New tereo Install 56k be scared!
Well, many of you have seen my old system and I really like it, but I was bit by the stereo bug and I'm redoing it.
Here are some pics of the old system: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_266_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_281_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_282_full.jpg Here its is now: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_285_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_286_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_287_full.jpg I use to run all my speakers off the headunit, but I'm upgrading to a badass Alpine 4 channel so I ran all new speaker wires to the rear (kick panels, doors and rears). As you can see it takes alllot of wires to make a system like this happen. The start of the sub box: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_288_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_289_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_290_full.jpg Dry fit of the side panels: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_291_full.jpg I will be doing a complete fiberglass top to this and have a real nice design in mind. I will be updating everyone as I go along. I hope I can help others at the same time. I should have the basics of the sub box done tomorrow and hopefully some fiberglassing Saturday. John |
Looks like a good start!

Update today:
Started gluing it together http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_292_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_293_full.jpg 1/2" chuck with a 1/4" rabbiting bit. http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_294_full.jpg Do this all around the box, so when you put your fleece on to fiberglass it will have something to staple to and an easy transition to the box edge. Positioning the sub: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_297_full.jpg Hot glued dowels in place once the positon is just right! http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_298_full.jpg Finished position and the basic cutout of the back of the box. http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_299_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_300_full.jpg Box placed in it's new home: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_301_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_302_full.jpg Next step is some internal bracing then the fleecing! |
I did not get as much done this weekend as I would have hope for, it was damn cold.
Put in the perminent internal bracing: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_303_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_304_full.jpg I stretched the fleece and used an electric stapler to staple it around. This is why I did that 1/4" rabbit all the way around the box. Now all the material will come up flush to the edge of the wood. http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_305_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_306_full.jpg You can see the shape now! http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_307_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_308_full.jpg I managed to get to coats of the fiberglass resin onto the fleece material before it got dark: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_309_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_310_full.jpg I'm going to let it harden over night then get a good coat of resin on the interrior edges and seams to seal it up real nice. Next step after that is 5 layers of fiberglass mat and then a nice coat of resin and cabosol mix on the interrior to realy thicken things up. |
Well today was a good day. I got 3 coats of mat fiberglass down and it's setting real nice. A couple more then some interrior box work with some cabosol.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_311_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_312_full.jpg I had to make a base plate for the box since the shock mounting plate hump up about 1/4" on each side. http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_313_full.jpg Here she is in her new home: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_314_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_315_full.jpg It will still need alot of sanding then a nice coat of body filler, with more sanding. I'm taking this Friday off, so I hope to have it up and running by then. |
Ok, I was busy and has no chance to post pics, but here they are.
Finished the wiring for the amps (lots of wires) http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_316_full.jpg The relays at the bottom are for so little neon tubes under the amps! http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_317_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_323_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_324_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_325_full.jpg Alpine MRV 303 for the fronts and rears. 60x4 http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_326_full.jpg Alpine MRV 1507 Bridged 1000x1 (thats max at 12.5 volts, so constant at 14.4!) http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_327_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_328_full.jpg Like I said, lots of wires! Heres the update on the sub: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_321_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_322_full.jpg Sanded, bondoed, sanded, bondoed and sanded one last time! Ity's ready to get carpeted and installed. I tested the amps and everything is up and running. I'm on the home streatch, I took off of work tomorrow, so I should get this thing buttoned up except for maybe the trim panels. |
not bad, how many watts? u running to it? my s-10 has two 12s and 2000watts. hits 153db
|
Read the above captions. Around a 1000 to the sub.

Well, did some work today.
I wanted to add some sort of flair to the box and this is what I came up with: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_329_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_330_full.jpg Its actual size as I took out one of the rotors I have laying around and did a little tracing. Box carpeted (Yes it was a pain in the ass!) http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_331_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_332_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_333_full.jpg Got it installed: http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_334_full.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...9_335_full.jpg Well it sounds real nice, just need to do some adjusting! Now the hard past of trimming it out. [img] |
Wow that looks great! I really like the rotor design on the box it adds a lot to it.
|
That's pretty cool. Congrats on a unique setup.

Tell me what yah think!
|
I don't really see the point of stereo's in sports cars, but i do admire your craftsmanship! You did a really nice job, and I like the rotor shape and rx7 emblems, very professional! I'm glad it blends nicely and isn't some crazy painted fiberglass with neon lights everywhere :)
|
great work! very clean install.
check out fiberglassforums.com if you want to. great bunch of guys over there that are all crazy for glassing. |
i hate you...lol i will soon finish mine but work is keeping me i actually have been sleeping over at work a couple nights in a row.....wait i hear john saying- bah stop ur excuses lol

My garage is not heated, but it's just been so damn warm for this time of year. It's been like 52 and it's Christmas!
