Going from Bose to a non-Bose speaker setup?

Unfortunately, you can't just replace the speakers because the head unit is not an amplifier. Each speaker has it's own amp.

You'll need to just run your own head unit and new speakers. You may be able to use existing wiring if it's up to the desired task. The pain is the speaker holes in the door. You'll need to buy some adapters or make your own.

If you want a decent sound system in your FD you will have to remove all the bose stuff and find R1 front and rear brackets.Once you find these brackets you can run 6.5 up front and 6x9 in the rear.Get a 200W head unit and that's all you need. The FD cockpit is small and i don't feel that you need amps and subs unless that's what your into.

get alpine
SPS-600C up front
SPS-609 in rear
iDA-X305 head unit

and you will be just fine. But thats just my opinion

I'm in the process of putting together a sound system for my non-bose FD. I've talked to many ppl and almost all of them told me to forget about using any rear speakers if I'm after sq and clarity. I don't think you need any rear fill or staging in such small space.

This is what I'm going for:
Head unit: JVC but any decent head unit will do really if you run an amp.
Front: Alpine Type-R 6.5" components (spr-17s)
Rear: -
Sub: 10" Rockford Fosgate P2 with DamonB style sub box (look it up)
Amp: Alpine MRP-F600 4 channel amp

I think this will be a basic system but will delivery quality sound. Here is my thread about it:

And don't forget you can't fit speakers in the front with depth deeper/higher then 2.5"

WTF? The FD has a trunk? What page of the Factory Service Manual are you looking at?

Front door speakers and a [rear] sub. I agree that the rears are not necessary. I tried them and removed them as it didn't work well IMO. What I do like is the center channel speaker in the dash; it really seems to help properly locate the sound stage.

there are options. you can work with the factory bose setup, but as someone who has tried, it's not worth it.

pull the bose shit out and start fresh - that's the best way to do it.

I had 2 of the factory amp's die, so i hooked up the stock bose speakers to run off an external amp (alpine 4 channel). worked alright for awhile, but it never sounded as good as the stock setup. after the speakers started to crackle, i pulled the bose tubes from the trunk and junked it.

currently i'm using only 5x7 door speakers, though i want to add two more 5x7 speakers to the rear pillars (like the r1) and maybe get a small, self amplified, easy to remove "bazooka tube" style subwoofer for the trunk (no, not the NOS bottle one...haha)

My recommendation is to go to a car stereo specialty shop (not places like Best Buy). Tell them what you want for a sound system and how much you want to spend. They'll get you set.

Which amp is that, Alpine MRP-F300 or F600?

I wanted to change to save space in the hatch and because my original speakers finally started to crackle :lol: does anyone know about the rearharness being an issue since it was originally for a bose system? I noticed one rear speaker harness on the passenger side but drivers side that was connected to the bose hose didnt have it. i havent pulled out the bins yet so i dont really know if its underneath that. I wonder what other people have done for the door speaker mounts? does anyone have pictures of the nonbose ones i have never seen them. I have the rear mounts already in with some mbquarts. keep the info and the interest comming in i think alot of us have this friken problem.

just grab a piece of cardboard and flocate the screw holes, screw it to the door panel and plan from there. One tip: The space between the window when rolled down and the speaker and the space between the speaker and the grille inside are tight clearances. Try to find slim speakers if you can. I used Alpine Type-S components for my setup. Took a couple modifications to get it right.

Just took out all my bose stuff but wanted something to place back in there. I am not really big into car audio so I did a budget setup. JVC stereo which included the 6.5" front speakers and a hand me down 8" powered bazooka. Sounds pretty good in the car. I hacked up my driver's side bose bracket with a dremel and got the speaker to fit really good. I also found a non bose bracket for the passenger side which is much easier to deal with. Used factory wiring for the front speakers. For the remaining din I mounted my oil temp and wideband gauge.

Excuse the dirtyness, I am still finishing my interior project.

Anybody tearing out/has torn out their Bose stuff want to send/sell me a good Bose speaker to replace the one in my left door that now only puts out death rattle sounds?

Is this the set up you have? Just wanted to make sure they fronts fit okay.
