Dual 90mm Headlight Kit available for pre-order!
Hello All,
We here at RS Engineering are pleased to announce our new dual 90mm headlight kit! This kit is offered in two different versions, so please read carefully to understand the options. You can view the product page at our website for more details and ordering options. (You can also review our rx7club.com development thread for more details.) First off, this kit employs four Hella 90mm halogen headlights which replace the factory H4 reflector beams. These genuine Hella lights are used by ALMS race teams and can be found on exotic cars like the Saleen S7 and Pagani Zonda. The light output is at least double that of the original Mazda setup and the system is completely weatherproof. The beams are DOT legal for use in the United States. (An E-code version is also available.) Unlike many other headlight upgrades out there, this kit does not require any cutting of the FD's frame. Below are a few pictures of the installed lights, and a comparison of the beam patterns. Installed headlights (Click images for a closeup) http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...dlight_1_s.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...dlight_2_s.jpg New CF kit on driver's side, old kit AL on passenger's side (Click images for a closeup) http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...nstall_1_s.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...nstall_2_s.jpg Low beams, top picture is stock (1/15s, f/2.8, ISO 200) http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...E/complg_s.jpg High beams, top picture is stock (1/15s, f/2.8, ISO 200) http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...E/comphg_s.jpg Low beams, top picture is stock (2.5s, f/2.8, ISO 200) http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...E/compls_s.jpg High beams, top picture is stock (2.5s, f/2.8, ISO 200) http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...E/comphs_s.jpg This kit retains the full pop-up functionality without interrupting the factory lines of the car. The trim panel is made with genuine carbon fiber and the mounting system uses corrosion-resistant aluminum and stainless steel parts. You can completely (and independently) adjust the lights from the front of the car. There is also an upgraded harness option that allows you to run both low and high beams simultaneously when the bright light switch is engaged. In short, this kit provides the best possible lighting performance and reliability while keeping the classic look of the FD intact. Installation of the kit is straightforward but does require some modifications as follows:
In order to do this you'll need a typical set of hand tools as well as a drill, a grinder (or Dremel), a large impact device (a hammer!), and a crimper or soldering gun. The kit will provide all the necessary brackets, hardware, ties, threadlocker, and wiring harnesses necessary to assemble and install the kit. The whole process should take 2-4 hours. The first production run of ten units will be available for shipping by March 15th so we are accepting pre orders now directly on our website. There are two options available:
As mentioned before there is an optional wiring harness upgrade for $39 that enables you to have both lights on when the high beams are selected for maximum light output. So, to sum up, these kits will start shipping by March 15th but the production run is initially limited to ten units. If you are interested please place your order on our online store today. There has also been some interest in an HID version of our kit. While we are not offering this immediately, we have looked at a number of ways of making an HID kit happen. We believe it may be possible to develop a complete HID kit for less than $1,250 and perhaps closer to $1,000. However there are a lot of challenges with this option including an increased level of install complexity. Development work is still needed to produce an HID kit, and we feel that the halogen kit will be more than adequate for many of our customers. However, if you strongly feel that HID is a must-have feature despite the increased cost, please send us an email at sales@rs-engineering.com. Otherwise, please place your orders for our halogen kit at our online website. Again, we expect to ship no later than March 15th! Thanks for your continued interest and support, -ch |
Yes! Tremendous light upgrade option for those of you that want much improved lighting and don't want to change the height of the popups. The Hella modules used in this kit are the best by far and the only light sources I know of that are LEGAL. Good price also. My advice is to buy the entire kit from Chris to ensure you are getting all of the right parts for this.
Do it! |
Pre-ordered. :)

So, do you make one that doesn't raise full height?

they should look into this, I would most certainly purchase a kit if they did. I also don't feel I could do something like david did.
What Chris is offering is a great solution for vastly improved lighting. I personally feel if you are going to keep the OEM height, then you are better filling the void with two lights instead of one. My countless hours of research and discussions leads me to conclude the Hella units are by far the absolute best way to go. There is nothing like OEM quality where all components are designed to work together and that's what you get with this kit. And did I mention the Hellas are legal too? For me, HID was a primary driver so I would spring for the extra cost of the HID based system but if money is tight, then the halogen solution appears to work great. You get a projector based low beam which in itself will help quite a bit with light dispersion and you also get if I am correct a H9 bulb which makes 1800 lumens compared with 1650/1000 Lumens for an H4 so the actual light output is enhanced as well. And no matter which way you go, spring for the wiring harness that allows you to keep the lows on while you use the highs. Never hurts to have all beams on at once and it will save the lows from having to cycle on and off. |
David, you just convinced me not to drive at nights :)

Pre-ordered my kit!:):icon_tup:

Nice set-up along with a nice price....

First off, thanks to all the pre-orders for kits. We're getting close to filling the initial run so if you'd like to be included please place your order at our website.
On the production front, we've ordered the raw carbon sheets from our supplier which is very exciting. The quality should be quite excellent, we're looking forward to posting some pictures as the carbon gets cut into the finished shape! Stay tuned, -ch |
I am very interested, just a quick question, both of them probably stupid: After the modifications required to make these fit, can I revert back to OEM without issue?
Also, complete detailed instructions are included on how to modify the housing properly, correct? Thanks! |

You guys should jump on this. RE-Engineering is using only the best Hella components for this kit. This ensures you'll not only be legal but will also have the highest output of light available. Convert to this kit and you'll be amazed you drove all around these years with the OEM setup.
And no, I don't work for RE or profit in any way. I've done so much research into lighting for my own conversion I am intimately familiar with the components Chris has selected to make this happen. The are only the best by far. |
I don't know why every time I see US made 4 eyes kits they all look like this.....
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LbccUVbSRd...der+eyes+4.jpg. Only the knightsports 4 beam kit looked "right" because all 4 were same size, the popups didn't raise all the way and it made everything look proportional. |

A quick update: my CF supplier had some delays so I'm expecting it to arrive later this week. Still hoping to start shipping next week, so stay tuned! -ch |
What is this upper bump stop thing? Any chance of a pic? I have this really annoying problem where if i align the headlights to be the same level when they are down, they will be unequal when up i've tried playing with every setting i've found so far to no avial.

Your issue is something else and I guess would depend on what you did to raise the headlights. With my conversion, we cut the actual control arms to achieve the height we wanted. Others modify the motor. |
Did these drop in price for the second run? How long until you will have the second run available for sale?
|
They look good Chris.
At 1st It tripped me out cause the lights on the left looked like they were screwed into cardboard or wood or something compaired to the ones on the right that were all Black ? Then after reading I figured it out CF on Right Ole Skool AL on the Left .. https://i116.photobucket.com/albums/...nstall_2_s.jpg |
