Tan to Black VHT Painted Rear Bins $9.99 y0

I used 1 can of VHT Plastic Paint (Satin Black). To prep it, I just used some Armor All wipes to clean up the grease and dirt.

1 VHT Plastic Paint Can costs $9.99. I'm sure it would've looked a lot nicer if I had more patience and applied 1 more coat but I ran out of paint. Not bad for $9.99 :) After I let it dry for 1 hour, I applied a plastic UV protectant to give it a slight shine.

Also, I accidentally dropped the rear bins on the ground and there wasn't a scratch (This is after 24 hours of curing), and I believe it takes up to a week for it to fully cure.

The after results look so amazing (It matches the dash and all). Tooo powerful! BAM!

It feels just like stock. It doesn't have a "sticky" feeling to it like other paints. :icon_tup:

I'm going to wait for at least a whole week before I test it out and try to see how it holds up against scratching :icon_tup:

seven lust 06-15-07 06:08 PM

That looks good, but next time I would scuff it very lightly with fine paper and then wipe it down with mineral spirits. That way you know for sure it has a good clean base for adhesion. I have not used vht for plastics but I have used other brands and it held up very well. I changed the spice plastics in my old jeep to black and they never scratched. only draw back is that it takes time for it to air out to where you do not smell the fumes of the paint still curing, but my top came off for that though.

let us know how it holds up six months from now. By then you should know if it is holding up well and if it is worth it for the people with tan plastics. by the way, good job so far:icon_tup:

drftwerks 06-15-07 07:20 PM

i wonder how this would look on already darker plastics, like the, ugh, red, blue , etc...

forced inducted fd dude 06-15-07 11:52 PM

i think i found my solution for a black interior lol

XxMerlinxX 06-15-07 11:55 PM

Risen, what sort of UV protectant did you use?

1QWIK7 06-16-07 05:37 PM

Looks good however i woulda just sold the tan bin and bought black.

It woulda been much easier to maintain and its the real thing.

I gone through what you went through. I did my whole tan interior and switched it up to black with the jdm rear seat.

Im soo glad i got rid of the shitty ass tan interior, its soo ugly when i think about it. Nothing like a nice all black interior, especially in our cars.

RISEN 06-16-07 10:37 PM

The black bins are expensive and shipping the bins is $. I don't mind having sprayed black bins/plastic parts. But for the door panels, I'm buying black ones.

There's one by Armor All, but I bought the generic version by Advanced Auto. Same ingredients. Don't buy the petroleum based ones because they'll eat up the paint :icon_tup:

NoDrySkin 06-17-07 05:23 AM

Anything by Armor All = crap.

How do you like peanut oil on your skin?

*RX007* 06-17-07 02:49 PM

looks a thousand times better! if i had a tan interior id definetly do this instead of buying over priced black pieces

I dont think the purpose of his thread is to talk about what you woulda bought. Anyone can just BUY something. kudos for you painting your tan.

pinkrx7 06-17-07 04:39 PM

oh, a recommended step for those of you who choose to follow in RISENS's footsteps. Go over your plastic with a scotch brite pad and a good degreaser, let dry, apply adhesion promoter such as bull dog or something and then add the color. it will definatly stick better.

Well like any other thread on any other forum, people have their opinions and the right to say whatever they want.

I already acknowledged the work he put into his car, i just added my 2 cents right after it.

I mean forums would be pretty boring if all the replies were...

"wow looks good"

"cool"

"great job"

"nice"

7_rocket 06-17-07 09:43 PM

always up to no good rob

1QWIK7 06-17-07 09:55 PM

Well i didnt say anything wrong.

Not like i bashed his work saying its crap.

Unless he has tan interior which could be the cause why he went PMS on me.

A tan interior is a piece of shit though :D

NoDrySkin 06-18-07 06:46 AM

1QWIK7 is gay.

pinkrx7 06-18-07 09:44 AM

lol leave him alone. i just wanted to let him know that its common sense to buy something that appears to hard to take care of. And yes, i had tan interior.

