Gearbox oil change

I figured this would belong in the new member... But I went to do my trans oil and I took off the filler cap first and a lot of oil came out. I'm thinking it is because I only have the front end jacked up. Am I missing something? Or can I jack the rear up and it will hold 2.6 quarts? Ive double checked the WS manual and pictures online, it is definitely the filler cap. Thanks, I'm pretty sure leveling the car will work, but my friend said he thought you had to pump fluid in with a machine and quickly plug it with the cap...

try this: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...ar-oil-167630/

you'll see an example of the pump in Aaron's link to his page. it can be done without a pump, but it's your choice.

Yup, you are missing "Caution - Park the vehicle on level ground."

and

"...add the specified oil through the filler plug port until the level rises to the bottom of the port."

actually, thanks for pointing that out Evil Aviator, because i had intended to post "STATE YOUR CAR," before posting the link and my reply. i got distracted in the time it took for me to get a link and return. i can be air-headed at times. sue me.

it takes time to search for links and organize responses in a meaningful (and hopefully helpful) way. the onus of providing a helpful detail, like what car you have (or are working on) should be on the poster. actually, Styx made a sticky just for that. you can put it in the title, your signature or the body of the post.

(by the way, i'm sure you know this isn't directed at you, Evil, but just in case you don't, it's not :))

on that note, i deliberately posted the Gen II thread because it basically covered all bases since there were cars with both Type M and Type R trannies. i figured the details couldn't wildly vary when it all came down to it and we saw which generation Rx-7 he has.

^ This. However, I didn't want the OP to get confused by some of the pictures and information on Aaron's website.

It can't be directed at me because the abomination in my garage can only be described as a Frankenseven. :D

The OP's profile lists FD. In the event it's a little different from the FC in the link, the FD has TWO drain plugs (B & C) and ONE fill plug (A)...see below. I recommend he get it level, make sure the fill plug comes out and then drain from BOTH. And absolutely recommend he gets an inexpensive pump, especially if he's using synthetic gear oil which smells like I imagine Roseanne Barr's ass would smell like. A little Teflon tape on the plug threads can't hurt and don't go crazy tightening them. Snug is usually plenty. I've seen plugs practically drilled through the casing.
If the OP really likes to gain something, pull the shifter from above and re-grease the ball and lower bushing per the FSM before re-submerging it in what should be a full reservoir of gear oil. Note that this reservoir is separate from the rest of the transmission.
