Fat 5 inch Tach...Rice or not

I was considering getting a that fat tach for my 7. I was just wondering what yu guys would think bout the rice factor

Railgun 05-07-03 10:00 PM

What's wrong with the one you've got?

Sprockett 05-07-03 10:31 PM

True - the stock one is big enough :)

Flyrx7 05-07-03 11:45 PM

Rice, fer sure

DrPJM1 05-08-03 06:09 AM

RICE!!!

apneablue 05-08-03 07:47 AM

If you're a RICER and you know it...Clap your hand!! :bigthumb:

Don't do it..the stock one does the job nicely!

r0t0r-rooter 05-08-03 11:28 AM

you guys need to seriously stop making fun of Crashunit.
That's not very nice :(

0110-M-P 05-08-03 01:17 PM

Yeah. 5" Tach=RICE!!!
The stock tach is good. The furthest I would go is put a shitf light on it if you really need it. But don't think thats necessary.

ScrapFC 05-08-03 04:38 PM

Yup. Looks like Unc'a Ben's. Smells like Unc'a Ben's. Must be...RICE!!:D
Don't really see the need for a shift light, unless you've cut out the overrev buzzer...

turbo4wd 05-08-03 04:41 PM

Sorry.. but the only cars I've EVER seen carry around 5"+ tachs are CRX's and old Civic hatchbacks.. Unless you're doing it for serious track duty.. I'd say the stock one is more than sufficient..

SyderJL 05-08-03 04:49 PM

What is with all of these damn rice or not poll?!?!?!?
IF YOU HAVE TO ASK IT IS!!!

TwinTurboRX-7 05-08-03 05:40 PM

Rice Rice baby da da da da da

bamastdnt 05-08-03 06:40 PM

uncle bens

BicuspiD 05-08-03 09:07 PM

Unless you need it because of your redline is really above what the gauge can display, it is a true ricer mod

BicuspiD 05-08-03 09:13 PM

turbogarrett 05-08-03 09:29 PM

what everyone else said. it looks ridiculous and is unnecessary unless it is a drag car, even then all you would need is a shift light.

Street King 05-08-03 09:57 PM

If you have a tach stock then yes it is rice to get another one. If you don't, then by all means get one.

skunks 05-08-03 10:06 PM

it really depends on if its hooked up or not. If it is, no it is not rice. Especially if it has a shift light (try drifting around a corner and keeping hte car at high revs. Its very easy to rev past 9k especially in the lower gears! God I wish FD's had an adjustable revlimiter which would spark cut instead of fuel cut!)
The shift light will let you know what rpm your at. When flying around a corner, your usually paying more attention to how much your countersteering, how close you are to the sidewalk/cliff or what ever other obstical your trying to get around at the current moment. Its also nice to have a easy to read tach which is a bit higher then usual (you dont gotta keep looking down!).

Rx-7Addict 05-11-03 03:32 PM

its rice, the stock tach is big enough

Liquid Anarchy 05-11-03 03:49 PM

Get it... if you intend to mount it in the stock gagues' position.

looser4200 05-13-03 12:23 PM

well i would go for it b/c it looks good and its rice but do what u want its ur car

ilike2eatricers 05-17-03 11:04 PM

i love how the tach is right in the middle in plain view. just unique styling and functionality

turbo85 05-18-03 12:11 AM

It is not a rice mod if it serves a purpose.

MILD7 05-18-03 12:43 AM

Mazda designed the stock tach to be in the center position of the guage cluster on the 3rd gen for the clearest view. There is no reason to get another one unless the original one isn't working....

Dan H 05-18-03 05:03 AM

Yeah, those huge tachs scream rice! I see too many of them in rice rockets around my area. Even on automatics too.

Like mention 10X times before, the stock tach is fine. Besides, for city driving, real pros shift by engine sound. ;) If I'm pulling hard, thats what the redline buzzer is for. :D

ReZ311 05-19-03 04:41 AM

It's not rice if your redline is 9.5K and Run low 11 second 1/4 mile times.

Dan H 05-19-03 05:11 AM

You're an exception. ;)

ReZ311 05-19-03 11:27 AM

Good. I Just hope the rice police don't pull me over and make me pop my hood!

You run low 11's? I don't see a cage in that car, where do they let you run 11's without a cage?

Flyrx7 05-20-03 01:24 AM

Personnaly, the additional big tach is kinda' rice, but if it's abilities are necessary for what it's used for, then fine. I've been actually thinking of getting a 60mm Defi link tach, just so all of the playback features of the other gauges make a little more sense. The only problem is, where to put it, I don't want to look rice with (2) tachs, but visibilty with the playback would be beneficial. Hmmm.

Frank

Flyrx7 05-20-03 01:31 AM

Would this be rice, with the additional tach in the large pod section on the left (60mm), with the other Defi Links in the (3) smaller ones (52mm) to the right? Or should I just hide the tach in the glove box until playback is desired.

Is this reply for the 5" tach, or my question above about the 60mm tach, or both?

ReZ311 05-20-03 02:57 PM

Flyrx7, if your car runs 12's or better, he can shove it right up his gay ass!

PVerdieck 05-20-03 03:03 PM

Sorry, that was my response to the original question. When I got down this far I realized it was kind of ambiguous, and meant to edit but I forgot.

As it is, you have a large stock gauge available. So why would you want to take your eyes off the road, and focus on a smaller gauge to see the same info? OK. if it is for playback only, then I'd say keep it in the glove.

I would find something else to put in there, though it is kid of cool that the leftmost pod is larger.

I am not generically smacking on installing more gauges. Hell I have 2 defis in the center speaker, and a boost on the column. I will be running Water T., Oil T. and EGT on the pillar when I can get a hold of the Autometer full pillar pods...

ReZ311 05-20-03 03:11 PM

All my gauges are peak hold, except for the tach. A/F has playback.

Tach helps out alot! Neva mis a mad shift yo! :)

Pressurized 05-20-03 07:21 PM

it's pretty ricey...and besides you dont even need one anyway, just listen to the sound of your engine, you can tell.

Dan H 05-21-03 02:03 AM

Yeah, ricey for stock cars but I can understand situations like ReZ311 where it has a higher redline than stock.

rotobiatch 05-23-03 11:40 PM

RICE!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHH get it away!!!!!!!! sry, um yea i think its a bit rice...........

Jasooner 05-24-03 12:41 AM

The question is its function rather than it being ricey... The only reason to get that is if you plan to rev higher than the stock tach can read (i.e. 8500rpm+). I had to have one on my CRX because I shifted at almost 9K, and the stock tach doesn't go that high. If you get it just to "look" fast or want more gauges, I would say better off spending your money elsewhere. That's just me though :D

Rotorific 05-24-03 01:27 PM

I think its rice at times and on different cars...but no matter what model car you have an rx7 is a sportscar and having an external tach is not rice. I for one have an apexi tach relocated in the dash (same size) .. I also put the stock tach back in for a while....the difference was sickening how much slower and unaccurate the stock tach was.

TwinTurbo93 05-28-03 11:50 AM

Remove the original 1st!

pillage6 05-29-03 03:01 PM

I never thought of it being rice. I believe the stock gauges are not the most accurate, especially after 20 years of aging.

I guess I am rice since I have a pillar pod and clear lenses too.

Damn, never thought in a million years would I be a ricer.

GarageBoy 05-30-03 06:09 PM

Hmm, on Vosko's webpage, there is a link to the JIC exhaust video. I see a huge tach on the left side of his RHD car, but it is not hooked up.

introVert 06-04-03 08:57 PM

The stock one is mounted at center stage where it should be, and is more than adequate for the job. If you are doing it for looks, then rice away- but for functionality- leave it stock. Mazda knew what they were doing when they designed it. (imho, anyway.)

pillage6 06-05-03 10:39 AM

Well, I hear the stock boost gauges on FC's and FD's are junk, straight from the factory.

A 20 year old car's gauges might be even worse wouldn't you think?
