Just bought a 1990 FC with NA engine. Not passing emissions. Does anyone know a mechanic who diagnostic computer that will tell me whats wrong?

My regular mechanic said his SnapOn diag computer could talk to the Mazda computer.

I wrote a big thread on there about my emissions problem and it still hasn't been approved by moderators. Wish I had a copy of it so I could post it on this site since slcrotary.com is pretty dead.

Sorry, I just approved the thread this morning. SLCrotary forum is kind of dead, but if you're patient, you'll find that some pretty knowledgable locals will respond.

Love that FC. It was my buddy Andy the initially built it. It's gone through a couple owners since then.

Are you an engine tuner? My '91 is still not running well. Can't find any mechanic that knows how to work on it. The last guy got my emissions down enough to get a waiver after spending over $400, but it's hard to start and idles rough now. Still running way to rich. I want to install a Megasquirt and rip out all the emissions control crap, but first step is to make sure car is running properly first. Thinking of skipping that first step. Compression tests show the engine is good.

If you're interested in helping I can supply cash or other goodies. Maybe even help with your turbo swap if you need more hands.

Yeah im not too sure why its not running right.. i'm in tooele county so theres no emissions tests for me. On my 90 NA it ran funny after a rebuild and if i remember right it was timing. i did everything though, rebuilt the engine and injectors. not sure what to tell ya.. i just got my turbo engine/trans. getting stoked to get it in my car!

I'm wondering if I bought the car from you. Got it in Tooele. It's white with a band up from passenger fender. My intention from the start is to put in a new EFI system like the Megasquirt and convert it to CNG. Megasquirt How-To says to get it running correctly before converting. It's dumping in way too much petrol as it is so running super rich. Guessing it has something to do with the complicated vacuum solenoid logic circuit. Too many possibilities so I'm just going to rip out the factory emission control and install the Megasquirt with all new sensors for it including a wide-band O2.

Got a new Honda NC700X so I get 68MPG now. I'm down to come help you with your turbo/trans just so I can see how everything goes together. That's super valuable experience to have before I tear into my project this fall.

It's white. Met the seller at the truck stop just off I80 for a test drive. Bought it in June last year. It ran fine until I had my mechanic work on it for the emissions. Whatever he did now it barely wants to start and doesn't idle well. I had it idling perfectly after adjusting the TPS. Anyway, I bought it for a project and so I'm just going to go forward with that instead of trying to figure out why it's running so rich. A wideband O2 sensor running in closed loop with a new computer should fix that. Goal is to get it to run on hydrogen, but first step is CNG.

Thats the one! man i miss that car, it had a sweet interior. Sorry to hear your having problems.. if you need parts i have a bunch, pretty much 2 of everything for NA engines except the block. also have a passenger fender thats white, and a bumper (black in decent shape). I have a S4 ECU (not sure if it works for the S5) but it works.
