Nice to meet you Spenser.

Maybe you can bring your FC around to the Puente Hills Mazda meet tomorrow.

Ahaha sick, glad you found my post. I missed the Mazda meet, but maybe next time. I just moved back home and still in moving limbo so I haven't been able to settle in yet.

FC is stock besides the catback, so I presume it's not much more than stock hp. Datsun is also stock. The STI was stage 2 with a full exhaust system and tune.

Welcome love the fc and the rims they look sweet

Just joined myself. Looking at the picture in your intro, when the smog tech saw that big exhaust pipe, I'd bet the smog tech spent a little more time checking out your car. :)

ghambino 05-30-13 07:12 PM

Love black and gold!

I got a little lucky I think, the guy actually loved the car and talked up a storm about his cars too and it passed with flying colors. The shop I tried to smog it at previously had an old hag that sent me away after I walked in the door and he saw my car.

A good color combo indeed, with hints of red!

The car has been serviced and taken care of at RRR in Santa Ana and I'm ready to hit up some meets. I'll be attending the Puente Hills Mazda meet this next month, hope to see some guys there!

I have thought about living in California but the smogg test is scaring me away. I would only live their if I could take my FD with me but am worried it will not pass. I am not familiar with the regulations but are there any serious hoops you have to go through to pass your car?

Scels12 05-31-13 08:14 PM

yea ur pulling off the 530s real good

The main thing that would concern me is if you have a catless exhaust, that will definitely not pass smog. Most people put a catted exhaust on it and then swap it back afterwards. Other than that I'm not too sure about your mods or whatever other mods could jeopardize the smog. The STI passed smog fine with a Cobb Accessport tune, full exhaust system with a catted downpipe, intake, and BoV. So mild mods pass smog fine, the main thing is that darned catalytic converter. PM me if you have more questions, I'll be happy to answer them to the best of my knowledge or ask some friends.

Thanks man, I really think XXR has some good looking rims.

I can't wait to get my vert running decent enough so I can take it to RRR and have a diagnostic dyno pull and base a/f ratio, boost tune.

That sounds like a good idea, I almost wish I had a turbo but the 13b NA is enough for now. Hopefully a real turbo swap is in the future.

Yes, stay na. The only reason I went turbo is because I fried my 6 port (not on purpose, burst oil cooler hose). I was looking for a reason to go turbo and that was my reason and opportunity .

If you can, keep your na FC and buy a turbo RX7, or buy another na FC to swap in a 13B T, keep your na FC na.

I want to keep the FC NA until I have a reason (like you) to make it turbo. Power will be last any who, Suspension mods are on their way, and I'll be needing to rebuild the transmission soon too (got some grinding).

My main goal out of all of this is to learn about the cars and rotaries so that I can one day have a track monster FD (talking years from now) unless mazda gives us a new rx-7  that would be where the turbo comes into play. Really debating about selling the 280z to feed my new found love.

Thanks for the advice too!

Spirit R1 06-03-13 02:15 PM

You are welcome :).

Great plan to learn more about RX7's and RE's in general. When you start working on your FC you will love RE's and RX7's even more .

I am waiting for the new RX7 to drop too!! I am saving now for a nice healthy down payment.

Keep your Z, it's pretty clean, my brother owned a few Z's 1969 240, 1971 240 and a 280. I liked the power band and power to weight ratios on the Z's very fun cars to drive . But if you need to make a sacrifice...then do what you have to do :(.

Yeah, I've already fallen in love, the rotary feels completely different than anything else I've ever driven.

I was planning on saving up for something newer but this car is going to eat my wallet for a while :(

Definitely a fun car to drive and it's nice to have two working timeless cars to drive around. I just want to keep throwing money at my rx7 now, but we'll see. I probably won't let the Z go, it's tempting though :P

S4 Vert 06-04-13 06:29 PM

Good to hear you have taken to the RE and RX7, the smooth, high revving engine does have an addicting feel and sound .

And for sure you will be spending a lot of money on your RX7, it's just a natural habit . Racing Beat is a good place to start spending some of your hard earned money, quality parts that really make a difference.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Exactly! The smooth high revs won my heart over the first time I drove it. Literally feels like nothing I've driven before, not to mention the weight distribution.

I actually just ordered Corksport headers, DTSS eliminators and Bönez 2.5" Race Pipe. Not sure if I should make a build thread since I won't be 'building' as I'm taking my time with mods.

Raiyan84 06-04-13 10:34 PM

Bleh that's a nice 280! One of my favorite cars :D

S4 Vert 06-05-13 04:42 PM

Yes please by all means start a "Build Thread"! That what most of us members like to see (at least I do).

Good choice on your first aftermarket parts purchase. I bought a Turbo Intake Pipe from Cork Sport and plan on buying more intake parts and other parts.
