will look cleaner, however I feel our cars will retain more value if they are in fact a real twin turbo car as there are few good condition ones left in the usa. I also believe that in a car as light as ours 426 RWHP and 365 RWTQ is more than enough power. very few people have had the chance to ride in a fd that puts down these #'s for real not some gestimate or claim. I own a 2006 chevy avalanche ss thats procharged with meth injection, and about $30k into the drivetrain. the truck puts down 565rwhp on a mustang dyno. it runs 12's at new england dragway. now that said, the truck weighs 6000lbs..so a fd 3400lbs less weight even with 125 less hp will still be a low 11 or 10 sec. car. how many daily driven cars can do that today?

i think there is a certain cool factor to a single, like looks when you open the hood there's a giant snail stareing at you, and it does make the tunning and things simple vs. a twin set up.
im not knocking singles in any way at all, from what im learning here in a short time i do believe as i said before they both have advantages depending on your applacation.

i already have the stage 3 bnr's so im going to see what we get out of her. i will post dyno sheets as i get them and track timeslips however we will have to wait for spring for the track slips.

RX7Zamboni 01-15-12 05:29 PM

try to stay with the twins if u can

Supraman522 01-15-12 09:52 PM

I would go with a Precision Billet 6262!Spool would be super quick

kenneth elias 09-12-12 06:21 PM

changing twin turbos?

hello i was wondering if its possible to have my rx7 to about 500- 600hp my engine is new transmission new my engine is pretty much built for horsepower biggest port straight pipe and i was wondering if i could just swap the stock twin turbos to after market and put them in the same place or do i have to do a whole new set up? I know i have to change my headers injectors and other stuff but how much can stock headers turbo manifold handle?
