uh oh. unusual no start

i went to a junkyard to pick up a new (used) fender for my car and when i tried to leave it wouldnt start.

here are the details:

it ran fine the whole way there. i left to get a new socket, came back and left the car running on the turbo timer. when i got in to leave, my car wouldnt start. it ended up being because my leading coils were not sending any spark. :wallbash:
what would cause them to sudenly stop working? what all should i check?

rx72c 09-18-08 03:27 AM

getting a crank signal?
may have coincidentally burnt an ignitor or burnt your ecu one of the two?

dean23 09-18-08 07:04 PM

ecu should be fine. i can open it up with my laptop and everything seems fine. how do i check for a crank signal?

rx72c 09-18-08 08:34 PM

do you have a flashing orange light on crank?

dean23 09-19-08 11:15 AM

on the ecu box itself? i cant see it, its under the pass. floorpanel. is there a way to check on the handcontroller or laptop?

dean23 09-20-08 01:08 PM

there is a flashing organe light. so now what?

rx72c 09-20-08 06:40 PM

ok.
id be swapping in another set of coil packs and ignitors and if it dosnt work.your computer is fried. not sending signal to ignitors.

dean23 09-20-08 07:53 PM

well my problem is that i dont know how to get to the ignitors. id love to change them, but im not sure if thats possible.

rx72c 09-21-08 04:28 PM

change the whole unit.
ignitor with coil pack. easier.

dean23 09-21-08 05:02 PM

what do you mean change the hole unit? change the ECU? how can you tell if the ecu is bad? all the lights work and no errrors show.

rx72c 09-22-08 07:36 AM

oh shit
sorry i just realised you have an ltx8. my bad.

Ok.
Get a test light.

Put the earth clip on the strut tower or any earth.
Put the probe on the negative of the coil pack and get someone to crank the car. if it flashes that means ignitor in computer is working, if it dosnt flash computer is dead. if their is no light at all their is no power going to your coil packs.

dean23 09-25-08 04:01 PM

well i already sent the unit to microtech. hopefully they dont charge too much. i barely have enough money to start college... :(

tmoon 10-02-08 12:02 PM

I just had the same prob, let me know what you find out

rx72c 10-03-08 07:05 AM

All these people having the same problem? if ignitors are blowing up. their is something wrong with the install of the ecu.

myfc3s 10-08-08 10:26 PM

Had the same problem once. It turned out to be bad grounding. LT8 works great since.

dean23 11-16-08 06:51 PM

turned out my leading coils were not gettin power, and my spark trg was set to neg all of the sudden

new problem no though....

my leading coil 12v supply : No power during crank, power while running...
this forces me to either hotwire the coils to start, or hardwire them. i hardwired them. hopefully this doesnt kill anything...... :icon_no2:

rx72c 11-26-08 05:08 PM

Just setup a relay with live 12v triggered by ignition and give your coil packs new power, use the microtech as the ignition trigger, if you need help setting up the relays, i can do a little write up easy.
