LED are really efficient (would love to have h4 led for headlights) but not sure how reliable this source is but....

http://www.eetasia.com/ART_880047983...A_8cc39878.HTM

heat does become a issue, some 1 watt led have a aluminum heat sink to help cool it down.

Yes, some of the 3 and 5 watt LEDs I installed had heat sinks built into them.

OK for headlight but apart from that...

By the way, The new Audi R8 V10 has LED headlights....

Thus proving my point that soon LED will be the only lighting source used on cars. I love the Audi R8!

David,
Any progress on that "kit"?

Everything you need it listed in my first post. I am on vacation now but will see what I can do when I get back, of course with the approval of the forum.

That superbrightled website gets an 'F' from me on ease of use. Just wasted a decent amount of time on the site.... can't find the RLX5 brake lights anywhere.

Yes the bulbs seem to have disappeared from the website. Here is a link to the specs sheet for them and I think you really need to 5 watt version for the stop brightness:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/specs/1156-xLX5.htm

Matt's telephone number is on the bottom of the page so Rich, will you call? I am in theountains of NC will only iPhone Internet access.

ptrhahn 09-02-09 08:25 AM

LOL,
That is pretty much the worst web site in history. I should offer to redo it for a free set of LED bulbs.

I think when the time comes I'll just call him and rattle off all the numbers, or email him David's list.

Well, superbrightleds.com no longer sells the 5 watt LED brake lights. Damn - they really work well. I guess I will be unique with these. They now offer a 4 watt version you might want to try.

Let me do some research and see if I can find the 5 watt ones for you. They're really good and a great lighting solution.

David Hayes 09-06-09 07:53 AM

After much searching found two options on superlumination.com:

http://autolumination.com/1156_1157.htm

Check out the "Eagle Eye Tower" 11 Super-Power Wide Angle High Flux LEDS. They have one 3 watt LED and 10 side facing LEDs. Would probably work well but I don't know what the wattage is when you turn the lights on versus what it is when you hit the brakes. With the ones I ordered, they came on at 3 watts and went to 5 watts when hitting the brakes.

My choice would be these, the "Eagle Eye 5". They are 5 watt bulbs so I would assume when in parking light mode, would be less than 5 watts and when you hit the brakes would go to 5 watts. Someone (Rich) order a set and report back. Remember to order them in the color of the plastic lens cover, or red.

Have you guys seen this three year old post? I have 288 led lights per brake light with my setup. I doubt any of the drop in led bulbs will be brighter than my setup. Its a getto install but not one led has failed in the last three years.

Good god, that is bright!

I am going to post a recap soon of all the LED bulbs I used for a "definitive" list for you guys.

David where did you tie into for the footwell and door LED strips so it turns on with the door opening? I really like that.

Thanks. It really is a very nice upgrade and looks great at night. The answer is I don't know because I paid to have this done so I will have to look:) The car is at Kilo Racing right now (isn't it always?) but I will trace this down and get back to you. I would imagine you could use whatever circuit the dome lights are on to accomplish this as they come on when the doors are opened. Can't think offhand of any other lights that do this so that might be your answer. I also know the wires terminate in the driver's footwell area so i bet there is a circuit there that was tied into.

Supernaut 10-20-09 02:42 PM

Wooooooooow nice David. I can't believe I missed those shots.

It's hard to take shots of them as they are in the footwells and the bottom lip of the door. One of the nicer things I have done though as it looks very OEM Mercedes like when you open the doors.

Lots of good info, any word on that "definitive" list with exactly what bulbs and where you got them?

The funny thing is I was just thinking about this yesterday and couldn't remember if I recapped the "list". I'll do this soon. All the info is already posted though in this thread if you can't wait.

My93rx7 11-18-09 08:36 AM

Yeah I saw the list you made earlier but that website just isn't the most user friendly thing ever. I'll just have to take my time on there to make sure I am ordering the right ones. Has anybody tried those Eagle Eye 5's for the brake lights?

David Hayes 11-22-09 04:39 PM

The definitive exterior LED list

So I have been asked to post up a list of the LED bulbs I recommend for the exterior of your car. First, the list of LED bulbs I recommend, unless otherwise noted, were purchased from www.superbrightleds.com. Yes, the site is pretty crappy but you can find the ones I have listed with a little searching. There are a few exceptions to this so look at the links I have provided for each bulb.

Second, I have tried many, many bulbs to determine which ones are the brightest and which work the best. Based on my experience, there are several rules to follow:

1) Always match the color of the lens for the best light output. For amber color lenses, use amber LEDs, for red, use red LEDs, and for white lenses, use white LEDs. If you don't you will not be pleased with the light output. It doesn't matter that the bulb you are replacing is white, with LEDs always match the exterior lens color for best results.
2) If you want the best light output, always look for "circuit mounted" LEDs. These are usually described as high output LEDs and are generally 3-5 watts. You can usually tell these from the ones that aren't so bright because they are larger LEDs and come mounted in squares on a circuit board. Also, the larger the circuit mounted LED is, usually the brighter it will be. So, you'll note some LEDs list 48 or so circuit mounted LEDs while others only list a few larger circuit mounted ones. I have found the larger ones are brighter. In general, every LED I have recommended falls into this category. Another way to tell is if you can find it at Pep Boys, it probably isn't a circuit mounted LED:)
3) You get what you pay for. The less expensive LEDs have a much lesser light output so I would avoid these. If you don't have enough money for everything on the list (about $250) buy some a little at a time. No need to rush into this as your current bulbs have lasted for 15 years right and why replace them with crap? I have also noticed that LED pricing has stabilized over the last year or so so I don't know if they will continue to come down in the near future. Maybe these will make the perfect Christmas gift right?

So, on to the list and enjoy. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help.

My pleasure. For those that do read this, I hope it saves them time and effort in locating good bulbs.

BlinD26 11-23-09 09:21 AM

Just a quick question, you note
"Center Stop Light
Quantity: 3
Product: WLED-xHP15-T Wedge Base LED bulb $ 16.95 (each)
Options: Cool White "

Is this an exception to the 'match led color to lense color' rule of thumb?

LT1RX7 11-23-09 09:41 AM

That means you have the option of getting "Cool White". David just copied the description from the websites.

Do not stray from the color matching advice.
