Bubble Tech Engine Cover (Coming Soon!)

6 Attachment(s)
We are currently designing an engine bay cover to hide the ABS system, Brake booster, lines and hoses along the firewall. They are very distracting and this helps clean up the engine bay appearance a great deal!

Material: 2x2 Twill Carbon Fiber
Price:TBD

Here are some pics of our progress:egrin:

Some pics. We will update as we go along.

**NOTE** the straight lines will be complete and close the gap from the cover and strut tower, we are unhappy with how this came out so we are rethinking our approach

looking good so far!

0piston 12-04-12 12:10 PM

Looks awesome, great job so far! I can't wait for the final product I've always loved the knightsports one. Will this be a pressured carbon fiber product as well to add rigidity or replace the need for a strut bar or will it be designed primarily as a cosmetic cover?

Bubble Tech 12-04-12 12:37 PM

Thanks for the comments!

This is more for cosmetics and designed to allow you to retain the use of a strut tower bar.

It will be made using the Resin Infusion process.

steeve2184 12-04-12 01:02 PM

Nice work! Cant wait to see the finished product.

Insane Driver 12-04-12 04:53 PM

It looks pretty good to me. Any idea when they will be available?

We are shooting for before Christmas. But that may be wishful thinking. Right now the door panels are first on priority then this. I'll say Ending of January to be safe =)

vrx8 12-04-12 05:54 PM

Are you going to start a group buy on doors panels?

Bubble Tech 12-04-12 05:58 PM

The door panel thread can be found here:
https://www.rx7club.com/vendor-class...-soon-1019606/

But to answer you question, yes the will be sold in a group buy type manor!

junkie81 12-09-12 11:14 PM

can't wait. Count me in

ptrhahn 12-10-12 02:32 PM

Looks great. One constructive comment:

It needs an access port for the brake MC. Especially for track guys, you need to be able to check fluid level and top off from time to time. Ideally you wouldn't want to remove the whole strut bar, etc.

Thanks for the comment. A few other people voiced this out along with the concern for oil dip stick access but this is purely for aesthetics so we decided not to add those for appearance reasons. We would image you would take this off for a track event as well as it would serve no purpose at the track (besides look really cool with the hood up!

I'm in

David Hayes 12-21-12 04:33 PM

Love it. I'd guess that would work on a 3 rotor, right? I've been searching for a way to hide all that junk in the back. Nice work Benny.

Bubble Tech 12-21-12 05:03 PM

David, Im un sure since i have no 3 rotor! I think 3 rotors will be trick as theres a few ways to mount the motor as far as sub frame placement... I think the 3 rotors might need to trim the cover to fit... Do you mind measuring how far away your manifold is from the firewall?

David Hayes 12-21-12 08:05 PM

Sure but it will be about a week. I use the Pettit subframe and I think it keeps the back of the engine the same distance from the firewall.

muibubbles 12-23-12 09:45 AM

Thanks david! I think we'll modify it to make sure it fits the 20b as well =)

yoojeankim 12-24-12 04:06 PM

very interested :)

ZumSpeedRX-7 12-26-12 11:05 AM

Awesome stuff Ben! I am loving this and the flat door panel. Sincerely, thanks for giving back to the community.

I have fallen way behind on my FD and have some catching up to do (and I am sure the fiance would probably love to get some bits out of our apartment and into the car), but would be interested in these two items in the future.

No problems. Will be next week before I can measure. I've left the friendly confines of Asheville NC for a blizzard today with family in Cleveland OH. Lot's of snow coming down :)

gjosuem 12-26-12 12:37 PM

Does every 20b setup have the same position or a distance (tolerance) from firewall? Would it make more sense to have a standard cover and a 20b cover? Just saying . . .

BeanieTec 12-26-12 12:37 PM

Great idea, really interested in this piece also. Subscribed.

No, they all vary. The ones that use the RX7 Specialties/Pettit subframe would be one distance, the ones that use the Defined Autoworks another, and then there are the custom fab guys too. It's all over the place.

