But why slicks with R compound rubber in the snow and ice?

I try to drive the RX-8 once a week to keep the battery and everything up.

I live right on the coast where the weather is very moderate so I am lazy and my race cars live on race tires.

I had to drive back from a friends house around 3am when it dipped below freezing and there was snow on the ground.
I just drove 10-35mph on the freeway trying to stay in the ruts of other cars tires.

Worked nice, the car just wove back and forth a bit with the steering wheel held straight and the DSC light blinking. Luckily there were no hills to try to go up or off camber turns to slide off of. Just flat freeway with a couple gentle curves.

I have found DOT-Rs aren't really any worse than summer tires in the snow/ice if they have tread.

These were slicks (sold with no tread) which really are that bad!

Hell, on slicks I have gotten so stuck on wet grass with slicks before I have had to be towed back to the pavement.

Other times I have spun them on long, dead, wet grass enough to heat them up and get the grass to stick.
If the grass is short and living this doesn't work as if you spin the tires up you just work down to mud.

Be careful where you park when on slicks.

But amazingly I have also driven over some pretty good sand dunes by keeping the speed up.

Info

I am in the second lhase of my build(paint). I have ohlins coilovers and they are great but the suspension still feels sloppy. Reading this thread is helping. Trying to understand that mechanical safety mazda put in the suspension. Dont know if i want it or not.
