aftermarket steering wheel: getting horn to work

If anyone has had any problems with getting the horn to work on thier aftermarket steering wheel using the momo hub adaptor, i used a simple bracket and spring that will stay in place and make contact so that the horn wil work. i attatched some pics of what this looks like. i put the hub above it to show the back side, the spring rotates around the metal outer ring

A-Spec 02-26-02 05:29 PM

that's a good idea! I just have the metal...the spring is pure genius hahahah

by the way, how did you get your dash to be all carbon fiber??? it doesn't look like a lay-over kit!

beleive it or not its just a vinyl type sticker that goes over the stock panels, the kid i bought the car from actually put it on, I think he just took his time, and i think the key is to use water and soap on the surface before you lay down the sticker part, then you can slide the sticker around on the surface until its in the right place. it will stick just as well as if you hadent put anything on.

The horn and the air bag warning light are the problems with the momo hub. Mazdaspeed makes a hub that has a horn set up and an air bag by pass so the system still thinks everything is ok.

you mean this thing?? :)https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...&postid=469637

the air bag beeping noise can easily be disconnected and the air bag light taken out, and in my opinion i would rather have a 100 more $ in my pocket and just disconnect a few more wires.

:withstupi
no pun intended man.

Since this is an old thread the pictures no longer work. Does anyone have any pictures of their setup to get the horn to work?

Yah it would be nice to see pictures of this .. I still have no horn LOL

FDNewbie 05-21-05 11:56 AM

Neal, Scrub and I did this install on my car a year or so ago...I remember we spent a LOT of time on this stupid thing. I did write up the info on how we figured it out in a thread Ken (fd3virgin) posted requesting help w/ the horn about a year ago as well...but since the search function's taken a crap, I can't find it.

The important parts were: 1) finding the wire, 2) leaving more than enough slack so that when the wheel turns, the wire isn't pulled off, 3) grounding the wire VERY well. We spent some time finding an adequate ground, and finally grounded it on the steering wheel nut itself. Worked like a charm. Oh, and the momo wheels/adapters come w/ a horn button and contacts on the back of it for you to insert the horn wire onto.

Check this out: http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/body.html#STE I know it left us confused and frustrated at times, but helps a bit too lol

yeah, I have the whole wheel done except for the horn connections. It is an incredible pain in the butt.....

FDNewbie 05-21-05 04:39 PM

Yea...horn is a big deal w/ me, esp since you know how ppl around here drive (or don't know how to drive...more accurately). I'm gonna be getting one of those two-tone high pitched horns, to blare at those deaf guys turning into me...

Hey...did you pull the light for the airbag? Might wanna do it so it won't keep blinking at you (plus you'll never pass state inspection w/ it like that, and insurance companies may refuse to pay out if they see it too). As for the computer, my suggesstion is, LEAVE IT IN. I took out mine to get rid of the annoying 5 beeps on startup, but now I don't have a passenger airbag. That's a big liability, cuz passengers are a responsibility. So I'd leave the computer in, and just deal w/ the beeps. It can't be THAT bad... I'm gonna be putting my computer back in again.

su_maverick 05-21-05 07:57 PM

yeah, I am leaving the computer in for that specific reason...
I havent taken the light out yet because it is a pain in the ass to get to, even with a screwdriver..

FDNewbie 05-21-05 08:53 PM

Screwdriver? Get up underneath the dash upside down (easier if you take out the seat), feel for the bulbs (I forget which one it is) and yank it out. Stop bein lazy :p:

im wondering the same thing

i hate not having a horn, it scares me when i drive cause people here cant drive for shit..

I dont get why no one has a horn.

I dont have a connection on my HUB quick disconnect but I just put the end of the wire between my hub and steering wheel and its all good... Did anyone try this?

su_maverick 08-30-05 01:19 PM

still hoping someone will respond to this... I rigged up an external horn setup but was wondering how you set it up inside of the hub so it doesnt twist on itself and rip out.

FDNewbie 08-30-05 01:36 PM

Neal, you simply need to leave long enough lines so that when you turn the wheel completely to one side, it's not pulling the line short. Just bundle the lines loosely as is right inside the hub. Don't put the steering wheel center cap on, and turn the wheel all the way to the right, then all the way to the left. If the lines are long enough, they shouldn't pull off.

My lines were originally a bit too short, and came off. After giving them enough slack, they were a-okay, and I haven't had a prob w/ them in almost a year now.

ok, guess I will go with the quick and dirty version then...

Where are you guys getting your 12V from?

I have a momo hub with a wire that comes with it. Its located on the top where the positive is but its doesnt get voltage when everything is hooked up.

There is no way to put the clockspring back in with the momo hub?

neofreak 04-30-07 06:31 PM

hey, do you guys know what color the stock horn wiring is? the previous owner of my car left a mess under the steering column and I'm trying to piece it back together.

When everything is apart, you will notice a 3 prong white harness to the left, sorta under the turn signal lever. I believe its the wire furthest to the right, light blueish with a red stripe if i recall correctly.

Pics would be sooo useful!!!

DaleClark 03-15-10 04:11 PM

Wow, thread from the dead here....

Really, you need to use the RIGHT hub adapter. If you get a 2nd gen RX-7 hub adapter, you'll kill yourself trying to make it work. Get the HKB hub adapter, it's the same one for 1st gen Miatas. Plug and play, no dicking around.

I looked at using the "plain" Momo hub and it's a JOKE. Don't waste your time or money, the FD deserves good parts.

The horn wire is green with a red tracer. I used a multimeter to track down which pin on the oem connector was for the horn, and connected a wire with a pair of spades from that connector orifice to the back of the horn button.

FYI, removing the SRS bulb and the resulting beeps is not a very good solution. I hate the beeping already :)

Being that I have a 93 with zero airbags, I have no problem removing the airbag computer.... where is this sucker located?
