Those look pretty nice. How about posting up some night pics? I am curious how the brake lights look. Are they bright enough?

which leds exactly did you buy? tail lights look sick!

David Hayes 06-11-10 07:23 AM

Those look nice :) So when you turn them on, they come on at one level and when you hit the brakes, the light up brighter right?

infinite7z 06-14-10 01:00 AM

updates?

It was pretty easy to wire as well. Pay close attention when wiring the amber LED because if you connect the wrong wire it will not be bright.

sealing tail lights

I used 3M Window Weld to seal my tail lights. I have not had any issues with fogging or water in the tail lens. This can be purchased at Advanced Auto Parts or Pep Boys.

hey i noticed that around 0:55-1:00 the turn signal dimed down and was very light was that the camera trying to focus or the does the "leds" not stay constant brightness i was thinking that a bigger fuse was need to keep up with the new voltage?

they look like Semi-Truck tail lights.

i HATE when you can see each individual LED on tail lights. definitely not a fan.

you should try my 'diffuser' method. ;)

you could do the same thing that i did, but use a full circle instead of a ring.

I agree with you Tom but for the price, it's a great idea. Kudos to him for being so ingenious with the retrofit.

long story short:

get a 1/4" thick piece of frosted acrylic and cut circles in the size you need. then mount the LEDs about 1/2" behind the acrylic. it diffuses the light so you get a nice even glow over the whole shape instead of seeing each individual bulb.

the only problem is that it requires a deeper area to work with since you need at least 1/2" between the LEDs and the backside of the acrylic.

examples:

LEDs without light diffuser:

of course, i did a Ring shape instead of a solid circle...but you get the idea.

BLACK MAMBA 06-30-10 09:40 PM

not to hard to do, i did mines but with a full circle only, my parking lights are as bright as regular stop lights and when you hit the brake twice as bright.

BLACK MAMBA 06-30-10 09:45 PM

theorie
did you painted the circle to make it darker in the center. i like it ,i may have to do this to mines since i hate seing the bulbs also, do you have any pics of how you did the acrylic.

JJ42072 07-05-10 06:11 PM

nice.

not a fan of the diffuser....which is why I purposely removed it.

Too each his own

BTW these lights are $43.00 each ($25.00 + $9.00 shipping + $10 handling)....bringing you to a grand total of $172.00 and you haven't even gotten the turn signals or the pigtails for the lights. By the time you are all said and done you would have spent at least $270.00 in just materials. Pretty pricey for some tail lights that you'll never see unless you let someone borrow your car.

P.S. The purpose of my thread was to showcase a mod that I took the time to do on my car. I am catering to those individuals on this board that are looking for ideas on modding their own car and to answer questions on how I performed the mod.
If you are going to hijack my thread at least include pictures of LED tails on an FC not and FD or better yet...start your own thread.

atli126 12-14-11 12:32 AM

sweet

jinxed4dub 12-21-11 09:33 AM

I know its your thread and between you two. but I personally like the defuser method. not like he's steeling your customers. rings are sick. can be done on a FC just as easy as FD.

zhins50 12-21-11 06:19 PM

my buddy did the truck tail lights into his s5 vert tail lights... it looked quite good :)

That looks gorgeous! Could you make a thread of how you did it? I have a '91 FC and id love to convert it to those rings with light diffusers

David Hayes 01-18-12 09:03 AM

^ Here is a thread on how to do the work. Let me know if you have any questions:
