Twin Round Pop Ups!?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all, another FD from across the pond in England!:icon_tup:
Anyway, I've been looking into getting some twin round sleepy lights made for the FD, I really like them, so I want some, and think they improve the look of the FD!! They would be very similar to the Knight Sports ones, which are so hard to get hold of. Do let me know if anyone might be interested! I'd have to investigate the lights for America, as you drive on the wrong side :egrin: so will look into that! |

It's more difficult than it looks. You have to modify the control arms or motor to change the height of the popups and then pretty much custom make the lights and the shroud. If you made a kit that uses true HIDs with proper cutoff for the lows and whatever for the highs, you'd sell a bunch of these. |
I'm not a fan but to each their own. I do, however, give props to those trying new things even when they're retarded hard like that for something that seems so simple.
Thumbs up, fellow RX modders! |

I thought the KS kit didn't popup as high as the stockers. How is this accomplished? In any event, you'll sell a lot of these puppies if quality made.

@ OP, the Knightsports lights leave little space for a HID & projector install, It would be pretty tight fitting 4 decent projectors in there. |

Just adjusted motors, there is a "how to" thread on how to modify the stock lights height somewhere.

As for fitting decent projectors in the kit, you only need two projectors, one for each HID low beam. It's irrelevant though as the KS can fit in two 90mm units, which opens up lots of options. |

So you modify the motors? I've seen this done and it's as big a pain as just adjusting the arms.

Well I've ordered some HIDs...so will se how I get on
No modifications need to be made, the frames go in place of the old light housing thingy |

I was referring to depth rather than width :) - From what I've seen, they take up more space than is available (Using the Knightsports frame), although I could be wrong there.

I wonder how they would mount.
I have the KS kit but the lighting SUCKS. Lots of compliments on the looks, but I need better lighting. |

The problem with the KS kit for mounting is that they just have two 'slots' for securing/mounting. The same that you would use for mounting 'fog lights'.
I would love to see the options for mounting those Hellas to the KS headlight kit. |
Cool, thanks for the help guys, well starting to wonder if the engineer guy has really done anything yet....keeps promising, but nothing so far.
So going to go to someone else on monday, see if I can speed things up |
Again, if you make this happen, there will be a lot of happy guys here on the forum.

Im buyn!

Should have something to show you guys end of next week, I've gone to another blacksmith as the other kept messing me about.
I've got the light shrouds made up, out of Fibreglass. These will be a straight swap, and much more sleepy..... I get quite a shock when I go in a standard pop up car, they look awful! haha |

Now make this happen Mr. Charlie! |

Hi Guys!
An update!! Well have got one side done, pictures attached, the blacksmith is off on holiday tomorrow, but will be taking the lights to him a week monday, so we can get them fitted, and into the car! Now, for the lights, I'm using two lamps with H4 bulbs, which will give four bulbs produing dipped, and main beam...rather than the original Knightsports, which used one light each side for dipped, and one for high.....only one light working at a time! |

Yes, all four for dipped, and all four for main, will look better as well!!
|
Can't wait to see more progress on this.
|
So you ditched HIDs as an option?
|
Well havent ditched the HIDs....but four halogens will give good light, plus can be easily upgraded to HID if wanted, a guy who has done some electrical work on my rx says he sells good quality German HID kits for around £100 ($150)....but would need two as theres two sets of lights!
Anyway, lets see how good the light is from the H4 bulbs first! |

Anyway, lets see how good the light is from the H4 bulbs first! You end up with inferior lighting that blinds oncoming traffic. Sure you can do it, but it just doesn't work and I strongly urge you to offer true HID if you'd like but not retrofit crap. You could do this by using Hella headlamp module products. See: http://www.rallylights.com/Hella_90m...p_Modules.aspx |
Ah ok, thanks for that, well I didnt realise that there should be specific lighting set-up for the HID bulbs....
Will have some pictures of it on the car tomorrow, or friday! :D |

Yes, to do this right you need HID specific projectors for the HID bulbs or it won't work right.

Yes I agree with ^

In England we have an MOT- a test of roadworthyness of the car, checking things like lights. Now I'm pretty sure that these lights will be fine for here, but how fussy on light pattern are the equivalent tests in America?
If there needs to be light towards the side of the road, the bars which the lights are attached to can be angled slightly, as the KS ones are. |

Hi guys!
A quick update! Very nearly finished...but not quite, as you can see from the pictures, all the parts are sorted, just had a set back with mounting the lights to the framework, my initial idea of using the light rim wont work as it's all too tight for space, so will work on getting a mounting onto the lamp...then all done! |
Look forward to seeing how these turn out.
|
Ditto as I would like to upgrade my KS setup.
|
Looking good so far. Can't wait to see how they come out.
|
Hi guys!
Sorry for the delay, but at last I've found a way of mounting the lights in the frame, taking the bits to the Blacksmith tomorrow, so with any luck can test fit them some time next week! :icon_tup: |
I'm sooo ready to put these on my car!!! Please keep the updates coming!!!
|
Cool. just tried to ring the Blacksmith to see how he got on, but no answer as yet, will get over to him on Monday, all being well will then do a test fit!

The Hellas have mounting plates and are fully adjustable so they would be a good option for the OP. Let's see what he comes up with. Here are the units I recommend. For the lows:

Charlie,
How are we doing on the progress? |
Hiya- sorry for the delay, rang the blacksmith today, he's been snowed under with work....and mines just a small job.
He's got one side done, and he said to ring next tuesday...I will have my car back then, so will be able to test fit! :) |
Hiya! At last, should be getting the lights on in the next day or so to test fit!
Now, does anyone know much about shipping to America, taxes etc Could I just send, and you pay the tax, or not!? I've never sent things to America so not sure.. |
You can mark the items as a gift and taxes are waived!!!

Ok quick update-
Just finishing getting the lamps fixed correctly, so they sit in line with the cowling Now, I'd be looking at about £275 which, at todays exchange rate of 1.52 is about $400...how does that sound?? Maybe less, depends on his final pricing when he does the frames for me Plus delivery though... I have put a lot of time into these, and they will be much better than the Original Knightsports. Don't know whose seen them, but I have a set on my car, and seem pretty bad for the money, I understand they were around £600 ($800) when new? Afterall, the lamps were simply spot lights, one pair angled high one angled low for different light patterns. These will be twin headlights, two beams from each side, as they are twin filament bulbs...the knightsports are not, by the way, they are an H3 bulb. The Light Surrounds will be thicker, in fibreglass, could do carbon, but weave wont be good. |
Charlie,
The pricing is good, the inside light should be halogen (H) for fast high beam action the low beam should be a choice of either halogen or projector style housing, I know I have a HID in mine how that I would like to keep, but need a projector housing as the light pattern will be that much nicer and brighter overall!!! |
just throwing this out there, maybe get in touch with a stateside vendor like chaser, aerofiber, or shine and see if they could make them here to save on shipping.
