timing mark question

I'm trying to setup timing according to the Microtech Setup Tips manual.

It says to lock the timing and then set it to 5 degrees ATDC "the first mark you see on the pulley".

Slightly toung-in-cheek, I see two marks at the same time, not one first.

Seriously, does that mean the one on the left or right when in front of the car facing in toward the engine?

The one on the right is the one which passes the gnomon first, since the pulley is turning clockwise, so it seems that this would be the 'first' one. Am I right?

Also, on mine, i can't turn the CAS clockwise far enough to make the left one line up with the gnomon - it hits a stop and won't turn further. Would that suggest that the CAS was stabbed in wrong?

Thanks for the help!

Answering my own question, I broke out the Haynes manual and the illustration on pg 154 (Ill 8.4) indicates it is the right one in my description above.

Once I set the mark with timing lock on, then moved the light to L2, it aligns the left mark. So, I think I'm good.

L1 and L2 are the same coil. You only need to align L1 to the mark.
