PFS not tunning anymore?

I just spoke with the receptionist for PFS and she told me that they aren't tunning rx7's anymore that they didn't install the engine in. Has anyone heard of this?

RXtacy 08-28-07 02:02 PM

Which PFS did you call? If you called the showroom in Manassas that is correct they no longer work on cars there. PFS in frederick MD with ray does the mechanic work and tuning. 301-874-0611

jsplit 08-28-07 02:46 PM

If that's what Kelly told ya - then it's probably correct ;p
Ray was debating on that a while ago I know so maybe he decided to do it.
Kinda makes sense from his perspective, why take the blame if something goes wrong when you have no idea if whoever built / installed the motor did it properly.

Agreed, i was told the same thing about a month back. It is too big of a liability for him. It sucks but is understandable.

I'd heard they were requiring a compression test, which makes sense, and so would a "systems check" fee to establish that things are functioning... if it's only if they built the motor, that would be unfortunate.

However, so mny of these cars are put together poorly, or people don't want to spend the money to do things right before they throw it on the dyno, I'm not surprised.

The Fall Brawl 08-28-07 03:57 PM

I told you that you should let Ray do the work Josh. I hope your able to get it worked out.

twin7r1 08-28-07 07:15 PM

well i dont mind having to pay the extra fee of having it tested to have it tuned.... but im not really trying to tune the car by myself.

Thanks

No offense, but it's EXCELLENT news. All too often, ppl are only looking at things from one perspective. Being that I've helped put on a few Steve Kan tuning sessions, I can tell you MANY a time I looked at him and said, "You're going to tune THAT?" And I meant it. MANY a time there are cars that are practically slopped together by self-proclaimed mechanics, with very little know-how and lots of enthusiasm. It's usually a mess, and that's not mentioning that it's often slapped together at the last minute too.

I think it's TOTALLY unfair for the tuners to have to carry ALL the burden for tuning (excuse my french) setups that are total CRAP, and then when it blows, ppl say "Oh so and so blew my motor while tuning." That's directly impacting that tuner's ability to make a living, when he's at no fault of his own! A tuner's rep is EVERYTHING.

Thankfully, after much nagging, I've seen Steve actually turn ppl away, refusing to tune 'em until they had the plethora of issues he's diagnosed on-scene addressed. And I'm STILL pushing him now to require EVERY car that comes to get tuned to have a full performance inspection by a well-known rotary shop, in writing, on company letterhead, PRIOR to being tuned. And even then, there's only so much you can find out - short of spending 5+ hours trying to backtrack someone else's work... and you're still bound to miss stuff... AND that's assuming the engine wasn't home-made and wasn't put together incorrectly either.

Bottom line is, while no one is against saving money, ppl need to understand that professionals make the big $$ not because they can do what you can't; it's because they do what you don't KNOW about, simply because of YEARS of experience of doing the same thing. And it's often the subtle things here and there that you miss in your money-saving quest that can lead to catastrophic failure... Do it once, do it right. You'll thank yourself later ;)

That's my $0.02,

its easy enough to have ray have the client sign a waver...
or have the motor compression tested prior to tune...

FDNewbie 08-29-07 04:18 PM

Jio, a compression test won't tell you about things that may only come to light when the engine is under stress. Also, it doesn't tell you about other things that could have been done sloppily (boost controller, wastegate, fuel system, etc).

Also, the problem with the waiver is, while it may shield you from any financial responsibility, that person who's motor blew (for sake of example) could and in all probability would still go and tell ppl "Oh yea I was at such and such shop, and they blew my motor on the dyno." IMO, the cost of rebuilding a motor for free for a customer is NOTHING compared to the cost of losing business from MANY individuals due to badmouthing/a tarnished reputation.

Couldn't have said it better!

ROT8TN 08-29-07 11:59 PM

IMO just taking the whole car to Ray and spending a little more money goes ALONG way. Seriously all the headache of doing it yourself and cutting corners just to save what a few hundred?? Fuk that just take it to ray and you know your shit is done right:icon_tup:

MADDSLOW 08-30-07 01:14 AM

I don't know. I just don't think it is fair to the individuals who KNOW Ray will give them a great tune, and won't bad mouth him because of their stupid mistakes. If I have a strong running car that I want tuned, I want it tuned by the best. I'm really disappointed I didn't make it in before the lock...

Dude, I've seen some SHADY ish go down w/ forum members. Ppl who were HARDCORE supporters of (insert your name of choice here), buddy buddy, always referring ppl to 'em, then once something went sour (insert your noun here, be it money, car, tune, blah blah) all of a sudden ALL SORTS of badmouthing came about. I've seen this happen MANY a time. Ppl are very quick to forget the favors upon them in the past, simply based on the short terms problems of today.

VTECthis 08-30-07 03:35 AM

......the only reason Ernie T gets tuned at PFS is because he is so man pretty....

it happens with every shop. people are quick to lay blame, and even quicker to blow a story out of proportion.

:wallbash: Same here!

I would pay the tunner, just to have him check EVERYTHING before dyno tunning it. One of the reasons why I wanted somebody local, rather than going with Steve K, or BDC.

I understand that, but that is associated with EVERY business(I KNOW you know this, I see people giving you a hard time all the time). I think it is something that the business needs to accept, rather than just shut down... the talk of a few idiots wouldn't make me change my mind on going there to get it tuned, I've heard MUCH worse from the shops locally.

Ray Wilson is like the Babe Ruth of RX-7s. People can talk all the shit they want, he'll still be among the greatest.

LOL. Wow...I didn't even think about that haha. Wasn't referring to myself...but I can't disagree! :shakes head: haha

See that just sucks from a business perspective, because your aim is to maximize success while minimizing risk. And I personally don't feel that that is an acceptable and expected risk to HAVE to take, ya know?

Yea but sometimes it gets a wee bit outta hand. Without mentioning names, I actually went to visit a fellow RX-7 specialty shop, and lo and behold, what did I find right there, across the street? A few kids (teens) who had picket signs w/ warnings not to go to said shop, and once I rolled up, they approached me and started telling me about how said shop ripped 'em off, blah blah. This was the FIRST TIME I was visiting this shop mind you. So I was like WOW... Naturally, after that nice welcoming, I went inside, met the owner in person, had a nice long discussion w/ him in which he explained the situation - a typical situation I've heard of happening at many other shops, so I wasn't surprised - and that was that. But you just don't need to have to deal w/ that kind of garbage publicity for starters IMO.

LOL wanna bet? A few ppl start sayin they popped their motors, and I don't care if his last name was Mr. Wankel, ppl would be like "Oh yea, he WAS the greatest. But lately man, he's poppin motors right and left. I think he lost it." Then the other person would b like "Yea...man...that sucks...now we gotta find another tuner." lol. Sound familiar?
