auto transmission problems

when i fire up my car and try to put it in gear it wont move. i tried all the gears and nothing. it wont even make a sound. i know its going in gear cause when i shift it in to park the car wont move. could it be a bad torque converter?

Sounds like you need a five speed swap...

when u put it into park, it has a locking mechanism that keeps it from moving. has nothing to do with being in gear. if nothing happens when selecting drive or reverse with the engine running, first thing is to make sure the fluid level is full. filter may be clogged. quite possible the pump is bad. any number of things could be wrong. some shops will diagnose at no charge. but u'd have to tow it there. probably first thing they'd do is check line pressure.

Just be careful with what they tell you. Not many people are turning away business right now, so if you walk in and say "does my transmission need a rebuild" chances are they will tell you yes. I just went through this with my father, and saved him 3 grand when I discovered that he just needed a relay on his van, rather than a full rebuild like the shop told him. Just be very careful.

Good luck.

i think ill just take the transmission out and take it to them. would that work? or would they need it to be in the car?

unless they're going to rebuilt it testing would be done in th car, with the tranny ECU hooked up and everything. to measure line pressure they would need the engine running.

like he said check your fluid level engine running of course but let me add on now put the car in drive put up ur e brake and step on the brake hard. now floor the gas pedal for 7 seconds or until it stops at a certain rpm (this is called a stall test and i do it often) if the engine keeps reving to red line stop and shift into reverse and see if it does the same. if it does you have a bad torque converter. if the rpms stop and stay at a steady rpm then mark down where your rpms stopped example. 1800 now shift the car into revese and do the same. the rpms should be the same as in when the car is in drive and in reverse my example 1800.

its most likely the filter... they can be tricky to fit up in there right after you change your atf. i did it myself and now my auto tranny sucks but oh well i planned on getting a five speed right when i got it cuz they kick *** performance wise compared to the autos and they are a lot more fun. so if anyone wants to give me a five speed tranny....

when i start the car and the transmission starts pumping oil threw its self does it pump oil in to the torque converter or when you put a converter in and fill it with oil does that oil just stay in it and keep it lubbed?

do you have to fill the torque converter with fluid before putting it in or do you just put it in and the transmission pumps it full

If it has no fluid, it will go nowhere. Have you checked the fluid level? That should have been the first thing you did...

i was sure the link i posted would answer that question the first time u asked it. but yes, and if the TC is empty, u have to put fluid in it before installing it onto the trans. otherwise it wont work the pump. go back to my link and check the internal workings of the TC. and other links on that site for how an auto works. it has to have fluid in it from the get go. when doing a fluid and filter change, it's refilled with 4-5 qts, but it actually holds much more than that.

yes fill the torque converter where it wont run out of it where you can put it on the tranny and it not spill. once you start the engine it will fill it up the rest of the way. when you shut it off again it will drain back to the pan until the torque converter is to the halfway full

if the transmission has no fluid in it will it not move or apply any of the clutch pack or band for that matter for the simple fact that it is only pumping air thought the system. just like your brake, they will not work of air pressure it need the fluid in it to create the correct amount of pressure for it to engage.

i have the original transmission that he took out. and the only reason he took it out. is cause he thought he was dale jr. and was trying to shift it like a manual. and it wouldnt go down in to first gear. so he took it out and bought this one. put it in drove 10 miles stopped at a stop light. then it wouldnt move it would shift threw all gears in drive. it just wouldnt pull down in to first. so he bought the used one that im messing with now. should i just put the original one back in. and quit messing with this piece of junk?
