New to Rx7

Hello everyone I just traded my boat for an 91 rx7 what is the first thing I should look for or do to it. I do not know much about them but I am mechanically inclined. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks

welcome to the board. :)

somewhere in there, you should also get a copy of the FSM and a Haynes manual.

Thanx appreciate it also I read that its normal to smoke when it first starts up but how much is to much

diabolical1 06-15-15 09:40 PM

how much are you having?

for an engine with some years behind it, a thin puff of smoke (or a few) might not be abnormal, especially if it/they dissipates quickly.

maerki 06-16-15 06:28 AM

When I first start it it will fill the whole area up with smoke and after it idles down for a few seconds it goes away.

diabolical1 06-16-15 07:50 AM

color?
smell?

maerki 06-16-15 08:34 AM

Dark blue to light blue
Burnt oil smell

diabolical1 06-16-15 08:45 AM

oil seals are your likely scenario. start logging your miles per quart and save for a rebuild.

maerki 06-16-15 09:52 AM

Wonderful well I stared it up this mornin didn't smoke at all it seems like if it sits for a couple days it will do that idk

diabolical1 06-16-15 11:42 AM

you never mentioned that it was sitting for a couple days before you saw the smoke. oil stays in the chambers and it will have the natural tendency to pool because of gravity. that said, it shouldn't really give that strong of a burning oil smell either. so you can (and should) still track oil consumption but, at least for now, forget what i said about saving for a rebuild.

start up

Ok thanx my bad now have another question and like I said I don't know anything about these cars and tryin to figure out the kinks. if its cold it revs up like normal and after I drive it for awhile then turn it off for a couple hours its hard to start back up and I have to pump gas. Sorry for so many questions I have another after this one

diabolical1 06-16-15 05:09 PM

well, the first response to this thread yesterday was Lduley suggesting you tune the car up. definitely start there.

with the difference in starting between hot and cold that you described, it could be a few things. in no particular order: check the compression, pressure test the cooling system, check the ignition coils.

was the car sitting for a while before you got it?

you may as well ask whatever questions you have all at once. some things may be interconnected. also, you have the status of a new member right now, so you might as well use it.

You have been very helpful and I greatly appreciate but I did list the issues in another post thanx again

What's an FSM? Haynes manual is pretty self explanatory.

diabolical1 06-23-15 10:45 AM

FSM = Factory Service Manual

go to Foxed.ca and you can download a copy for free.
