FD Door Speaker Options - 2024

So, i’m looking to get new door speakers in my FD. I did a bunch of searching, and the most comprehensive thread seemed to be all the way in 2004 and the market has changed so much since then. So I figured i’d set the stage for people to post the brand and model speakers they upgraded to, for me, and everyone that comes along after. Extra credit for those that put speakers in the rear bins and contribute that as well. In my search I seemed to come up with the door speaker size being 6 1/2 inches and under 2 1/2 inches deep. Feel free to confirm or correct that.

Thank you.

I went with kickers and the PVC adapters for the front door. Speakers fit very well. I tried to completely insulate all 4 speakers, then left them open to see if I could tell a difference. Sound quality was much better without the speaker cups that sealed them off.

I also chose a Sony Marine head unit for the higher wattage. Unfortunately, sounds ok especially with my car not having a cat in the midpipe. I would suggest an amp to get the speakers the wattage they need to sound nice. If I dont have the car running it sounds great. lol

I’ve seen the Kicker speakers talked about. Do you have a model # for the speakers, and what pvc adapters are you referring to? Are they made by Kicker?
Thanks for the reply!

I just saw the link. Missed it first time. Thanks again. Also, your center console with the red stitching is rad and your car is beautiful.

Space is Extremely limited. The speaker magnet depth is limited by the glass window in the down position and the mounting height is limited by the speaker grill (actually its more of the edge of the door panel that meets the speaker grill) there's a delicate balance that will allow certain speakers to fit if you place them perfectly. The only known aftermarket speaker brackets are the PVC style ones you can get from amazon/ebay or Bubble Tech adapter rings that utilize the non-bose speaker mounts. There's optional 1/16" and 1/8" spacers that you can get to help dial in the fitment.

Speakers that are compatible with Bubble Tech speaker Adapaters

Hope this helps!

I am currently replacing the front and rear speakers in my FD, sticking to OEM size (6x8) for the rear pair and bumping up to 6.5 for the front pair. Here are before-and-after shots of the mounted speaker on my passenger side door (my FD is RHD).

Before this door is done, I still need to install a new sound dampener/heat shield. I'll try to remember to post a more detailed summary later.

I went with Focal ICU 6.5 and Benny's adapter. His diagram of maximum depth/height to compare to the Focal dimensions to determine that they would fit. I did not use any of the additional spacers, just he adapters themselves.

I used a bit of closed cell foam as a gasket.

Hey Koa, do you have pics of how the 6x9's fit in the rear? I've always wanted to fit them over the factory 6x8's

Maybe someone can chime in, but I remember someone installing Focal PS 165 FSE component speakers. Focal makes a great speakers. Maybe someone can link the thread. I could not find it.

I fitted these. Twice in fact. Once with the aftermarket mounts, once with the bubbletech adapters.

I covered it on my Instagram.
