A discussion started a little while ago revolving around doing some tow hooks for the FD3S. We thought; "why not titanium?".

So here we have our first batch of prototypes...

Not sure what the crowd is gonna think. So we figured we'd throw it up here for criticism, feedback, input... and of course, interest.

- Grade 5 Titanium. Waterjet cut, CNC finished, bent, polished and burnt (or brushed) here in the USA.
- Available as matched front / rear sets or individually.
- Available in 'Burnt' finish or Brushed.
- The front should work with OEM USDM front ends, JDM 99Spec front ends and most aftermarket fronts ends - but obviously we haven't tested all of them.
- The rear will replace the OEM tie down bracket (which is discontinued by the way) and fit with OEM rear bumpers and some aftermarket diffusers. I'm sure the RE-A Street will require some cutting - although the Pro should fit without issues.
- Each tow hook will also include titanium hardware to complete the package.

Soooooo... cool?

You guys are on your own group buy list hehe... Any range in price yet?

FEED AFFLUX v5 12-06-18 08:04 AM

Awesome to see this group buy! I am very interested!

Couple of questions;

1) Any idea on price point?
2) Do you have an OEM rear tie down hook for comparison pictures? Mine fits perfectly with no cutting of my aftermarket bumper - I am curious to see if this one is the same overall shape/size and will also fit without cutting.
3) Whats the length of the front hook and what it the offset distance of the step out? Curious to measure and see if it will clear my aftermarket bumper.

To clarify I am hoping that you can control the heat in order to widen the purple band band, something like the image below if possible?

If it cannot be done, it's not a deal breaker.....I still want a set

Nothing is set in stone right now... but for comparison, the SuperNow tow hook set, which is powder coated steel, is about $300/set delivered from most vendors. These won't be cheaper then that, BUT you're getting an obviously superior product.

1) See above.

2) These extend further down then the OEM for aesthetic and usability reasons. I will get a picture today comparing the two. If you are stock back there (I know you're not) it'll fit. If you run the RE-A Pro diffuser, it will fit. If you run the RE-A Street diffuser it will require cutting (which I will do on my own car).

3) Total length on the front hook is 295mm.

I haven't tested it on the USDM passenger side... but isn't the exhaust in the way? Is there actually mounts there? I can look today.

So funny you mentioned this. I agree 100% and had the SAME thought late last night. YOUR diagram will be closer to production. In fact the coloring will start "below" the Alpha logo so a nice full range of color will be exposed when installed. :icon_tup:

garage alpha Thank you for the replies to the questions!

Once more to clarify, can you provide the length from the forward bolt hole to the start of the hook end (A) and the offset distance (B) in the image below?

I want to take some measurements to see if this will fit. I have a feeling it may be too short for my bumper. If this is the case, would it be an option to pay extra to get a longer version? If not, I can get an adapter plate made.

I cannot wait to get this!

Ok. Your 'A' measurement is 197mm from center to center of the 'hook hole' to the center of the first mounting hole. The bends are 40 degrees.

If those measurements don't work, I MIGHT be able to make a longer version, but so much of this revolves around as efficient utilization of the material. We figure out how many pieces best utilize what size sheet of titanium we need and order accordingly. A longer version might end up costing TWICE as much, not because it necessarily take up that much more material, but because it reduces the overall output of a sheet by 1 or 2. Aaaaaanyhow, that's a really long way around of saying "maybe". :)

An adapter plate might be smarter.

I think aluminum would bend pretty easily if you tried to tow with it. Not an ideal material for this.

I don't know if we got verification they WON'T fit... but let's make sure "longer" will actually work for you.

Maybe you can get me a measurement from the tow hook mount to the front edge of your bumper? At least that will give us an idea of what we *actually* need.

garage alpha - @Rotary_Menace and I have the same front bumper.

The one extra measurement we would need to confirm fitment is the offset distance in the picture below, so that we can see if the hook will fit into either the radiator or oil cooler openings (depending which way round we flip it).

