haltech in linux?
 

has anyone successfully used haltech in linux? is it possible? i'd hate to have to install windows on my laptop ONLY for haltech...

I'm sure it would work inside a PC emulator if your machine is fast enough.


So what did you say about not having an EMS???

i've tried to run halwin and halwinX in WINE and neither of them work.

it would probably be easier just to dual boot.

Isnt there something like Virtual PC or VMware that you could run in your laptop and install a Win98/ME/2000 viritual partition so that you can run your Haltech software from there? I wouldnt use XP since its too damn big and complicated anyway. Does your laptop have a serial port built in or will it need a USB adapter? Get the keyspan, just so you can be sure it will work, or a PCMCI one, they are cheaper now and those work great too.

With the EEE, you could probably get a small SD card and boot 95 off of it.

that's what we're gonna try to do. however i think we're going to have to use 98 or 2000 (hell, maybe even XP) so we can have as many drivers as possible for this laptop (which was built for linux)

now we just have to figure out how to install the software onto the SD car from the windows setup... IIRC, the windows setup software wont recognize the removable drives

no serial port, just USB. otherwise we'd just be using the DOS software; unfortunately theres no way to get a USB/serial converter to work in DOS.

The EEE cant disguise the SD card as an ata drive?

Will that laptop take a PCMCI card? PCMCI Serial cards are dirt cheap now, if you can put VMware on it with 2000 and install that card, you'll have no problems running DOS directly, i think. :D

nope there's no PCMCIA slots. just SD and 3 USB slots.

i think im gonna just install windows on an SD card.

Try VMware, no external storage device needed, but you will need a serial adapter, since you only have usb ports.

Get the Keyspan.

Just incase you didn't know, he has a EEE, it has only 4GB of internal solid state HD space, and an SD slot, then a usb interface.

WOW, you have NO problems what so ever running it on the EEE? How long does it take to boot windows? Is it somewhat laggy on the system with such low Stats? I did not even know a computer like that was avaiable, and you have me really excited to buy one. Since it's so small, and has a 7 inch screen, I REALLY want to see if I can fit it in my dash somehow and use it as my gauges! Please keep us up to date on how everything works! Also, by chance, could you look at the AC adapter and see how much volts and amps are required to power it? Would be awesome if it was super low and wouldn't be a tax on my eletrical system/alternator. :D

I looked up the car charger specs, and it says "Output : 9.5VDC-2.315A". Wow, 2 amps, I think I could afford to give that up! (after I upgrade to FD alternator that is haha)

Why would a computer with a 900 mhz processor, and a solid state drive (which is arguably quicker then a standard hd) not be able to run a program that is able to run in DOS?

just an update:

i installed XP on the EEE PC last week, and i've been running the halwin software on it with zero problems. the size of the screen is a slight problem for some of the "taller" setup windows in the Halwin software -they can't totally fit on the screen- but it hasn't been too bad.

What about Windows XP tablet Edition.....I have a Compaq TC1000

why not just buy a $20 win98 laptop? i got one on ebay with a blistering 64mb of ram, 8gb hard drive and it works great. it has a pcmcia slot, nic, usb, serial, etc. i don't see the reason to carry around a nice laptop for tuning purposes.

Yes, I have used Halwin on my Macbook Pro via VMWare Fusion and a Radio Shack USB to Serial adapter. Works great!
