lsd diff

i just got a fd and it has a lsd rearend.. i would like to put a stock one back. what is the stock diff and how do i get one? thanks

RotaryRocket88 09-24-12 11:48 PM

That IS the stock diff. All FDs have a torsion limited slip rear end.

jonnyb07 09-25-12 08:03 AM

does it supposed to feel like the wheels are locking up when you turn sharp?

jonnyb07 09-25-12 08:06 AM

will that diff be alright with a ls1 swap?

MazdaMike02 09-25-12 08:16 AM

It's a Torsen LSD not Torsion. And it can handle more than enough.

jonnyb07 09-25-12 08:28 AM

Not wanting to race. Didn't know if it was good to use as a everyday driver. Are the wheels supposed to lock up when turning sharp?

MazdaMike02 09-25-12 12:04 PM

Torsen means torque sensing, locks up based on torque input. No the wheels will not just lock when turning, depends on the torque.

jonnyb07 09-25-12 07:20 PM

When I turn sharp even going slow the back wheels just feel like they are locking until I straighten out. The guy I got it from said it was the lsd

mdavidson101 09-27-12 07:03 AM

It sounds like mud truck I had, welded rear end. If you turn sharp at slow speed do the tires chirp or skid?

jonnyb07 09-27-12 07:49 PM

yes it does

jonnyb07 09-29-12 09:54 AM

what can i do to fix this?

andrewhake 09-29-12 06:44 PM

It sounds like the diff might be welded.

beanis05 09-29-12 07:01 PM

what he said

why would anyone weld a lsd diff???

jonnyb07 09-29-12 10:46 PM

Can it be undone or get new diff?

Schnuh330 09-29-12 11:07 PM

You'd have to open the diff housing to see if it was welded. If it is, which just seems stupid, there is no fix except replacing it. I have heard of other lsd's being damaged, locking up too easily, or just staying locked all the time, but I'm not really familiar with the ones in the fd. I've seen on other cars some lsd's break and be locked up and others break and don't lock up at all or they really break and the car doesn't move at all. Depends on the circumstances of how they break and where any chunks get stuck how they act once they're broken. A dsm guy I know was driving his GSX Eclipse on the freeway when his center diff(which along with the transfer case had been recalled) broke at about 65mph and froze all 4 wheels. He got lucky and managed to not hit anything but his boxers were ruined and all 4 tires had flat spots about 8" long that went all the way to the belts. A guy with a 4wd truck used his winch to pull the car off to the roadside until a flatbed could come.

Wow! Scary! It seems fine until i turn sharp. Feels like it is grabbing but going straight no problem. I will open up to see if some goof welded it.

The Torsen differentials are totally different than any other. There is multiple sets of gears around the carrier. If someone welded them I would advise inspecting the entire car for other horrible mods and half assed jobs.

Does the fc come stock with Lsd?

this +1 x 5,000,000.

Well most limited slip diffs have a torque ratio of around 3.5:1 to 4.0:1 IIRC so it might just be that your "sharp" turns are hitting that ratio. A welded diff will chirp your tires whether it's a sharp turn or soft; doesn't matter because the diff's always locked. A torsen LSD will lock at a predetermined torquing ratio, which might just mean you either need to (a) take your sharp turns a little less sharp, or (b) accept a little squeal as part of the deal.

Hope you get it figured out one way or another.

thanks everyone

that car was probably drifted alot with a welded rearend, and it will be hard not to slide I bet. I would definately get an LSD.

Devaney_M 11-23-12 04:28 PM

WHY, Because DRIFTCAR!!!

87'ls1FC 12-24-12 10:15 AM

Hey, I just shattered my stock 87' non turbo diff which is an open diff 4.33's. My 88' turbo II diff LSD 3.90's holds the power of my ls1. I'm currently putting down 376hp to the wheels. So yeah I'm gonna say the diff in your car Gould hold up just fine.