Regardless of length, if the offset doesn't work with our bumper, we would need to get an adapter plate anyway. Therefore the adapter plate could solve the length and offset for us.

garage alpha - I really appreciate you producing this part and your support of all these questions. I am not trying to make your life difficult :)

No, not making life difficult at all. I just picked up a batch from the CNC and need to drop them off at the metal former so they can do the bends. I will also reach out to the guys that have these test units for measurements.

In the meantime, can you take a measurement from the OEM tow hook mount to the front edge of your bumper? At least that will give us an idea of what we *actually* need. :icon_tup:

Ok, sorry for the delay on my response, work has been crazy busy.

So first off, I feel dumb, as I am not 100% sure of the bolt hole locations. In the picture attached, are you referring to the green circle as the front bolt hole and then the rear bolt hole is the purple indent that will require drilling? (FYI I am running V Mount)

Or am I looking at completely the wrong area?

If i am in the right place, I assume then that your 30mm offset is to clear the bracket I highlighted with the red cross?

If all of my above assumptions are correct then the shape of your hook will place the hook into the bumper opening for the radiator. Plus the elongated holes in your design should allow sufficient play to adjust the angle to fit. Which is great.

As for length the measurements for the FEED ver.V bumper are as follows (please see my paper mock up for clarification)

From front bolt hole to bumper mesh (A to M) = 170mm. Therefore it should "just" fit. But I would expect it may be to be too short depending on what your 197mm measurement is to (the start or centre of the hook hole?).

FYI 197mm is shown at length A to B

To fully extend past the nose of the bumper it would need to be 315mm

My gut says the middle of these two, so roughly 250mm would be perfect. So likely an adapter would be needed.

Any thoughts on this or questions let me know!

You get an A+... extra credit for showing your work! :)

I will put all these numbers together next week when I am testing fitting and get you some feedback.

In the meantime, we have a batch of hooks that should be wrapping up soon.

Update is: we're cutting one more sheet of titanium in order to have enough to launch. From what we already cut, most went out to people for testing / feedback - which didn't leave us enough for a proper product launch. We want to have some on hand so people don't need to wait *too* long to get their product after order.

Basically, once we have a pile of cut/formed hooks - the group buy will tell us how many to polish/burn or sandblast. :icon_tup:

Just to keep you all in-the-loop... raw titanium is en route to the machine shop and should be there early next week.

From there it will be cut, CNC'd & bent. That should give us enough stock to officially open the group buy and guide us on how many get polished/burnt or sandblasted.

We have raw titanium being cut, CNCd and bent right now. We will have stock for about 20 of each. Here's the interest that I can glean from the posts:

1. FEED AFFLUX v5 - Front & Rear - both Burnt (with as much purple as possible!)
2. Copeland - F&R - Burnt (depending on price and measurements)
3. Cloud9 - F&R - Brushed (pending price)
4. Brekyrself - F&R - Brushed
5. su_maverick - R - Brushed
6. Narfle - F&R - Burnt
7. existanzrx7 - F&R - Burnt (would like to know price)
8. drifter-s - R - Brushed
9. 94 R2 - F&R - Burnt
10. Nakd n Fearless - R - Brushed
11. tv4184 - F&R - Burnt (pending price - as much burnt as possible)
12. REAmFC3S F&R Brushed (pending on price)
13. bigpanda - R - Brushed
14. Supranak - F&R - Burnt
15. castle2443 - F&R - Burnt
16. Kazuo7557 - F&R - Brushed
17. cvzg77r
18. idiazs

Once everything is cut and formed - we will start taking orders and that will tell us how many pieces get sandblasted and how many get polished/burnt.

Installed on JP3 Motorsports CYM. Slight trimming needed for the rear skirt. Nothing you would notice unless the car was up in the air - and even then - nada. :icon_tup:

Able to make one that doesn't require trimming? Any front fitment shots on a stock bumper?

Probably not. If we had to trim the bumper itself or some sort of conspicuous area - then a redesign would be warranted. But just from the placement, we knew there would have to be minor modifications. Plus those bumper trim pieces are available and cheap if you ever wanted to go back to 100% OEM.

Even the RE-A Street diffusers are pre-cutout for the OEM tow hook:
