That girl seems happy!

MeFryRice 01-02-13 10:16 PM

Welcome and congrats on the new toy!

Whitetiger777 01-02-13 11:39 PM

Still has working AC, Power Steering, and cruise control

Sgtblue 01-03-13 05:32 AM

Congratulations.
Looks like it might have been sitting a while. Now get that Factory Service Manual and study up. Great time to go through it for a baseline for maintenance and learn about the car in the process. Change out all the fluids, some good fuel system cleaner, fuel filter, new plugs etc. And you can still tear-up the roads in between.

I'm with the others on the wheels.

Whitetiger777 01-03-13 09:06 AM

Taking it down to Tri-Point (a rotary shop) today to have everything checked out.

None of the maintanence I mentioned above is all that different from any other car or particularly unique to a rotary. Certainly nothing that requires a rotary specialty shop. If you can do it on Honda, you can do it on the FD.

Whitetiger777 01-03-13 11:37 AM

True, but its for piece of mind to have a rotary specialist go over the car and call attention to anything that might become a problem. Especially when the car was modded by someone else.

wthdidusay82 01-03-13 06:41 PM

If it starts up fine , has good oil pressure, runs without overheating, smoking, or hesitating, everything should be good.

The main concern would be the cars tune, you'll want to know its running the right air/fuel ratio and not running lean.

Rotary >Pistons

Whitetiger777 01-03-13 06:57 PM

Well, they found 5th gear syncro is going out, engine compression was 110, bump stops are dead, rear pillow mounds are going dead, they found a oil level sensor wire disconnected, fixed the display on the power FC, found a hose popped off in the turbo system and ordered up a AEM Failsafe gauge. All in all, I have a more sound mind when I drive it not wondering if the engine is going to nuke.

5th Gear synchro in the early production models was a known weakness. Supposedly MAZDA ungraded it in subsequent models with a stiffer shift-select spindle. I dealt with it years ago myself. Pillowballs are also common...and noisey. IMHO, if you replace any, replace them all. I think there are six in the rear suspension.

Think I'm going to remove the meth injection though. Don't think I'll ever use it.

I realize the car is new to you and you've got a learning curve and other things to deal with. But before removing it, I recommend you take some time and read thru the stickys in the Auxillary Injection Section. Howard Coleman, a big brain here, wrote most of them. Just be sure to understand it's advantages.
You don't HAVE to run meth. I run a simple (distilled) water-only boost activated system on my car. Car runs cooler, reduces knock values and I don't worry about carbon even though I pre-mix AND run the stock OMP. I don't tune to it, it's just for reliability/safety.
My .02, I'll shut up now. Have fun with the car. That's good compression and looks like a solid car.

Whitetiger777 01-04-13 11:21 AM

Given I believe the car is tuned with it I don't think I'll pull the meth off until I get it on a dyno and see whats going on. The system seems to be giving errors though and I believe it's effecting my everyday performance. We'll see what happens though.

Just out of curiosity how much did it cost you to fix your 5th gear?

Years ago. Bought the synchro and shift-select spindle. A friend and I did ourselves. It wasn't much for parts, but labor would be expensive if you have it done.
THIS IS NOT MY WRITE UP. I simply saved this for other people so DON'T contact me about the tools
^From the stickys. Mine was broken almost exactly like that picture.

+1 very wise words .

Sgtblue 01-10-13 07:21 AM

^FWIW....stock tire size for the OEM wheel was 225 50 16. For years I ran 245 45 16...a wider tire that fit on the stock 8" wheel fine and kept the speedometer correct. Unfortunately no one is making 245 45 16 street tires anymore. Obsolete size that's only offered in 'R' compounds. So you have to go back to the narrower 225s or move to a larger 17" or 18" wheel.

Whitetiger777 01-13-13 01:20 PM

About 127k on the odometer, and I just bought some stock rims with Dunlop tires on them. Unfortunately the tires are 12 years old so apparently I can't use them

Whitetiger777 01-14-13 01:28 AM

First Mod done. AEM AF/Boost Failsafe Gauge

S4 Vert 01-14-13 02:28 AM

Nice!! Super clean too! Congratualtions!

PNWFC 01-14-13 10:40 AM

Sweet ride! its nice to find cars that were properly modded from yesteryear, the wheels are period correct... lol but i love it overall. Good find and good luck!

cocofc3s 01-14-13 11:40 AM

Congrats that is a beauty. Love that color engine bay looks great. May you enjoy for many many years!!!

sweet.

i'm not usually into sporty mcsport two door coupes (wags, sedans etc more my taste) but this shape is the epitome (and pinnacle) of mazda styling.

swooping curves, big hips, ideal size & weight... pure mazda sports car style.

i love 'em.

i reckon as the years pass the fd's 'classic mazda' status will only grow and they'll become even more highly sought after.

now, otoh, the wheels...

I would if he wasn't so far a way. Tri-point is around the corner, I think rotary power is about an hour away. So I'm not sure how I'd get back or pick up the car when it was done.

shift 7 01-19-13 09:03 PM

Stewfc 01-20-13 11:03 AM

fisherrx7 01-22-13 11:50 AM

Thats definitely one of the cleanest stock FD's I've seen in awhle.
Keep her going!

Whitetiger777 01-22-13 01:09 PM

I wouldn't necessarily call it stock, but yes the body is in great condition. I do plan on doing the 99 conversion on the exterior.

Definitely on the agenda, but I have to take care of the 5th gear syncro on the pillow bushings first.

04G35S 01-22-13 03:50 PM

Nice buy! Now i just need to find one that clean.... minus the wheels! :-)
Good thing you bought OEM ones already for it!

Whitetiger777 01-22-13 05:21 PM

Ya, but the tires are made in 01, so I'm going to have to wait to put them on. I just had to drop a lot of money on the transmission.

soley_seven 01-22-13 07:30 PM

still got them wheels by chance?

Whitetiger777 01-22-13 07:53 PM

Yes I do.

Whitetiger777 01-23-13 11:35 PM

New mods just in:

Rebuilt Transmission

ACT Heavy Duty Clutch

dream3rdgen 01-24-13 07:55 AM

Grats man looks awesome!

revhard510 01-25-13 12:09 PM

Man nice ride. Did you get it for a good price.? Already souped up

Whitetiger777 01-25-13 05:37 PM

I think I got a good price, not a smoking good price, but a good price. The car was already modded when I got it, but I have a few changes I'll be making.

Nick_Copernicus 01-25-13 09:13 PM

That's a clean RX-7 man take care of her.

Whitetiger777 01-25-13 09:30 PM

Pretty clean. I already had to rebuilt the trans and replace the clutch. Next on the agenda is the pillow bushings, then everything else is fun stuff.

fdlover1994 01-25-13 10:18 PM

Nice looks pretty clean ive been looking for a fd for awhile not luck so far ):

Whitetiger777 01-25-13 10:36 PM

Ya, it took me about 3 months or so. There was a beautiful silver touring in VA on the for sale section of these forums.

dungle22585 01-27-13 11:21 PM

Awesome.

mr_smartman 01-28-13 01:08 PM

dam, the car looks soooo clean, wish the same can be said for cars in my area

Whitetiger777 01-28-13 02:47 PM

Just keep looking. Like I said I saw 3 months of FD's that were beat up in some way shape or form. By the time I came across this one I was so tired of looking at beat up cars I bought it.

Durka 01-28-13 11:47 PM

Congrats on the purchase, nice looking ride!

hectik1 01-29-13 12:33 AM

Nice FD. Not a fan of chrome, but I am liking those wheels.

Whitetiger777 01-30-13 08:20 PM

Yup, got it off a dealer lot.

Whitetiger777 01-31-13 01:48 AM

Yup, Montego Blue
