Cold air intake help
 

For those who read my last post I did figure out my coolant system problem. Now I'm planning on putting in a cold air intake into my non-turbo 86. What brand should I get and how should I go about doing this?

i have an 86 na gxl, and i haven't found any company that makes a cold air intake. hks and k&n make filters and adapters, but thats all it is for about 200.00 dollars. corksport makes a new intake pipe, but its not a cold air intake. if you find one, post it, let me know.

i was thinking about 2 different options

1. building my own out of pipe, and running it somewhere to get cool air, and adapting it the the maf sensor.

2. getting an hks or k&n filter and building a box around it, then putting a scoop on the hood right above it, so that when the hood is closed, the air intake will be isolated from everything around it except the air coming in from the hood scoop.

Without a divider or box of some sort, an aftermarket intake will just suck HOT air. To do it properly, you really need to make a custom box. I have a thread on it here: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/diy-cold-air-box-830116/

Also, the stock intake is more than enough for an NA. You won't see any power gains by swapping to a cone filter, so unless you're doing it for looks, don't bother. You can use a K&N drop in filter if you really want to.

you dont think putting a hood scoop behind the left headlight and building a box around the filter, would get any gains? the way im thinking about it is, is that a lot more cool air would come in that way then right under the hood like the stock intake...

The stock snorkel draws up air from the openings in the bumper. It just takes an indirect path up past the passenger side headlight, then into the area in front of the radiator. The trip up there isn't going to heat the air up any more than when it's outside the car. Any possible gain you might see will be too small to measure on a dyno. Mazda did a good job with the stock NA intake, so you can't expect to get amazing results replacing it like you might find on other cars. The turbo models on the other hand suffer from a horrible turbo inlet duct that is a well known restriction, but that's another story.
