Best exhaust solution?
 

I've been scouring all over the internet and rx7club for the EASIEST solution for replacing the stock exhaust on my 88 FC, besides taking it to get it done in a shop. My state doesn't require any emissions, so all the cats and any other un needed parts are good to go. I've read the emissions delete thread and I plan on keeping my air pump. I want to get a cat-back kit, and then grab a straight pipe to put where the cat was, is that a good idea? Any header/manifold back kits around?

Are we talking n/a or turbo?

Either way the EASIEST and BEST (but not the cheapest) is to get a racing beat system from the cats back

Don't straight pipe it unless you and you neighbors love the sound of obnoxiously loud bees getting it on

N/A. I live pretty much in the middle of a corn field, and my only neighbor has a crazy loud Cummins and a (pretty sure) zero exhaust MK3 Supra. We love each other sarcasm

Aren't the 6port on 88 are activated by the exhaust...?

I know of some people wired them electronically

Anyway, the air pump might be of no use depending on the exhaust system your going with

RB! it's expensive, but if you plan to keep the car it will probably be one of your best investments. any particular reason you're keeping the air pump?

Bye bye airpump then. I thought the 5/6th ports were opened by it on all FCs. Would grabbing the RB headers be a worthwhile investment while I'm doing exhaust?

the S4 cars open the auxiliary ports with exhaust pressure. the S5 cars use the air pump.

for what it's worth, i think you might as well get the header with the exhaust. some may agree. other may not.

You can wire them electrically , the conversion is quite cheap , some time on your end , but nothing crazy .

Or you can leave them open
IIRC you lose bottom power and gain some in top end , but all that isn't really noticeable.

I believe that a big numbers of FC's have them seized,I met few anyways.

Back to the exhaust , if one day I drive a NA again,I wouldn't go straight pipe, even headers...I mean sh*t it's loud, I felt bad starting the car early morning and late at night.

I would concentrate on a nice Silencer/Cat of some sort, exhaust wise.

But taste,goal & environment is different for everybody .

You can put a Header and presilencer on (Rb has a tube that will supply air to the Port actuators)
Presilencer for 86-88 RX-7 Non-turbo - Auto Trans - Racing Beat

OR get creative and expand the Pipe after the collector on the header.If you look at where the Presilencer goes,you can make the pipe after the Header bigger there,and then Reduce the pipe again.Add a Tube for the Actuators and you are good to go.
OR..again..you can add a tube AT the Collector(where the 2 pipes meet IN the Header) and that is where you would place a tube to supply air to the actuators.

If you go "electric port actuation" then it gets involved with RPM Switches and Do-Dads..

just for clarity, header and unbelievably loud are not synonymous. straight pipe without a header is obnoxious, but with a header, i agree it's bloody ridiculous.

that said, RB systems are notoriously civil. my only hesitation for using the word "quiet" here is because it's subjective. also, i'm using RB as the example because it is still (in my opinion) the measuring stick for available, mass-produced systems. however, you can have quiet car and a header if you choose the right parts and i would tend to think you wouldn't be giving up too much in terms of flow to do it either. streetable is usually an automatic compromise.

Just buy an ebay cat back and then do a custom pipe from the headers to the catback. Cheapest way

If running headers a presilencer of some sort is a must. I have what is essentially those cheap ebay cans for mufflers right now with a presilencer and it is loud. See this thread:

I can't imagine how loud one of those 3" singles on Ebay would be on a n/a without a presilencer. Racing Beat is the best off the shelf option if you have the coin.

I have an 88 vert that is streetported. I have a Mind Train header (unbelievably loud).
To get it to an acceptable (not exactly quiet) level. I ended up adding a Racing Beat presilencer and dual RB turbo exhaust. It is now pretty civil, but not quiet.
With the old system it would set off car alarms in parking garages. :)
