fc overboosting problem

I have a series 4 with a series 5 engine. I bought the car like this. Everytime i get on the throttle hard the boost guage reads around 14 psi. It has a night sport fcd. I looked near the turbo and it looks like the wastegate actuator rod is bent. Could this be my problem? I think the wastegate rod being bent would keep it open not closed? any help?

The car only does this at full throttle. And i looked up the fcd and it says that model stops the fuel cut and raises the boost.

I think the wastegate actuator rods come like that.

Is the wastegate ported??

Im not sure. I thought the series 5 wastegates didnt have boost creep problems.

S5 will still have issues, specifically if some exhaust work has been done.

If you have an aftermarket exhaust, you should port the wastegate.

I do so its probably because of that. But is their anyway possible to check if the wastegate is functioning properly just in case

You'd have to pull the turbo to check

jish776 01-16-12 10:14 PM

Thanks for your help im going to try and get the turbo apart tommorow and see what the owner before me has done to it.

If you're wanting to be sure the wastegate is closed, and see if it is ported, you can just remove the downpipe and back plate while it is still on the car. Use a flashlight... Check the wastegate actuator movement by hand and look for signs of porting.

Alright thanks can i ceck the shaft play like that also?

jish776 01-17-12 08:03 AM

I take the intake side off for that right

Yes, you can check for shaft play that way. You may want to check it in the back, too... Since you may open that up to check the wastegate opening/ flapper anyway.

You can disconnect the arm that connects the actuator to the flapper. It's held on by a c-clip on the flapper side of the arm. This will leave the wastegate open and limit boost as much as it is physically capable of doing. However, your problem sounds like classis non-ported wastegate + open exhaust situation.

Alright cool. That was my first thought then i read it wasnt a big deal with the s5 wg. But i do have a full exhaust and intake and (supposedly) its ported. I still havent checked yet

^street ported. Not wg ported
