my Tii starts but turns off when u let go of the key HELP!!!
 

hi everyone . i recently got a 1988 turbo 2 that starts but dies when when u let the key go. when i got it the starter was hooked up to a toggle switch. to start it u have to turn the key all the way forward and hit the starter button ( it cranks right up ) but when u let the key go the motor goes through a few revelations then dies out. CAN ANYONE HELP ME !!!!!!!!

With the key in the 'on' position I'd start by checking if the coils etc have power..

Try jumpering the fuel check connector.

my buddy told me it could be the ignition switch

let me specify, after i turn my key all the way forward and hit my starter button the motor will stay running as long as the key is held forward

..and that confuses me.
you got a ignition switch and a Button too?.
Turning the key all the way forward would be the "start position".
Please elaborate.Do you have a aftermarket Start button wired along with the ignition switch?

i have my starter wired into a toggle switch separate from the ignition switch for diagnostic purposes . i wanted to see if the engine would stay running on its own power without the starter turning it, it does, until you cycle the key back from the start position to on position

the engine will stay on without the starter running it as long as the key is in the start position

With the key in the on position the IG1 fuses which are engine operational related have voltage. So the Main Relay would be one component that has voltage on the B/W wire in the "two wire" relay plug w/key to on. Does yours?

i put a new ignition switch in today and nothing changed , ill check that wire in the morning.

Can you wire it back to stock ignition.NO Push button?
To me anyways, it sounds like the Relay is sticking.

i wired the ignition back to stock . i checked the b/w wire comming out of the main relay for voltage with the ignition switch in the "on" position and there was no voltage. can i use a jumper wire to bypass the relay to check it

If the B/W wire in the "two wire relay plug" does not have voltage w/key to on then you might want to check the 15 amp Engine fuse.

would that fuse be in the box to the left of the clutch pedal, if so , all of my 15a's are good

Yes it is in that fuse box. The B/W wire in question is powered by that fuse so you should double check that fuse using a multimeter if you haven't already. Also, the fuse itself is powered by the Ignition Switch and more specifically the B/W wire found in a two wire Front Harness plug connected to the Ignition Switch pigtail which also houses a Black wire in the same two wire plug. The B/W wire has voltage w/key to start and key to on.

the engine fuze is getting 9.6v . the b/w wire isnt getting power in the on position or the start position

Something is obviously wrong if the relay B/W wire isn't getting voltage but the fuse that powers it is! The B/W wire at the back of the alternator is powered by the same fuse (Engine fuse). Thus that wire too should also have battery voltage w/key to on.

the b/w wire in the ignition switch is getting 12v in the on position

You still need to see how the B/W wire at the alternator is behaving.

And did you do a continuity test on the Engine fuse?

the b/w alternator wire has 12v in the on position. i did a continuity test , the fuze is good

id just order a new ignition

Then the problem lies within the B/W wire that runs to the two wire relay plug. As this wire leaves the Engine fuse it splits off in different directions. Where the wire splits off to the relay must be problematic. Are you measuring the B/W wire with the two wire plug disconnected from the relay w/key to on? And you're definitely measuring for voltage on the B/W wire in the two wire relay plug and not the four wire relay plug?
