not starting
ERRR my cars not running, i know nothing about rx7s except that i got mine really cheap. its not running, it turns over but doesnt start. it has a new battery. the coil pack closest to the windshield doesnt get spark and the coil closest to the bumper gets spark. there was a turbo on it and the previous owner took it out. I have not checked compression yet, ive read some posts on how to check compression so thats the next thing i will do. Can anyone give me some advise on what i should try to get it started. oh the plugs and wires are new too. Ive done the deflooding process and it still wont start and i didnt see any gas on the plugs.

It sounds like you have a basket case of a car, that may have been hacked on.
Can you post a few pictures of the engine bay to give us a clue as to what we are dealing with? How are you testing for spark? If you are using a timing light then that is not a correct test as many timing lights don't trigger reliably on the stock system. The car needs three things to start: fuel, spark, compression. It sounds like you have spark and compression, but may be lacking fuel. Jump the yellow test connector found near/under the airbox on the passenger side shock tower and turn the key to "RUN". Does the fuel pump run? |
I tested for spark with inline ignition tester and it showed i had spark. i just dont know if both coil pack need to get spark durring starting. i have also tried to spray starting fluid in the throtle body and it did not start.

Well for one thing, that's not a turbo car. That's an NA and always has been.
The engine will start on the leading coil pack only, so don't worry about that for now. I bet once the car starts, there will be trailing spark. Start by performing a quick compression test: http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/blown.htm Did you perform the fuel pump check as I asked? |
No I didn't get to that today. For the quick compression test I checked out the link you have me and I am going to do that first thing in the morning and post my rusults!

Ive tried the "deflooding method" myself with no results.
Try having a second person engage/disengage the fuel while you are holding the starter down. Removing the EGI fuse as stated in the deflooding procedure disables spark so its not going to fire while you are doing this as most people have stated in various threads. And even if you get the flooded gas out, as soon as you plug EGI back in its going to start right back up in "Cold start enrichment" and flood itself out again, especcialy on an older engine. So try having someone unplug the fuel pump at the source and leave the EGI fuse in that way it will continue to fire as the mixture leans out and eventually it should "talk" then have them plug the fuel pump back up quickly. try this several times because you need to time it somewhat so the mix gets just right. Id try turning it over with the plugs out and EGI fuse out for a count of ten, put the plugs back in and EGI back in and turn it over and after a second have your buddy disable the fuel pump and keep turning it over and see if it starts then, then you can play with when to reengage the fuel to keep it running. |
ok i jumped the connecter and i did not hear the fuel pump turn on and i did the quick compression test and i did not hear any pause when air came oout of the spark plug holes.

make sure you have power and a ground to the fuel pump. if not you have a bad relay or a wiring problem. If you have power and ground then your fuel pump is bad.
Check all connections - i just bought a fc that wouldnt idle because of a bad connection to the coolant temp sensor. $300 and twenty minutes of my time and I have a running car:) A freind had a GSL-SE that wouldnt run because the tachometer wire was on the wrong coil. Sometimes the simple things are the most difficult to find. Good luck. |
The pump may be very quiet, so disconnect a line and see if fuel squirts out.
If there is no fuel, the first thing to check is the relay under the dash. Also, make sure the fuel pump is plugged in. :) |

the fuel pump it in the hatch area right?? well its plugged in. the rear shock towers have some cut wires and i have no idea what the wires are to (looks like they could have been to speakers maybe) ill take pics tomorrow and post them so you guys know what im talking about. and the line to disconnect is just any of the 2 hoses?

I would pull the hose in the engine bay to avoid spilt fuel inside. If there isnt fuel check the plug to see if it has power. If there is no power check the relay.

When you pull the hose for the love of god wear some eye protection.

Just briefly disconnect the hose at the fuel rail or filter in the engine bay and key on the car with the yellow test connector jumped. You will know immediately if the fuel pump is running.

got my car out of the shop today they put a nedw fuel pump and new trailing coil, it runs rough tho.

it starts easy, idles good and rund rough when driving over 1500 rps

now it wont even crank over!! so annoying!!!

So the engine won't even turn when you try to start it? Check the main battery cables, the starter, and the ignition switch.
The trailing coil was an unnecessary replacement. Even if the coil was bad, the car should have still started and run fine. |
the car started after i cranked the car by hand. i pulled the belt so it turned 3 times and it started, the mechanic that fixed my car said its the started thats bad, he also said my flywheel is going bad which is causing my car to run rough. it idles good and onces its been running for a bit it revs up fairly good just when i drive it it seems like it doesnt have the power it should it kind of stutters if that makes any sence. any ideas? should i not take it to that mechanic again for future repairs ?

Your flywheel is going bad? That's a new one on me.
What exactly is "bad" about the flywheel? Ask your mechanic to be specific and post exactly what he said word for word. As for your power issue, make sure the aux ports are opening. |
