Suggestions on Heating garage for Winter
 

How do you guys heat your garage now that it is getting colder?

I was thinking about getting a Reddy heater that uses Kerosene but hear its not recommended for an enclosed area.

I need to heat a 1.5 car garage, I do not have gas in my area, we use oil heat.

Any recommendations? What do you guys use?

Electric heaters on a timer?

I use a kerosene heater this one is suppose to go in your house it dont put out fumes, smoke or anything it works great and we also have 2 in our house and i havent died or got sick been using them through about 3 winters

i picked up one of those kerosen heaters at lowes for pretty cheap. Does get the garage smokin hot, but defiantly warmer. Then just wear a sweat shirt, and long pants, done.

I have propane heat in my home shop but that's pretty much over kill for a small garage. My old man uses kerosene heaters and they seem to work pretty good.

The forced air propane (tube heaters) work well for around 100 bux, I myself have a 220v electric heater that hangs from the rafters, but I only turn it on to nock off the chill. Like everyone said sweat shirt and jeans you’ll be fine. How much you looking to spend? They even have small radiant propane heaters @ depot for 40$.

The highest-powered electric heaters that run on normal house current are 1500 watts I think... totally worthless.... don't bother.

I have a torpedo-type kerosene heater that pumps out something like 60,000 btu and it works great, although you should really vent the air by opening the garage door a few inches. I also run a carbon monoxide detector in the garage just to be extra safe.

OH yeah..... one more thing. If you do a lot of work under the car crawling around on your back... you can heat it all day long, but that lower 8 inches right by the concrete floor will still be freezing cold. Hot air rises, ya know?

My cold weather outfit is something like:

1 T-Shirt + 1 long sleeve + 1 button-down shirt that I can wipe dirty hands on

2 pairs of jeans

2 pairs of socks

You can work in some seriously cold temps with that gear as long as you take breaks to let your hands and toes warm up from time to time.

It's super cold here in the UK a the moment and the concrete floor is my worse nightmare come true. I now wear thermal leggings with a pair of combats over the top, 1 t-shirt, 1 polo shirt, 1 jumper and a fleece over the top. I feel like the michelin man going into the garage, lol.

dont use the readt heater or whatever the hell it is!!! use a pellet stove!! there freakin awesome. they put out tons of heat just like a wood stove but are so much easier to take care of. plus they can heat just as quick as a ready heater if not better. although the pellets during the winter sky rocket in price. if you get them early in the summer you can get them cheap.

My pop uses a kerosene in his garage. Works pretty well, no fumes, no smell at really. It's not like you can sit around in shorts and a t-shirt, but it is nice. Actually used it at FD3Boost's pops once, and it worked really well!

Rotary exhaust is pretty warm. Just start the car up in the garage. You'll be feelin' fine in no time. :bigthumb: ;)

Whoever said pellet stove is pretty good idea, but that requires ducting, buying pellet's by the ton(better buy), and the stove's themselves are a pretty penny. I would only get something like that if I were in there every day and night working. Good idea though!

thanks, there not actually that expensive. i picked a used one up for 100, it's like brand new. the pellets can go for as little as 130 in the summer and if your not in the garage that much it will last all winter. and the ducting is also cheap. i paid 30 for the double wall piping needed for it. there very nice for a quick heat source.

This is a great idea, I am gonna look into this. I started checking around and it the stoves are pretty expensive. If you find one for a good deal let me know.

If you want good deals look in your local papers classifieds. You ALWAYS find steals in there. I spoke from experience from what my folks have. Both are about 2500 bucks a piece, but you can throw about 300 pounds of pellets in them and it will run for about 4 days straight and heat up about 1100 sq. ft.

You could also look into those bullet heaters. Used to have them in a shop where I worked at when I was doing construction. They put off about 10,000+btu's. Pretty friggin hot. I remember melting my pants one time. It never heated the shop though, and the shop was HUGE, but would work perfectly in a garage.

insulation helps, even as simple as plastic on all the walls.

no problem, just keep in mind the size of your garage so when they list the amonut of space they will heay you wont go so big that its gonna cost 1,000 for a used pellet stove. i use one for my cellar and in about 1/2 an hour its warm when the setting is on 2 out of 10. they blow the heat just like a ready heater. best thing to do is check your local paper for people upgrading theres. thats how i got mine! just be careful if you need pellets during winter. i think there around 190 a ton here at the moment, but in the summer i can get them for 130.