No way would I ever prep the surface of anything with mineral spirits before paint. Rubbing alchohol is about the best thing you could ever use. a nice tooth brush and some isopropal alchohol. then wipe with a clean microfiber towel.

silverflash2 06-18-07 04:09 PM

Where did you buy the paint?

Dude get on aim. You're never on aim anymore.

NoDrySkin 06-18-07 06:21 PM

I'm always on aim, you're never on aim. Why? Got plans?

pinkrx7 06-18-07 08:54 PM

no he wants to direct connect with you. hahahahahaah

anyway.. back to the thread. VHT paint is sold at premier auto part stores. i dont mean kragens or pepboys, stores that are a step above, they sell muscle car stuff and aftermarket seats and such but still sell everything kragens does.. if taht makes sense..

You can get the paint at summitracing.com

type in VHT plastic paint in the search and it'll come right up :icon_tup:

If you can get it locally, that'll be better because summitracing charges an arm and a leg for shipping. I bought 2 cans for $20 but the shipping was $11 for UPS ground :scared:

RISEN 06-22-07 03:29 PM

Modification to the bin and pictures of the interior installed:

Good stuff :icon_tup:

The only thing I don't like is that the vinyl on the center console is much shinier than the painted plastics. :uhh:

Just tell me when, babe. :gay:

Callsign_Vega 06-22-07 09:53 PM

After the paint is fully dry, wipe it down with some Armor All. That should make it shine a bit and protect it.

NCross 06-22-07 11:52 PM

armor all = gay

it looks good but its all greasy and leaves deposits over time. not to mention its not so great for flat painted surfaces.

Damn, such harsh words :(

spandy 06-24-07 02:22 AM

Just tint your windows, that will give you a 99% uv block is looks alot cooler than a uv spray :icon_tup:

In 6-12 months, drag this thread back up and lets us know how it's holding up :)

cabaynes 07-23-07 08:19 PM

hows this paint holding up? any wear and tear updates?

93'roadwarrior 07-23-07 10:49 PM

Where can we buy stock black interior pieces? Malloy Mazda?

I will have some updates later. I had to pull out the bin in and out at least 3-4 times. I also threw stuff on the bins (Tool box, radiator bottle, etc) on purpose to see how the paint would hold.

Yes, you can. Malloy Mazda is right down the street from me. Let me tell you one thing though, new stock black interior pieces are not cheap! If I had the money, I'd definitely redo my whole interior with new parts.

Terrh 07-27-07 09:12 PM

that looks fan fucking tastic.

I'm going to do that to the interior on my new FD asap.

drftwerks 08-08-07 06:34 PM

just orderd from here at 7.99 a can, but shipping was alot 11$ but still cheaper than summit

SYTP 08-08-07 07:59 PM

Update?

drftwerks 08-09-07 03:01 PM

oh and for 3 cans

John64 08-12-07 04:43 PM

I would have waited at least a week or more before putting on the UV protectant. If you want better stuff then that oil based armour all, get 303 protectant. You will never use anything else after using it.

FlavorDrops 08-12-07 06:04 PM

MMmM 303 aerospace protectant. Awesome stuff.

Brent Dalton 11-23-07 11:16 AM

Alright Risen, I think it is time for an update :)

jacobcartmill 11-23-07 03:17 PM

i did this to my door panels, headliner, kick panels, scuff panels, and i am about to do it to some tan interior 1/4 panels i just bought. i used the duplicolor "flat black" interior paint. it matches the dash and the stock black plastic pieces perfectly. i did it about 6 months ago. i would recommend using the flatblack duplicolor interior paint because it isnt all shiny like most interior paint, and it matches the stock black stuff perfectly.

just a word of warning: the interior parts that see the most "action" like the driver side door and the scuff panels will get beat up. my drivers side door panel has a spot (where i rest my elbow) where the black has slightly worn off. the passenger side door is perfect though.

bottom line, if you daily drive your FD like i do, i'd just buy an original black drivers door panel (or both), and black scuff plates, and paint the rest.
