Hello! Joining this club to learn more and get advice about the RX-7. I recently purchased an '84 RX-7 GS 5-Speed in Sunrise Red for my 60th Birthday. I owned an '83 GS 5-Speed also in Sunrise Red that I bought as a college graduation present in '88. Drove that one for 10 years as a daily driver and put about 100,000 miles on it before I bought a "smoother driving" car. I always missed that RX and finally did something about it

Thanks, I'll have to post a few questions (or search FAQs) to see about an electric fan, better exhaust, and if I should put window tinting on or not!

Back in my post college days I tinted the windows, put the louver on the back, added a header, swapped the CAT for a glass pack, and installed an electric cooling fan. Seemed fun at the time, but not sure if I want to debase a classic this time around! Course, I need to install a new stereo...

Do what makes you happy! These cars are meant to be enjoyed! If you do decide to replace the radio keep the original one, or sell it. Tint could be a good idea to protect the interior plastics as they are quite brittle at 41 years old LOL. I have a vintage racing beat exhaust system on mine that sounds just right! A aftermarket exhaust may not be a bad option! Keep us updated you for sure have a gem! Where did you find it?

I've read on this forum that a racing beat exhaust is the way to go to start better performance, so I may just start there and call it good. Found this on Bring A Trailer (BAT). It's addicting! Not sure I wanted to buy, but I put a couple of bids on a couple, and when this one came up my wife said "go for it, you're turning 60 "

Usually you can’t go wrong with racing beat, I love mine! There are other options so do your research but in my opinion rb is one of the best! I would just save anything you upgrade, helps the value of the car! I think I saw your car on there! Absolutely beautiful! Glad your wife is in on it too lol! Congrats on 60 as well!

Ah, you follow BAT - I'd done it for about 3 years just out of interest. But then, well you know this was the one out of Moline, IA. Flew out, and drove it home after a 10 minute inspection. Did just fine to Colorado Springs. Except that the AC didn't work when i bought it. Had it flushed and filled when I got home and it's been blowing 40 deg for a couple months now. Also had the door dings rubbed out (PDR) and the body is great now. Just need to do something so it does well at altitude here. When i turn on the AC it runs at about 2-300 RPMs at idle...

Hey, nice conversation. My wife says she like your bronze RX "a very pretty color". She implied the color was nicer than mine, but I know she's wrong What's the interior look like?

Ive been following bat for about 3 years now ever since I got my 7! wow thats very lucky! ive been thinking about converting my a/c but it works amazing so I think I will leave it alone for now... ive been going over mine for the past 3 years making it perfect, pdr, paint correction, paint protection film, ceramic coat, little odds and ends in the interior. what is the normal idle? it should be about 800-900, there is a way to adjust it...

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your beautiful 85 GS!! I love the look of the car and the mesh wheels just look great on it! Do you know any of the car's history? It really looks to have been well maintained and likely with very few owners.

Yea, without the AC on, it's 800-900. I wonder if there's supposed to be some thing that bumps it up when you turn on the AC...

It's lived in Iowa it's whole life, original paint, probably garaged its whole life as well. Not sure of owners, guy I bought it from has owned it just since 2019. Not sure who put the rims on it, I thought it was too bad it didn't have the original rims but these grow on you!

welcome. very nice fb. there should be something on the carb the kicks the idle up when the a/c is on. check in the repair manual, there should be a procedure in there on adjusting it. look at the paint code. that color seems darker than the other reds i've seen. may be that persimmon red?

https://foxed.ca/index.php?page=rx7manual#firstgen

also another good upgrade would be to swap in the LSD 3rd member from an 84-85 gsl. basically plug-n-play.

RH Paint Code

Paint Code on firewall is RH. Might just be a sun/shade phenomenon! Thanks for the info

ok, it's probably just the fact that it's still such good condition. RH is sunrise red. the persimmon red is R7. there's also a renaissance red R3.
