Just picked up this 1984 FB RX-7 yesterday. It has not run in 3 years. The 12a in the car lost some compression on 1/6 faces (corner seal was culprit). I have another 12a (OG engine) in my room right now. I plan to clean and tear down the 12a in my room as a way to learn this motor as well as evaluate what parts are still good. I hope to get 2 good housings between both motors.

To my knowledge I believe I am in a decent spot here as long as I put the work in.

I will start a build thread to document my journey.

I would love any advice/tips anyone has to give me.

Welcome to the forum, fellow WA owner!

Yes, a build thread would be awesome. It looks like you have a great starting point with the car. Best of luck!

I am what looks like the 3rd owner. The car has spent its entire life in the PNW which is not great rust wise, but it has been stored indoors for the last 10 years. It does have a bit of surface rust at the battery tray, a little in the trunk area and a couple other minor areas. I plan to sand them down and spray something on them.

Otherwise I don't know much besides it had a brand new clutch put in before one face lost full compression ~3 years ago. Unfortunately I do not know mileage on current motor but I was given the original motor which seems to have had a lot more wear and tear than the one in the car, so I'm hoping for the best when opening up the 12a in the car.

Still looks like a solid car to restore, and the rust appears to be minimal. Does the car have high mileage? Are you opening up both engines and using the best parts to assemble one good engine?
