Engine sputtering and shutting off w/ E6K

Okay, my FD has been setting around for a while and I want to finally get it properly tuned, but before I do this I want to get a major problem I have with it cured. The problem is like this, I'll be driving it around for a while and then all of a sudden the engine starts jumping erratically, backfiring slightly and then finally shuts off and will not start back up. For instance, I drove the car 130 some miles to a location for the weekend and drove it around while I was there for a day or two with no problems. But when I started back home, I experienced this problem and could not get it restarted and had to tow it back home. This was after letting it set for about an hour, while checking plugs and wiring, but couldn't find anything wrong. After towing it back home, the next day I go out to it and it starts right up.
This used to happen periodically back when I was driving it, but could never figure out the problem. Anyone ever experience this or know what it might be?

its hard to say with that description over the net...could be alot of things...if you have a laptop, hook it up and do a datalog and hope you can catch it. when you try to restart, does the fuel pump prime? where is your ECU mounted at?

Yes, the fuel pump is supplying pressure when trying to restart and the ecu is installed where the passenger side air bag would be.

Could be a bad alternator/battery.

My .02:

Alot of the maps have a coolant map that yanks a crapload of timing if the temps start going above a certin temp (usually 210 or above). Now its possible you went above this temperature, and the ECU shut you down. I would listen to 1fastrx7turbo and get a log, he knows Haltechs.

Makes since, but then why wouldn't the car start back up after an hour or so?

Takes a while for the coolant to cool down? Like I said, its only an educated guess...

Also, now that I think about it, this seems to always happen at very low rpms, like when driving in a parking lot or stop and go traffic.