My guess is that my car which uses the Pettit subframe is very close to the stock 13B location but I will measure to find out. Since the car is at Steve Osley's shop, I can easily compare it to the 13B stock location.

DMoneyRX-7 02-06-13 11:06 PM

any updates?

David Hayes 02-09-13 09:02 AM

Damnit! I forgot to measure the distance from the firewall to the LIM :( Getting old.

RTS3GEN 02-17-13 10:03 PM

Nice piece, very interested in this!!! Any updates?

muibubbles 02-17-13 11:01 PM

Minor updates, the mold is made and I'll be working on it this week sanding it down and polishing it up. No real ETA but it will DEFINITELY be done for DGRR for an "unveil" if it is not already released

Once I get a line up of products available I will set up a group buy in the 3rd gen section!

Hossler 02-25-13 12:26 AM

very intrested in it

felix_is_alive 02-25-13 07:14 AM

My 3rotor intake sits further out than the 13b so it should work (i have the pettit frame) ,also interested in this ,should look awesome

Thanks for the info felix! By "intake" youre referring to the UIM correct?

Can you measure the distance of the LIM to the firewall? That is what Benny needs. I'd do but my car has moved to another shop. Rotary roulette :) I've got the Pettit/RX Specialties subframe also so it will be the same.

felix_is_alive 02-25-13 09:16 PM

I guess i can ,its just sitting in my storage now ,waiting a new gearbox (old one blew up) ,if i remember tomorrow i could throw a tape measure at it

moosejaw 02-27-13 07:46 AM

Looks good ben
count me in when GB happens

nightime 03-23-13 12:49 PM

wouldn't it crack when u tighten down your top hat bolts

Bubble Tech 03-24-13 11:28 AM

i dont see how that should be a problem, that area will be reinforced with more layers and since the mold is directly off the car it sits flush. although we could be wrong, but that will be figured out once we R&D it:icon_tup:

XLR8 03-24-13 10:23 PM

Great work Benny! Never seen a quality cover available for the masses.

Grinch 03-25-13 09:24 PM

It would probably crack when tightening down the strut bolts I believe. Maybe you could put small washers in the mold so you would be tightening down on those instead of the carbon.

ZumSpeedRX-7 04-10-13 07:36 PM

Hey Ben. Any updates on when you think this will be available?

Bubble Tech 04-10-13 07:43 PM

Hey, I'm actually getting ready to make a CF prototype within the next few days.. No updates as far as release yet since i want to test it out first. I will have the prototype on the car for DGRR and the earlier fiberglass version prototype with me if anyone wants to test fit it!

rlee429 04-11-13 05:19 PM

Have you thought of using neodymium magnets as holding it down? Versus fastening it down?

ZE Power MX6 04-11-13 05:26 PM

Looking good, can't wait to see the final CF version.

Rlee thats actually REALLY clever. now the only thing is the magnets are a considerably thicker then the cover. im gonna test out that idea!:icon_tup:

AUS-FD3S 04-16-13 06:12 AM

Fantastic, i want to be the first in OZ with this :) when do you think you will be ready yo produce more? any ideas on pricing...

Again great work!! also like the carbon floor mats in the other thread.

Bubble Tech 04-16-13 10:33 AM

Aus sounds good! The mold is ready, now were trouble shooting how to do the lay up. We made a test CF piece and due to the complexity of the shape the fibers are all misaligned and look like CRAP. so once we are done strategising the best way to lay it up it will be for sale!

There are a few factors that will effect pricing that arent 100% yet. ex we were originally going to make these 100% carbon fiber, but now we may just make them CF top with fiberglass backing to keep cost down.. Anyone have preferences? Cost is looking between $800-$1000

REDLNE 04-23-13 12:22 AM

+1 For Australia When They Are Available.

AzEKnightz 04-23-13 12:41 AM

Wow an expensive piece if between 800-1000. But CF are always expensive anyways...

Love the work btw!
