Hey all, have a interesting issue my 1984 FB came with a aftermarket sunroof not a big deal but the issue is that it leaks like crazy directly into your lap and to add insult to injury someone calked it into its housing, i want to restore it back to its usable condition but i dont know what brand it is. if anyone has any kind of information i would love to hear it, any lead is better then none
inside view, sunroof aftermarket top view, outside OEM sun roof vs the aftermarket sized sunroof
Leaking was a common problem with the aftermarket roofs. I'd inspect the glass for any brand markings, however even if you can identify it, I highly doubt they are still in business. The factory chassis tops were completely different with a recessed lip to accommodate the oem roof.
You best bet would be to remove the whole thing and start over, re-sealing it. You can probably find a generic rubber seal in bulk, with a similar cross section to what was used, if you want to replace the one there now.
thats my thought as its some Auto-Zone special thing that sold 4 whole units, my plan is to peel that sunroof off and try and redo it, sucks when i have to wash it since the seat gets soaked, hoping it fixes the whole thing thankyou for the rubber seal idea
I have a 86 Sport with the coveted after market value destroyer, too.
Webasto manufactured a metric-assload of sunroofs during the 70s and are still in business today. I was lucky enough to have a sticker with a model name "Hollandier"(?).
Of course I couldn’t find parts or repair manuals so it’s been trial and error getting it to work properly.
You might check them out. Hope this helps.
did some digging on webasto roofs and some models or versions look REALLY close to mine, thankyou so so much, i do think i can track something down with this possibly will have a sticker on the inside of the glass seat of its Manufacturer and model when i eventually pull the glass to reseal it but ill keep digging for info, thankyou!
It's unlikely the company, if they're still even in business will have parts for a 40 year old sunroof. You will likely have to just get creative, either swelling and reconditioning the old original seals or finding some generic seal material to replace it with.
You could try taking the seal off and soaking it in simple green for a day or 2, wintergreen oil and alcohol mixtures work well too but a little harder to find wintergreen oil locally.
